I see a lot of discussion lately about music documentaries. In the interest of limiting the amount of OT threads on here (because it's SO important), why don't we confine such discussion to one thread?

My recommendations:

Muscle Shoals
Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest
A Great Day in Harlem
The Eagles
Who Is Harry Nilsson?

Eager to hear everyone else's favorites!

Should we open the thread to musical comedies and dramas too?

Hell, The Blues Brothers almost is a documentary, considering the players/actors/guest stars. Not to mention that they used classic tunes.

I think the only way to see this is still at one of the screenings.

One of the few docs made about a band at its beginning.

And this. cool

What's up with no DVD of *Bayou Maharajah* (docu about James Booker released last year)?

Weird. I bet there's some footage in there I'd like to see.

+1 didn't see it yet but very much want to. Read Dr.John's bio, awesome btw, and he touched on quite a bit of Mr. Booker's life. Very sad. But explains how he could belt the blues like he could.

The Commitments was a Fantastic movie IMO.
I just recently very much enjoyed the new INXS movie that came out on tv.

Love some of the older music/comedy films like "A Song Is Born". Goodman, Dorsey, Armstrong, Hampton... and Danny Kaye. smile

Among modern movies with a jazz theme, I loved "'Round Midnight", non so much "Bird", too dark and negative.
I think "Ray" is a great movie too.

Word. That was an amazing autobio Dr. John did. Booker seemed to have been quite a character.

It wasn't so long ago that one of my main things on the internet was tracking down those hundred hours or so of live Booker tapes, and then YouTube came along with a bunch of video footage I'd never seen and it was like "damn."

Hey, you know what's a good documentary, is the one about Monk....called....I think it's called *Straight No Chaser." Tons of great footage.

I knew the big records and a little bit about his life and the same handful of his tunes everyone plays, but lately really digging deeper inside his music, it's amazing to see great footage, even if he did have kind of a sad life.

Also, another old chestnut, *The Universal Mind of Bill Evans* -- just him chatting with his brother and demonstrating things on the piano.

Oh yeah, speaking of piano footage, here's one I saw about a year ago, *Glenn Gould The Alchemist*. Fucking amazing footage of Gould performing, up close and personal, the Bach E minor Partita and a bunch of stuff.

I know there were the two big movies relatively recently about him, but this one's from the 1970s, I think, and isn't so much about his (kind of weird) life, but his playing.

Just watched the trailer for "Take Me To The River"...the upcoming doc about Memphis. Looks really good to me.

Then I would include That Thing You Do by Tom Hanks in his directorial debut.

As I mentioned in the other thread, Take Me to the River was beyond excellent. Sorry, it blew the doors off Muscle Shoals (not that this is a competition). As discussed in that thread, the Muscle Shoals movie had pacing and filler problems that took away from what could and should have been a great movie. OTOH, Take Me to the River was perfect.

I am really glad these music documentaries are getting done before we lose all the people involved. A few of the Memphis guys died before Take Me to the River was finished, but at least they got in the movie.

Also, I created both threads linked in this post, and intentionally didn't label them as OT because besides being music movies, they have plenty of keyboard content.

I lost interest in the Eagles when those 2 henchmen unfairly dismissed Don Felder.

There are two documentaries I've been waiting forever to see but they were either never released or still in production:

1) Love Story - About Arthur Lee and Love
2) Play That, Teo - About the one and only Teo Macero

Anybody have anything to offer about them? I've seen bits and pieces of both but nowhere about any of them being released or not.
Bruce

For something a bit different, last year I saw an interesting documentary about the alternative/electronic scene in Istanbul, and as it interacts with traditional Turkish music. It's called "Crossing the Bridge - the Sound of Istanbul".

"Sound City" was great, and it cemented Dave Grohl's current status as my "Favorite Person In Music."

"History of the Eagles" parts 1 and 2 was also entertaining, although you definitely come away with the feeling that Don Henley and Glenn Frey are world-class pricks.

I just watched "Searching for Sugar Man." Another great film with an incredible story. A must see for any fan of music!!

"Twenty Feet From Stardom" is next on my list....

"Shine", the academy award nominee from 1996 about David Helfgott, was one of the movies that inspired my love of piano. I highly recommend it.
