  1. I have a buddy that has 3 or more Takamine 12's. The newer ones have tuners on board and battery compartments. The older one is his favorite and I talked him into having a battery box installed on the rear near the strap holder (the luthiers picked the location). It worked out great for battery access and didn't hurt the sound at all. It was a cool way to keep the active pickup.
  2. +1 on the trick design 3 barrels with intonation adjustments and +1 on the slanted cut pickup selector switch plate (both are very cool). I might add locking tuners. They also have the ashtray bridge plate with the lower edge cutout which I like (as I would always wind up picking on it instead of the E string LOL!). I know you love the SPC and you have to work it in somehow...This is going to be the project all of us will be glued to! :thu:
  3. Very cool Caevan! Keep us posted as the project progresses! Sounds like a load of fun. Have you considered Birdseye maple for the neck? I've heard it is a good one for strong materials which might save on future seasonal adjustments? I like the reverse headstock concept. I would also consider a reverse switch plate. Are you going with 3 barrel saddles or Strat style? Anyway, good luck and I know you will put your heart into it! I can't wait for the pics! :thu:
  4. Kuru, I've never owned an Ebow and I have never tried to use one so I can't really comment. Except to say, that I don't think I would be very good at it LOL! I like Caevan's comments and DBM's tag line on every post (except this one so far LOL!): "if it sounds good, it is good". I like Scott's comment about his electronic guitar music, that doesn't sound remotely like a guitar LOL! I like your comment about BB King (I can name that artist in just one note- paraphrasing). For the most part, I don't need a guitar that sounds like something else while others find the beauty in pedals that make you sound like you're playing a banjo or an organ, etc. That would include ebows, sustainers, distortions, OD's, synths, etc. I'm not a purist like many acoustic only players with the only electronics they will use is a PA and a mic. I'm more of an electric player that plays electric guitars like I play my acoustics and about all I need is a little reverb. I do enjoy my acoustics as well. It's all fun and I appreciate comments and our discussions, whether we agree or not. I agree that that's what forums are for... :thu:
  5. Thanks Scott and Kuru, very helpful info. I listened to Wichita Lineman and could hear what each of you were talking about and the Baritone sounding lead was very cool. I remember the Ventures using a 6 string bass back in the day on a couple of tunes. I didn't remember the whammy bar though. I mentioned the 6 string bass to my son-n-law when looking at his Baritone. The one Skip has in his photo has a much longer neck. I do like blending humbuckers in the middle position of the 3way so I can understand Scott's settings. Thanks again! :thu:
  6. I was just shown a Baritone guitar today that my son-n-law just picked up. We didn't plug it in so maybe on the next visit I will know more. Since we're on the subject of Baritone guitars (for which I'm Baritone challenged), I thought I'd ask you guys the same dumb questions I asked him today. Why do they need to put a bridge pickup on a Baritone guitar? Wouldn't that ad more treble when you are searching for more of a bass sound? I could see blending the two pups for at least one reason for the 2nd pickup. I guess in order to have a little more treble and/or bass, the bridge pickup comes in handy? Would you use the bridge pick up alone or is the sound better when blending it with the neck pickup? Hopefully you guys can bust through the fog! Thanks! :idk:
  7. Do you know how to catch an elephant? You dig a hole and build a wood fire in it. Throw in a can of peas. When the elephant comes to take pee, you kick him in the ash hole! (Now that was funny when we were in the 1st grade LOL!)...

HAPPY EASTER TO ALL OUR FORUMITES! :thu:

  8. Kuru, I haven't had any trouble selling a Boss pedal when I get tired of using one (i.e., like my Chorus and my Distortion pedals). I have taken gear to swap meets and the Boss pedals are always the 1st to disappear LOL! The last pedal I bought is a Boss Compressor CP-1x and I use it mostly for a clean boost. I pretty much go straight in these days, but it's nice to only carry one pedal to a gig if I feel I need an on/off volume boost...great stuff and I've seen some very road worn Boss pedals like the one you got for $12 bucks. +1 They work like they did when they were bought years ago!
  9. +1,000 Kuru! I'm a big fan of Roland and Boss stuff. They take a licking and keep on ticking. Very dependable equipment IMHO. My last gig was at an outdoor wedding and I used my Roland EX50 for our little PA with two mics. My buddy and I brought our two Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amps for our guitars and our drummer brought a sized down drum kit (not as sized down as the Stray Cat rig LOL!). My harmonica buddy brought his little Blues Jr. Fender amp for his instrument and plugged his vocal mic into my Rolland. We were only doing a little 15 minute set and each of us brought our rigs in our trunks. The little Roland did a great job running on the 50watt setting...
  10. DBM, One of these days you'll get the chance to try one. Bring your favorite mic and guitar and a couple of cords. And your Mp3 backing tracks and ask for a practice room. It will take 1/8" stereo or L and R 1/4" inputs with volume controls. They work great even in a small room like my bedroom. It may not be the best amp you will hear, but it will be a good one. I run mine only on the clean setting and can put any pedals I want in front to get the OD or other sounds I'm looking for. For the most part, I just go straight in. Let use know whether you like it or not if you ever get by a GC or music store that carries them. :thu:
  11. My favorite little amp is my Roland EX4 Street Cube (aka Roland EX50). It weighs about 16lbs. Has two 8" speakers with two tweeters on the mic/acoustic channel. Works on 8 AA batteries or plugs into AC. Runs 10 25 or 50 SS watts. Works great as a PA on a stand in one channel and with my guitar in the other. I can also bring my Fender Tone Master Deluxe when I'm a little more serious for the guitar and leave the other channel open for my Harmonica player/singer's mic (both channels have a mic/guitar 1/4 " jack). It also has a 3rd channel for keys, MP3, loopers, etc. Runs stereo or mono. Great for busking or BBQ deck parties, camping, or inside gigs. Easy in and out and takes up little space in the trunk or back seat. Sounds great with acoustic or electric guitars. This amp has been the most used amp in my arsenal. I've used it just about everyday for about a decade and it's always worked perfectly. Not cheap, runs about $500 bucks...but well worth it IMHO.

You might use a small AC strip with your amp Kuru since the on/off switch has been broken off. It makes it easy to turn the amp on and off without having to unplug it every time. You can also run other things with the amp if you wish...

  12. Skip, I prefer bone nuts and saddles on acoustic guitars and bone nuts on electrics. I'm not sure whether or not they change the tone all that much. I have one Strat with a metal roller nut and it sounds very nice. I like bone nut as it's the strongest material between plastic, tusq and bone. I had a cheap plastic nut crack on me on the 6th string slot on a cheaper MIM Tele. I had it replaced with a tusq nut (which is a much harder plastic material). The tech showed me how easily the cheaper plastic nuts break and there is not that big of an expense in upgrading a little bit. If it ain't broke, don't fix it is my motto, but your ear is probably much better than mine. I have had the bridge saddles sanded on a couple of my acoustics to lower the action. In that case, I would have replaced the saddles with bone, but they already had bone LOL!
  13. Having to cut down a tree to see if you can use it is why Bob Taylor started using all the light colored ebony in the tree as opposed to just the pure black Ebony for his fret boards. I knew they would touch on this subject in the article when discussing saving as many Ash trees as possible. Using the stored Ash for their period correct guitars. Ash is also a pretty wood for sunburst Fenders. The painted models which is most of what, Fender already uses Alder for. This saves on cutting down Ash trees and you're not going to see the wood through the many coats Hot Rod painted colors. Sorry to see the change as lots players prefer sunburst Ash models and natural wood models. But, if it's good for the environment (especially in the South Swamp Ash zone). I'm all for it! I like Leo's attitude "99% functional and 1% pretty is what's important" (paraphrasing)...Cool guitar Skip!
  14. Thanks for the info SurferGirl, it sounds like your state compares very well with our California stats. My wife and I (70 & 71) have both had our 2 shots and they are lowering the age for appointments for the last couple of weeks as well. So far the vaccines have had a very positive affect on our Covid 19 numbers and our businesses are now opening up more in most of our California counties. Glad to hear your mom and grandparents are getting their shots! :thu:
  15. SurferGirl, Wishing you the best of luck with your sister's housing situation. It has me wondering how the vaccination programs are working on the islands? It would seem that smaller island populations would be vaccinated 100% quickly. Is there some kind of hold on getting vaccines to the locals in Hawaii? :idk:
  16. Glad you found your baby Danny and got it at a great price! I liked the sound of the belly contoured back side like a Strat. The newer Teles started using the same concept. Very nice looking axe. The only thing I wonder about is why the 1st and 2nd string saddles are so far forward for intonation settings? (It looks like the 1st string is as far as it can go). Hope you find a case for it. +1 the Strat/Tele cases might do the job. Anyway, belated congrats! :thu:
