As long as I'm on that train of thought, how about Parasite by Kiss, Stranglehold by the Nuge, La Grange by ZZ, Fire Woman and Edie by the Cult.

Ooh, ooh... Into the Void by Sabbath. What a jam!

DC Ross... I so agree with your picks. Those are my favorite bands for so long. And as long as we have GnR on the table, what about everyone's fav Welcome to the Jungle.

One great rock guitar intro that comes to my mind is found on "Autograph", the opening track on the album "Colours" (Light Records, 1980) by Resurrection Band (a.k.a. "Rez"). Although Stu Heiss did most of the lead guitar work for Rez, Glenn Kaiser (the band's leader, co-lead singer, and other guitarist) did an absolutely smoking lead guitar intro on "Autograph" that actually took up about the first third of the song.

As for great jazz guitar intros, much of Pat Metheny's work with Pat Metheny Group comes to mind. Two songs that stand out in my mind at this moment are "Phase Dance", on the album "Pat Metheny Group" (ECM, 1978), and the title track from "American Garage" (ECM, 1979).

Another one that comes to my mind is the title track to "Land of the Midnight Sun" (Columbia, 1976) by Al DiMeola.

I'll go for some more obscure ones:

The Who: "In a Hand Or Face" (Who By Numbers); Pete's opening lead in "Guitar & Pen" (Who Are You)

Marillion: "Alone Again In the Lap Of Luxury" (Brave) simple series of pulloffs, but sets a great attitude for the rest of the song.

"One Fine Day" (This Strange Engine) Nice emotive bluesy licks.

Switchfoot: "Meant To Live" nice stereo trade-offs in that riff.

Petra: Tons; ""Speak to the Sky"- pull offs from heaven! "Without Him We Can Do Nothing", "All About Who You Know"; "Second Wind" etc...

Tree63: "Our King"; "Treasure"; "You Only"

And a semi-classic from my teens:

Tommy Conwell & The Young Rumblers: "I'm Not Your Man"

"Am I enough of a freak to be worth paying to see?"- Separated Out (Marillion)

I've always liked it when a tune will start with a signature solo. The Scorpions were great for that. No One Like You was great and Rock You Like a Hurricane had a stunner of an opener.
