  1. This isn't an ethical thing, it's about doing what is in the financial interest of each entity. They aren't going to care that somebody did it for cheaper and you kept some cash in your pocket. It's strictly a numbers game for them. In order to look out for your own financial interest, consider the resale value of the car with vs without the "salvage" listing on the title. If it is worth more than $2000 more without the salvage listing, then it would potentially be in your best interest to forego the $2000 and also avoid the salvage indication. Of course this also depends on how long you intend to keep it, as that difference will shrink over time.
  2. The education element is interesting and I also would like to thank you El Lobo for sharing this information. My Ex Wife is in education as are many of my friends and there are a lot of competing interests trying to figure out what to do this fall. The options range from continuing to stay home and do zoom classes, to reduced class sizes by splitting classes and doing every other day with distancing and disinfection guidelines (my son's middle school proposing this), to full on resumption of classes. Evidence suggests there probably isn't much danger to the younger kids, but the teachers are exposed potentially to high and consistent viral loading. My ex said that if they have symptoms they are forced to stay home for 2 weeks (even with no testing) and would have to take personal time for those 2 weeks. If they don't have 2 weeks of personal time banked, then they don't get paid and aren't allowed to work, even though they aren't given a test. So I can see the standpoint of the teachers and the teachers union. The other side is the parents who have to work and either would have to hire sitters or stay home from work if their kids aren't in school. Kids forced to stay home often means parents forced to stay home, which has an impact on families that can be very serious. All that said, per El Lobo's post, based on age, it seems maybe kids of an age that are getting more likely to be infected and spread are also old enough to stay home alone while their parents work. So maybe elementary and middle school go back with some provisions for safety for the teachers while high school continues online and zoom. Just a thought.
  3. Everything we do in life involves some level of risk mitigation....not elimination, because that's impossible. We choose to take a shower when you could slip in the tub. We choose to step outside even though you could get struck by lightning, shot, or all kinds of other things. We choose to drive even though car accidents are a common cause of death. We eat tasty bacon despite its risk to our health. Risk MITIGATION. When you drive you make choices - maybe you pick a car with a good rating in crash tests, air bags, you drive safely. I'm paying attention to this right now - I signed up for a discount at Progressive where you install an app on your phone and it tracks your driving. Your rate can go up or down depending on the results. It gives you tips about safe driving and how to improve your score. One of them was not driving late at night, especially on weekends....not because of your driving, but because you're more likely to encounter drunk drivers. I didn't have to install the app and don't have to follow the guidelines. On the other hand, I could choose not to drive at all if I want to try to avoid all risk. Government Role? They have safety inspections, post speed limits, have traffic laws, and require wearing seatbelts. Reasonable, I think. They aren't imposing curfews or anything like that. We all have choices to make in terms of our risk mitigation when dealing with this, and nobody should be shamed for their decisions, whatever they are. There is SOME role of government to issue loose guideline, IMO tighter on the local level based on the conditions on the ground, so to speak. I think we can go back to work (well, if I can find a replacement for the job I lost because of this) safely by just practicing common sense. Most of the folks on hear seem to have that common sense, and most of the people I've encountered publicly as of late are also showing common sense and mutual respect. But that's here - it seems some of you are seeing something different in your corners of the world.
  4. Well I pulled the trigger. Haven't fired it up yet, just unboxed it. One thing it doesn't have any available internal drive bays to add an extra drive. The 512MB SSD should have plenty of space for anything I need to do in the immediate future, but I think I'm going to get a $25 external 3.5" drive enclosure and stick one of my 1 TB SATA spinning drives in that. It's USB 3.0 so that slows transfer rates to 5 gb/s, but good news is that it has its own power supply, so I don't have to worry about the computer's PS being to wimpy to add a drive. Probably wouldn't use it for any active projects but that would be just fine for file storage and backup. I think I'll pull the drive out of my old AMD Athlon XP box that I haven't used in ages because the boot drive crashed. I'll copy everything on my current computer onto it as well and I'll have all my files dating back a very long time. Wish I could have recovered Adobe CS3 off that old machine. As far as DaVinci, I think there's a free version I can try to see if it works OK and if not I can just uninstall. Not sure if I can transfer Magix or not, but at this point I don't really need it for anything.
  5. According to the specs, it's Quad-Core CLONK
  6. Listen to them. I have a few crates of records and an old Technics turntable I found at a pawn shop with a decent cartridge, playing through a Rolls phono preamp into my stereo. It's a different experience spinning the vinyl. I particularly enjoy indulging when my kids are around so they can get exposed to it.
  7. If notes are sustaining while you play more notes, those count. If you layer sounds like a piano with strings, thats multiple notes of polyphony per key. Sustain those notes as you play more and they stack up in a hurry.
  8. All I can say is that my cat and I have been snuggling closely for months and neither of us have caught the virus. She is elderly and has pre-existing conditions, including an unsightly cist on her back.
  9. To my point though, you can take it down to mono. Spread goes from mono to extreme stereo and everything in between as well as close vs distant. Where you you want the mic(s)? That said, the V/C kind of sucks and the Leslie sim sucks even more. Add a Vent and it makes a huge impact, of course, but then you remove your stereo/mono mic placement. Catch 22
  10. Cheapest refurb i7 I could find with 16 gig RAM is THIS one for $399.99. Besides the fact that it would be a much more serious hit for me right now, I would need some convincing that going from i5 to an i7 based on my current needs is worth an extra $120. In terms of MS Office - I PAID for it, I'm using that MF-er!!! Like I said, I figured out how to transfer it to a new computer, so I'm good there.
  11. I have a ton of drives/drive space but have not investigated what this case will accommodate. My current computer has a 1 TB spinning drive and I have an older computer whose primary drive crashed that has another 1 TB drive that still works and has files. - I don't think I need more than one of the 1 TB drives given the files I have and that the computer has a 512 GB SSD. So if I could consolidate files between the (2) 1 TB drives into just one of them and mount it in the new PC, that would be perfect. Yes I'm in the process of selling some musical stuff as soon as I finish some minor repairs, cleanup, and refurb, including my Jupiter 6, Opus 3, Korg CX3 (digital), Triton Pro, and a Fusion 6 HD....local buyers already for a couple of them.
  12. Maybe this is slightly OT but I mentioned a relationship ending do to this. I'm talking a romantic relationship. I had no idea that an innocent text could be interpreted the way it was on a Friday night. My son was in the Pinewood Derby State competition during the day Saturday while she worked and we were supposed to go out Saturday night. I had limited cell access and was involved in the event with my son. I tried to reply to her messages and figure out what she was upset about. By the time I was done with the pinewood derby stuff and she was off work, she moved solidly into passive aggressive mode and I was very confused. At the end of the day, she wanted me to apologize for saying something I didn't say, but she interpreted. So there's the conundrum. If you apologize, you admit you said what they think, even though you didn't. If you DON'T apologize they aren't satisfied. We went round and round as I tried to explain, until I finally just broke up with her. I can't stand that kind of BS and games, but it all started by my own poor communication via text.
  13. I posted earlier about losing my laptop when I lost my job, and limping along on an old home computer - a Core 2 duo with only 2 Gb RAM. Barely usable but at least it has Microsoft Office 2016 which I need for working on Resume and other things. My initial thought was to max the anemic RAM until I found out that 8Gig of DDR2 Ram for my computer would run $150-$200 which just seems like throwing good money after bad. I don't want to waste limited money on a computer while unemployed. I have maybe a couple more months before I run out of money completely if I don't land a new job, so I need to make it stretch. That said, I found a refurbished PC at MicroCenter in stock here near my house. Dell OptiPlex 3020 SFF Desktop Computer (Refurbished) Intel Core i5 4570 3.2GHz Processor; 16GB DDR3-1600 RAM; 512GB SSD; Intel HD Graphics 4600 for $279.99, 90 day warranty. CLONK for listing including all specs and other details. I already verified that I can log into my Microsoft account and disable Office 2016 on the old computer and install it on the new computer. Other than that is my DAW for which I have the disks to install. I have not looked into transferring the license for my Magix Video editing software yet, but had considered maybe just moving to Da Vinci Resolve. Seems like this computer barely meet the requirements - seeing conflicting info. That said, I RARELY do video and don't have huge requirements...I could port over the Magix movie maker software (if it worked - barely - on the old computer, surely it would work on the new). Video is at about the end of my priority list right now, but I would be interested if those who have experience with Da Vinci would have any feedback to offer. If there's another Refub PC available that's maybe an i7 instead of i5 for not much more and it would make a significant difference, then maybe an extra $50 means I could get better software and not have to upgrade for a much longer time. For my immediate needs, this computer will more than cover my needs based on what I'm using currently, but there is the question if - even given my somewhat dire situation - if it would make sense to bump any of the specs (I'm thinking primarily i5 processor up to at least i7) in terms of bang for the buck and usability.
  14. Korg CX3 engine isn't generally considered to be among the best, but at least you can adjust mic distance and stereo spread.
  15. I wouldn't read too much into a text message. I've had relationships end from misinterpretation of a text message. If it bothered you, call him.
  16. I suppose "decent keybed" is subjective, and you didn't mention what sounds you need, but there are lots of stage pianos with a decent collection of sound and decent keybed (IMO) for well under $3k. They aren't red. Kong SV-2 is $1,999, Grandstage is $2,199, Roland RD88 is $1,199, RD2000 is $25,99, Kurzweil SP-1 is $599, SP-6 is $1,299, Forte SE is $1699, Yamaha CP-88 is $2,499, Lots of Privies for good prices.
  17. Right, if it's such an easy fix, why doesn't the seller just go ahead ad do it so that they don't have to list it as a problem?
  18. I was trying to avoid stereotypes, but since you guys went there, you're assuming it's the crazy right wing who isn't wearing masks and social distancing. MO is a conservative state with lots of conservatives in the suburbs around the city of St. Louis and it appears I'm seeing a lot more masks and social distancing than you are seeing in CA, so maybe it's not so much a liberal vs conservative thing, but a MO vs CA thing. Food for thought.
  19. A winner for 'l BS ' advertising. Its ludicrous for someone to buy a $2000 keyboard. let it sit around boxed up, for 6 months, then decide to sell it. Depends on where it came from. Sometimes, music stores can get stuck with excess stock that can't be returned especially if the product has been replaced by a newer model, and they'll blow them out really cheap. People take advantage of the blowout sale hoping to be able to turn it around for a profit once they are no longer available.
  20. "gung ho" was probably the wrong term to use. Didn't mean to imply people like it. I meant more aggressive about the shut down including being one of the first states to shut down and going as far as shutting off utilities to businesses, and things of that nature, also being very vocal against other states opening prematurely, though I understand the views of a politician being interviewed does not necessarily represent the views of the whole state.
  21. Strange, I haven't heard a SINGLE case of somebody getting shamed for WEARING a mask. LOTS of cased of people getting shamed for NOT wearing one, including getting chased out of places by other patrons. One local radio show host said he was in his car by himself, and a woman pulled up next to him, honked and shook her finger at him pointing to her mask. He said he had a mask with him for when he got out, just no reason to wear it alone in the car. Funny and CA would seem to be one of those places that is gung ho about staying shut down and social distancing (if you watch the news - maybe that's unfair in REAL life). Yet, here, the gigs so far have mainly been outdoor and the few venues that have opened have taken out lots of tables and drastically limited how many people can be inside. A lot of venues are doing parking lot gigs where you can park every other space and sit in the spots between the cars and the band plays on the patio. A drive-in movie theater is doing concerts and a movie. Almost everyone is wearing masks everywhere I go.
  22. Interesting theory except that if that were the case, you would expect hot weather states to also have spikes in cold and flu during the summer. I'm not aware of that being the case.
  23. Characterizing it as wanting a haircut doesn't help. How about wanting to make a living so you don't lose your home and so that you can buy food? As businesses reopen, even where it's not required, I'm seeing most people wearing masks and using common sense social distancing. Even just walking around the neighborhood, folks will walk out into the street off the sidewalk to provide distance when we pass.
