  1. They also reissued it as a small Boutique line module, the JD-08: https://www.roland.com/us/products/jd-08/
  2. Nostalgia is a nice feeling that we all experience from time to time. But outside of it every modern VA will make circles around a JP-8000 for the same or less money.
  3. Things like that used to always depress me a lot and make me feel like sh1t. I’ve long ago realized I was not gonna be a good jazzman and I’m now in peace with that realization 😀 And I’m happy when I see a kid that is as talented in a skill like jazz improvisation which is not just playing the piano but much more.
  4. How does Minimonsta compare to Diva? I know Diva is not specifically a Minimoog emulation but it has all of the modules, so you can basically have it. I made a very simple patch on my Behringer Model D that I was able to nail on Diva and not on the Arturia Mini V, nor on Moog’s own iOS app. So, Diva is really a spot on emulation and as far as I know it uses analog circuit emulation instead of generic DSP. I don’t see Minimonsta advertised as using circuit modeling, so I’m wondering if maybe Diva has an edge on all other Minimoog emulations?
  5. BTW, I may be wrong but I think Wayne Shorter used to play almost predominantly the soprano saxophone which is not typical for a hardcore jazz player. The soprano is more often associated with smooth jazz. He was really a master of extracting some unique essence from what is apparently not the first instrument choice of other sax players.
  6. R.I.P. 😢 I love the “1 + 1” album with Herbie Hancock.
  7. And kudos to @Noah DC for his clever solution to mute/unmute external software instruments from a single MIDI zone on the Numa. Absolutely brilliant and what made me want the Numa 👍🏻
  8. @HammondDavewell, OK, you talked me in, just ordered it 😀
  9. I just sold the CP88 because it was too heavy to carry and caused me some back pain, besides it was too long to fit in my car trunk. After a lot of consideration I think I'm going to order a Numa X Piano 73. Talk me out of it 😀 The other shortlisted candidates: - YC73, CP73, YC61 - I'm not sure I like the BHS action in the 73-s. And I owned a YC61 that I loved even for piano playing but 5-octaves are limiting. Besides, all these boards are kind of expensive for my needs, as I realized I just play 1-2 times a month for fun with friends, so the Numa at half the price is tempting. - Vox Continental - all looks great but haven't tested it and I’m kind of disappointing in lack of split octaves, USB audio, audio inputs. Also, the touch strips do not send continuous values. BTW, I briefly owned a Numa X Piano 88 and was rather underwhelmed by its touch response and the piano sounds but at the time I expected absolutely the best. Now, I'm just needing an occasional gig instrument. And I hope the newest firmware has improved the touch response.
  10. Marketing: how many Korg ARP Odyssey FS units did you sell for $1500 since 2017? Sales: 78 units so far. Marketing: that’s too bad. Please ask factory to stop assembling them and instead start selling them as kits for $1800! What could go wrong? 🧐
  11. On the condition you never touch the piano when you become a resident? 😀 JK
  12. It’s called envelope re-trigger. Or in this case the lack of it when playing legato. More specifically, it’s the filter envelope that opens the filter on attack and then decays to a soft sustain sound. When envelope re-triggering on legato is switched off, you would hear the new note without a filter attack, only playing at the current sustain level which might be low, hence a closed filter and a softer timbre.
  13. @AnotherScott yeah I was gonna say that too. If I get the Vox I will use the touch strips for controlling a synth: cutoff, resonance, modulation, etc and those need continuous values. If someone with a VC can hook it to a DAW and record a few slow finger slides to observe the values that are sent, I will be thankful 👍🏻 I’m wondering if those work smoothly/continuously when controlling the on-board synth engine? Even if they produce discrete and spaced values, the engine can be programmed to smooth it out so that it doesn’t sound abrupt. P.S. Some virtual synths, e.g. Diva, have modulation processors that can smooth out stepped values, it’s called “Lag” in Diva. I have used it for smoothing out my Nektar GXP aftertouch input that is slightly abrupt and it becomes very pleasant, almost similar to how my Hydrasynth works.
  14. I hope you mean 1-127 😀 If that’s the case, it seriously makes me want it. I found a buyer for my CP88 and and am on the lookout for a lighter weight board. As for the MIDI, there’s also the pitch bend that sends continuous data (besides pedals). And I believe some of the buttons send discrete values about their on/off state.
  15. Does anyone know if the 9 touch strips send continuous MIDI values 0-127 or there are just 8 different values? No mention in the MIDI manual and hardware-wise they look like 8 discrete touch sensors but who knows… Hopefully they are a continuous sensing strip and it’s only the LED-s that are 8.
  16. Yeah, I’ve been researching MC-101/707, MPC One/Live, Digitakt/Syntakt and the just announced Roland SH-4D. Still not sure if I will be able to cope with such a workflow and whether it’s better/easier than using a computer 🧐 P.S. Here’s an interesting quote from the description of the Apple Music Dark Wave Playlist: Dramatic, alluring, and dangerous, darkwave represents a shadowy alliance of styles snaking through underground rock from the ‘70s onward. Born from the doleful post-punk and goth sounds of Joy Division, Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, darkwave established itself as a brooding counterpoint to peppier strains of early-’80s New Wave. Its particulars varied greatly at first, with wiry punk minimalism balanced by opulent synths, but thanks to The Cure and Cocteau Twins, certain standards soon emerged: minor keys, cavernous reverb, and keyboards as plush as a coffin’s red velvet lining. Eighties darkwave channeled widespread Cold War dread, but the fall of the Wall didn’t dispel the gloom. A new generation of bands, like Black Tape for a Blue Girl, explored ethereal atmospheres and theatrical inclinations, while ’00s alt-rock crossovers like She Wants Revenge carried darkwave into the charts. It’s a style as enduring as angst itself.
  17. Yeah, probably targeted at modern types of music. Might have to research it in regards to my other thread about electronic, EDM, dark-wave 😀
  18. You will still need to attach a MIDI keyboard to this since I can’t imagine playing on these tiny buttons with no velocity sensitivity, especially chords. I imagine it great for electronic music though where you can program drum patterns through these buttons on the fly. Besides, it has 4 synth parts all reusing the same potentiometers and faders which may lead to a lot of frustration and sudden changes of values when you start tweaking them.
  19. I’m wondering how this compares to just using a laptop. Certainly there are more direct controls but then only a small low-res screen and various cryptic button combinations and menu diving.
  20. I feel for you. I consider myself still young at 44 but I already have a herniated disc and recurring sciatica problems due to it. I had serious back pain two weeks ago that lasted for two days after I moved my CP88 from my car to a rehearsal room and back. I am not hurting my back again with that CP88 and it's for sale... Health is more important.
  21. Thanks, both examples are excellent! I’ve never heard of Incirrina but I liked that song and will check them out for sure. It’s a bit old-school dark-wave but still within the domain I’m mostly interested in 👍🏻 Do they use the Akai to manipulate the rhythms in real-time or it’s preprogrammed and they just use it as a player? I’m wondering to what degree a laptop with Logic is better than an Akai or vice versa. I’m afraid the Akai is just a DAW in a box but might be wrong.
  22. Indeed, if you would need an external device for a Nord Stage, then you defeat the purpose of the Nord Stage and you'd be better of with a workstation.
  23. Not sure what help it is but yesterday I experimented with changing the split point of my Yamaha CP88 by sending SysEx messages from a Java program that I wrote. My idea is actually different: I need to automatically set proper MIDI zone ranges based on the actual global split point. Anyway, you can read/write every single setting on the CP88 through SysEx messages. If the Nord Stage specification allows for setting any note split point, not just those with LED-s, through e.g. SysEx, then this can be done, even by using a small DIY device that's hooked to the MIDI IN port and a bunch of buttons.
  24. Ohh, yeah!!! I must admit I haven't listened to them for years and should refresh myself but there were times that I would listen to them on repeat. Of course Prodigy as well, and The Propellerheads, Chemical Brothers, etc. but I guess all that is more big-beat, if I'm not mistaken. As for EDM, there's stuff there that I like nevertheless, like Insomnia by Faithless, or Children by Robert Miles. Huge fan of Drum'n'Bass too, which is also part of EDM but I'm not sure it's good for vocals.
