I don't want to be overly negative, but for my purposes, this is a big disappointment.

     - No individual split points.

     - No improved organ (biggest area of weakness, imo)

     - No increased piano memory

     - No USB Audio

     - No Improved Displays

Yeah, the organ is the biggest disappointment by far for me personally. C2D is discontinued which made me hope that some new tech is on the way that would find its way into the NS4, and especially after reading the marketing bs of "massive enhancements to our award-winning technologies, the Nord Stage 4 sets a new standard".  Don't know if they will release another clone and they think the organ is "good enough" for their target customer group...

Otoh if they release a new clone....it would be "funny" if that tech would get into a Electro 7 and then if we are "lucky" a NS4EX ?!?! Worst case 2029 🥴

IIRC the updated Leslie (close miked) got into NE5 long before the NS3 was released.

In best case the NS4 can be updated if a new organ comes.....just speculating here.

  2. ...and singer...

Never heard of the guy before he showed up in my FB feed...

Sings like Stevie and plays like Herbie...

They really are on fire here...like the cops are after them and it´s the last gig they'll ever play 🤠

With the monsters Hadrien Feraud on bass and Nicolas Viccaro on drums

Love how they morph into Stevie´s  "You Got It Bad Girl"

(I mean movie or tv show scores) I've noticed it a few times now, starting with Stranger Things on Netflix - that Jupiter-sounding, sequencer-driven bass line - the signature sound of Stranger Things.   A pleasant sound, and reminiscent of the 80's, I guess.

Google tells me the musicians are a synth duo called Survive, Michael Stein and Kyle Dixon.   My ears aren't tuned to synth timbres well enough to distinguish individual synths;  I thought "Jupiter 8", but I read that they used a Roland SH-2 for the bass line, and also Prophet-5 and ARP 2600 in other places (don't know how valid the source is).

I've noticed the same sound (i.e., the sequencer-driven Roland bass) on a couple of other Netflix shows - it's almost like that's a kind of signature sound they go for in certain 80's or 90's themed productions.

I wonder if they always use the Survive guys...

SH-2 is one of my favourite bass-machines. Punchy, fat low-end

    "Like this....unfortunately"

Why unfortunately? I know this guy says it doesn't sound as good, but on my studio monitors (Dynaudios) I can't tell the difference. Granted, this wasn't a great test. The switching between the two was cumbersome, so that didn't help. And a bass sound would be about the last thing I'd pick to demonstrate/compare a chorus (I'd go for a pad or a clean guitar); but I don't think anyone would be able to tell the difference in a mix (or even soloed)

Unrelated to the actual test, it always surprises me when someone records audio in a professional studio and the audio quality of the narration is awful.

It´s not about what this guy says...I can clearly hear that is sounds worse

In fact, you have to mod it to get it "closer" to the original as KT has got the LFO speeds wrong....to mention one thing

Believe me, I really wanted this to be good as the originals fetch really high prices these days

Also, right before I hit "Submit Reply," I just realized that was slightly OT. Yes, I expect a minor key to be written relative to the major, almost always, with the exception of a song that is unequivocally and immutably "in" that minor key--say "Ain't No Sunshine."

Hehe...didn´t see your post when I posted my reply....funny that you also chose Ain´t No Sunshine as the minor example :)

But occasionally the minor chord is so dominant that it works better to call it a 1 minor, just to make the chart simpler.  This is often true when a song is driven by a seemingly minor EG riff that actually has no third, but "sounds" clearly minor, not major.

The Sinatra tune analogholic asked about would be charted in the major key and then marked "modulate" or "Key Change" with the appropriate interval indicated.

So yes, minor key songs are mostly charted as the 6- of the relative major.  One reason is that lots of minor key songs have choruses that are major.  If you start the chart with 1-, the chart gets really ugly in the chorus.

Without knowing so much about Nashville numbers...this is kind of what I felt...when songs are clearly minor...like "Ain´t no Sunshine...then it would be a bit corny with the relative major...and as you say, a song like My Funny Valentine starts in minor and chorus is in major, then you would write the "1 minor" as 6m...yet again I was maybe hoping to use "one" system for all...so Autumn Leaves has (almost if you would think as "starting" autumn on the tonic minor instead of the 4m) the same chord progression in the A section as Fly Me To The Moon....but the first one is minor and the latter major...so (Im) IVm bVII7 IIIM7  etc becomes Vim IIm V7 IM7....etc which makes it a little confusing for me on these types of (same) progressions...

  7.

Trying to start with Nashville numbers and was curious how you use it in minor keys.

Do you still think in “major” and name the ”minor tonic” as 6 etc

Or do you name the minor tonic as 1?

And in that case do you name 3, 6 and 7 like that or b3, b6 and b7?

What about tunes like “The Way You Look Tonight” where the B section is in another key? Do you then think like “up a minor third”

Would be grateful hearing about how you use this method. Pros and cons of the different ”versions” for minor.

  8. Insanely difficult....but then gotta go with my early influences

    In no particular order:

    Joe Zawinul

    Herbie Hancock

    Keith Jarrett

    Chick Corea

Would suggest a couple of more Mt Rushmores so all the others like George Duke, Lyle Mays and Cory Henry to name only a few can have

    their own rightful place too.

  9. One of the absolutely greatest...

Was thinking a while ago since Chick and Herbie were near 80...how much longer will they be around....

Still can't believe this is true...

Heard Light As A Feather already as a kid as my dad played stuff like this all the time....so he is forever in my musical DNA

Chick Corea has returned to forever

Thank you for all the incredible music Maestro!

  10. I own an OBX

I heard demos of the VS-1

It's good but not quite an OBX. The OB6 is better. Or wait for the DSI OBX reissue.

The guy also builds OB-X voice cards and some people have them in their OB-X´s...to get an 8-voice out of a 4-voice...

AFAIK they can´t hear any difference...

I also like that he spent a lot of time to get the tuning "right"..on the VS-1..a new modern "tighter" tuning and a "vintage" one

THIS is where all modern analog polys "fail" IMO....the OB-6 is just too "sterile"

If Sequential will release an OB-X, they will probably screw it up just like the new "Prophet 5"....

  11. Very good topic indeed!

    Thank you!

I have used the Roli block a little...can´t say I mastered PLAYING on it...but fun to give that little extra for simpler playing.

Also been using Yamaha breath-controller via my Kurzweils controlling all kinds of stuff....

I would like to see some breath-controller with CV/gate for my analog synths....midi 1.0 seems not be good enough for this

Been eyeing the Touché-stuff myself...but just as you, wondering if it would be worth it....

  12. I cannot help but to think this is synth equivalent of buying a brand new TV and having the option to add "snow".

Yeah...this is more or less what it is...

The slop or detune on the OB-6 sounds so fake and wrong it´s not even funny....it doesn't mimic drifting oscillators but adds some weird unmusical "detuning"....

So I hope this new Vintage knob will do a little bit of a better job...

  13. I played the P6/OB6 at NAMM 2016 when they were released. One of the development engineers at the show was someone I knew for a long time. As a happy OBX owner who appreciated the value of its imperfections, I suggested something like the "vintage knob" to the engineer. Not just the VCOs but also the VCF cutoff and EG transients. This engineer had also worked for Oberheim back in those days. Happy to see it was included in the reissue P5/P10, and very happy they are now implementing it for the P6/OB6. DSI does listen to its customers.

As an owner of OB-X, OB-Xa and other vintage analogs, these super precise VCO´s of the OB-6 bothered me as I cannot recreate the behaviour of drifting oscillators that even my Nord Lead 1 has managed to simulate

I contacted DSI and asked if there was any chance doing something about this like turning this background tuning or whatever it is, off, (like on the Andromeda) to make the oscillators move...and the answer from one of the main engineers was that "people like this precise sound" and told me to look for another synth if I don't like the OB-6 ;)....Talk about missing the point completely especially when I described all the things I liked with it....

I just bowed out understanding I won't get anywhere with him....

So I'm pretty sure we didn't talk to the same engineer...

  14. So...

For everyone who complained (as myself) about the "dead stiff" VCO´s of the P6/OB6 which makes them sound like DCO´s...

Finally, DSI has listened and have implemented the Vintage Knob feature from the new Prophet 5/10 Rev 4 in the latest Firmware

1.64 which is still only in Beta and only be downloaded from the DSI forum.

Haven´t found a decent demo yet where the obvious test would be just a chord and turning the vintage knob up and down.

It´s not selectable per patch (yet)...you have to choose the current "detune" character or the new vintage knob character in global settings.

I will personally wait until it´s out of Beta as people reported wonkiness with pan spread etc after updating to the new firmware.

I have no illusion it will make the OB6 behave like an OB-X, but hopefully useful enough to put a little "fake liveliness" into the DCO´s....sorry "VCO´s"...

Oh, and the new firmware now supports MPE as well :)

    Main OS 1.6.4

    Feature: MPE support

Feature: Slop now supports normal slop or Vintage operation

    Here is one demo
