  1. @EricBarkerit sounds like you're convinced about the Nord Stage 3 - it's a question of "73 waterfall vs 88 hammer", is that correct?

If so - yeah the springs on the 73 are a bit tight, but I've learned to cope, certainly for jazz and blues. (I wouldn't try Chopin on it). The Syntaur swap has been recommended by others here as well.

And you're right - nothing does "all-in-one" quite as well as Nord, despite its many shortcomings.

    Cheers, Mike

  2. My normal position is that even if I hate listening to a song, I can enjoy playing it.

And then I had to play "Sorry". There's at least 5 different parts - the Mellotron chords at the start, the "oh" vocal sample, the trumpet hook, a soft pad (with sweep) and some marimba-ish stabs. And the song is, for the most part, just one four-bar loop, round and round and round - the form isn't really delineated by anything more than some of those 5 parts dropping in and out. So it's hard work AND boring at the same time.

So yeah, forgive me if I don't want Justin on my lawn.

    Cheers, Mike.

This. If you are wrong, and someone tells you you're wrong, then you've learned something. If you're right, and someone tells you you're wrong, then they have earned that prerogative by paying you.

AFAIK, the entire TX series isn´t bi-amped at all.

That was my guess also. But Rob posted that Alto advertise "the TX308 features a bi-amplified 2-way design". It could be an over-excited marketing department, of course.

If it can work the undocumented USB Host magic that the RD88 can, I'll give it a pass on that one.

My currently-active 'favorite' pianist is Bill Payne. I've had the pleasure of hearing him live - with Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor.

When did he tour with Raitt? Payne is such a natural fit for Bonnie's band.

I saw her about 15 years ago - the keyboard chair was filled (superbly) by Jon Cleary.

    Options. You could:

    1) just deal with it the way it is.

    2) rewire the headphone jack so it doesn't cut off speakers. (may have impedance gotchas)

    3) use a cheap headphone Y splitter and send one output to line, and the other to either a pair of phones, or some tiny speakers you can sit on your keyboard.  (may have interactive impedance gotchas)

    +1

Option 2 might not be that bad. There will be normalling contacts in the headphone socket that connect the audio signal to the internal amp/speakers. Those contacts are broken by inserting a plug in the socket. It should be possible to short those so the connection to the internal amp/speakers is always made.

    Cheers Mike.

I suspect if you hear them do it live you'd have your answer :)  And that's what gets me. If they could come up with a way to do it in concert, why not on the album?

    I have, and I have!

I suspect that a fade was simply the default of the time. When it comes to doing it live, they add a little guitar solo over a sus chord to set up a perfect cadence - something which doesn't occur anywhere else in the song. It's not particularly great, memorable or in keeping - it's simply adequate at providing a way of ending the song.

I never liked the fade out...

Sometimes there's no other option. How can you convincingly end "What a fool believes?" (We've had a thread about this in the past).

In the spirit of a recently finished season: how do you end "All I Want for Christmas" without a fade?

The most stress free musical environments Ive been in are the ones where there is an understanding that one person is the de facto leader

This bears repeating. I had a little motivational chat with our BL recently to explain: sometimes you need to be a dictator. Otherwise nothing gets decided.

  11. I've rarely won battles like this. If anything, I find it's worth jumping on any mistakes at the first opportunity, so that it doesn't get ingrained.

But it does drive me crazy when e.g. somebody plays a natural 9 instead of a #9, or misses the diminished chord, or doesn't play the right rhythm. (Case in point: Bat out of Hell opens with (spoiler alert) it's not two crotchets/quarter notes. We tried it at rehearsal and of course I stopped the playthrough immediately. Cue stares and comments of "can't we just go with it as it is?")

The lesson I've learned is never to be "that guy". Come prepared, know your stuff - and be ready to be corrected.

  12. Many stands can nest one behind the other. You say you need

    but even a (double-braced) X-stand behind a Z, T or H could work to support your Kronos.

Do you have any unused stands that you could press into service. I'm a consistent fan of spending the minimum required to do the job.

    OMG, another stand thread.

What I need is something that is very sturdy and is adjustable for the top keyboard.  I have a MOXF8 on the lower position and a heavier Kronos 88 on the upper tier.  I also want something that leaves plenty of room width wise for sustain and other pedals on the floor.  I had an ultimate stand and didn't like it.  Then I decided to order the K&M 18950 with upper tier attachment and it is on backorder for another 2 or 3 months.  So I want to cancel that order and get something I don't have to wait for.  Any suggestions?

Kronos 88 on top might benefit from its own stand. Could two one-tier stands work for you?

    Cheers, Mike.

Definitely also a contender.  I think we had a sub or two who didn't know it or it would wrestle for top spot.   I have fun with that one though.

Here's the crib sheet for LTR:

"You don't know it? Funky blues in Gm, it goes VI-V instead of V-IV and watch me for the stabs and the ending".

I just looked and 24GB RAM is an option on all of them it's $400 option.

You're right: "configurable to" as opposed to a standard option. Missed it first time.

Still, $400?! I spent $56 (~$56+tax) to upgrade my windows desktop from 16 to 32GB!

(BTW I read an article about how something was $500 US and £400 UK. The author of the article wrote "I was jealous that it was cheaper in the UK". Erm, every heard of exchange rates? Funny, and makes you despair for humanity, all at the same time)

the other use case I can see for this is a lower-midlevel touring artist where Playing the Piano is a big part of the performer's identity and showmanship, but using a full-size grand is out of the question.

...or you can just do what a lot of other acts do and have a shell made, I guess!

Shell is a way to go, definitely. (See also: EscapeRocks).

I wonder if Roland have constructed the thing so it's a standard slab piano inside a shell, and the two can dismantle for easier relocation?

    Cheers, Mike.
