  1. Maybe you could commission someone to transcribe for you? I know there"s some published transcribers active on this forum. Here"s a gentleman that specializes in rock, pop, blues and country keyboard transcriptions: https://www.manymidi.com/elmo_peeler.htm
  2. I"ve heard too that even Sinatra used some sort of chest notes. If he did, why can"t i? I"m not a great singer by any means, and really just sing out of necessity... I drill and kill sections one at a time. I loop the sections on my iPhone using the Yamaha Chord Tracker app. ( which also allows you to transpose and tempo) First , I sing along with the original, section by section, just by ear. Listening all the vocal inflections ,breathing and other details. I"ll alternate singing along with the recording, and then acapela. Also I will sing along with a drum pattern from the Drum Genius app. As I sing, to the drum loop, I hear the bass and other instruments in my mind. I love to this when walking. I kinda move and groove and sorta march in time as I"m singing. I must look like a freak but it"s very helpful and great musical and physical exercise! I just got home from a 45 minute walk morning doing this with the Santana song ' Smooth' and got to tell I feel so good now! Yes, I"ll probably have my iPad on my stand with the lyrics displayed when sing for the first in public tonight, but I don"t think I"ll have to have my eyes glued to the screen. Another thing, if you mess a lyric, get a verse out of order, just keep the flow going, scat sing the melody if you have ( like someone mentioned Jerry Garcia of the Greatful Dead would do) We are humans, nobody"s perfect, right?
  3. I would bit that even the keyboardist on this cut would not be able reproduce this intro note for note so why should you? Just learn the chords and throw in your favorite blues licks and have fun with it. Nobody will know the difference with this kind of music. Now on the other hand it"s a great exercise to transcribe improvisations note for note. I do it all the time, but just for personal growth, not so much for performance purposes. Either way, good luck. If you happen to find a transcription please share it!
  4. Of course you can always transpose (lower) the keys of the original songs. Learn some generic 2 hand comping patterns that you can apply to all sorts of songs. Also be able to play the melody in the RH while your LH plays a simple accompaniment.
  5. How could we really measure who is better? Give them a scale exam? Maybe give them two days each to learn a solo piano piece of music that is unfamiliar to them both ? How about put them in playing situations outside of their comfort zones ? Perhaps a jazz trio, a salsa band, a fusion band? My guess is Billy Joel would fair better in such a challenge but I actually enjoy Eltons music much more. Both are great at what they do in their own right and I dont listen to them as just pianists but rather as unique musical artists.
  6. For instance, as we all know, Elton's music owes much to gospel chord progressions. In the movie, we see Elton as a kid learning classical pieces, then we see him later as keys player for a black soul band, but there is no attempt to show us how his musical thought process evolved. Yes I thought the same thing too. According to movie Elton had crazy good ears and could reproduce anything he heard even before he had lessons. His dad had a good collection of jazz albums and mom would buy him rock n roll albums. I can only assume he developed his style by listening to albums and copying. Good classical chops, raw talent, and a great ear can get you pretty far.
  7. I found the movie enjoyable but if youre expecting carbon copy musical/ vocal renditions of Eltons music and you if dont care for surrealistic musicals you will probably be disappointed.
  8. Fixed.... into a little friendly relationship advice for ya. [/ Your point is well taken. Moonglow mentioned that he was married, and I thought he should take his wifes feelings into consideration. Secrecy is not a good thing in a relationship.
  9. A gig is a gig. How do you think she would feel if it was a gay bar? [/ Youre right, a gig is a gig..., Honestly after working awhile at the strip club gig the thrill kind of wears off.... it just a gig... As far as the gay bars, Ive done gigs at those too. My wife didnt care because Im not attracted to men.
  10. May I ask how Mrs. Moonglow feels about this gig? Has it been discussed? I had a gig at a mens club ( I guess thats a nice way to say strip club) I never brought up the details of the gig with my wife, and somehow she found out months later, and she didnt take it too well. Maybe if I told before hand she wouldve been O K with it? I doubt it! Anyways, it was a good gig and no complaints from me about the dancers
  11. I have two YouTube channels. One is for my Latin project , search elgrupocache dallas I just have a couple dozen subscribers and not many views... But YT, has served as a good platform to upload videos for perspective clients. My other channel ispaulblood music Right now its mostly videos of solo gigs. I would actually like to start making videos for jazz nerds like myself. My favorite ii V I licks, applications of horn solo transcriptions to the piano, montuno patterns , and other stuff like that. The only thing is my video and editing skills are so rudimentary! Im not sure if I really want to spend 8+ hours editing a video when I could spend that time practicing....
  12. This. I think it's not only wasted, but counter-productive and unhealthy for the mind and body. There's only one way and it's forward! What really matters is what you're doing NOW to improve what you want to improve. +1
  13. Also let me add ear training. I wish also I had really dedicated much more time to it. I am a believer ( for the most part) that its never too late, so I do make it a point to do ear training every day now. My aural skills have gone from really bad to Ok With more work I think I can keep on developing my ear to a high level. Its a life long process I suppose.
  14. I should have done everything to develop my voice. There were so many opportunities like church and school choirs, and school/community musicals. When I young I simply did not have the inclination nor did realize how important it is for a musician to sing. I started singing as an adult and I can get by.... but Im sure Id be a much better singer if I had started really singing early in life.
  15. Music is my life, just about everything else can feel like an intrusion. That's not healthy and has caused issues in relationships. I'm a bit fanatical when comes to practicing, and I get a bit anxious when I can't practice. My wife and I are going on vacation to Europe for 6 weeks, and I'm considering not bringing a keyboard! Yes, even on vacations I always bring a keyboard. I'll probably bring my harmonica though, and I have my ipad loaded with ear training and other music apps. But if I had to pick my"1B" passion it would be Spanish. I learned it later in life, and I'm now fluent. I learned Spanish because I fell in love with Latin music (and women) . My drum teacher who taught so much about Latin music started sending me out to Latin club gigs to sub for him. That's what inspired me to learn the language. Now, I'm trying to learn French, and I'm pretty disciplined about spending at least 20 minutes everyday (mostly on Duo Lingo) I enjoy the language learning process, and have several other languages that I'd like to dabble in.
  16. Joe, Id be interested in hearing your thoughts and other musicians thoughts on this film. I tend to like musician bio pics.:I cant wait to see the Elton John movie Rocket Man ! Thanks Joe for the article. Interesting read.
  17. Im a big jazz fan and also am very interested in the history of this unique American art form, so I had to see this movie about jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden. The music, done by Wynton Marsalis was simply amazing, the movie and story itself is quite dark in a disturbing sense. If your a jazz fan like me, you should see this movie, but dont bring the kids!
  18. I have a professional service come every 3 months. It's totally worth it! They will even dispose of any dead rodents between services. Having to pick up dead rats just creeps me out!
  19. So true. Im sure must of us could learn a thing or two from a child like Joey Alexander!
  20. Not sure if theres any arranger keyboards fans here? Maybe haters LOL... Anyways heres my easy listening / Latin rendition of The Way You Look Tonight featuring my brother in law Manuel Casteñeda on Sax, and yours truly on vocals and the Ketron Audya keyboard, LH triggering the auto accompaniment and Strings pad, RH piano and guitar sounds. Thanks for listening [video:youtube]
  21. Thank you Eric and Jim. We appreciate you taking the time to listen!
  22. Hello Everybody, November 1st and 2nd are known as "Dia de los muertos" or "All Souls Day" It's a special time to remember those loved ones that have departed. Here's our rendition of the "La Llorona" (The Weeping Lady) a song based on the spooky Mexican legend. Everyone the band is "familia" My wife is singing, niece on background vocals, daughter on violin, newphews on guitar, timbales, an old amigo from college on the congas. My primo (cousin) did the audio recording and video too. I realize that cumbia is not everyone's cup of musical tea, but hopefully you can feel it!
  23. I'm trying to decide between the Peter Martin course and the Herbie Handcook master class. Lots of choices out there for sure.
  24. Anyone have any experience using the SS3 as a mini PA for a keyboard/vocal OMB ? I use a Yamaha psr 950 and TC Helicon vocal harmonizer. I play pretty small venues like house parties, pool parties, dances at senior centers, and restaurants. I get good results with two Bose compacts, but it would be nice to have an "all in one unit" Any thoughts?
