MXR Super Comp - Opinions?

Philip OKeefe

Recommended Posts

Anyone used one of these? No, it's not a Keeley, but then again, it's not priced like one either. ;) How does it compare to the old MXR Dyna Comp? My understanding is that it has true bypass switching, as well as the extra attack control knob.

Opinions?

Hey Phil

I've got a compressor schematic I found online that uses a total of 23 parts, which looks to be a fairly easy build, if you're interested. I don't know how it sounds.

I've never tried a stand-alone compressor pedal. There was a compressor effect in my old Zoom 505, but I couldn't really tell when it was on! It didn't seem to effect the signal at all.

I only briefly tried one in a store once; I'd say that if you like the slightly breathy, pumpy sound of the old MXR Dynacomp and Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer, you'd really like the new one. That is, it really is an improvement on the venerable Dynacomp.

If you're looking for something more transparent and hi-fi like a studio compressor would be, you might have to look elsewhere.

I've been doing a bit of on-line research on currently available compressor-pedals (since it's hard to find a place nearby where I could just line a bunch of them up and compare), and so far it's looking like I'll either get one from AnalogMan or the Barber Tone Press. This last (the Tone Press) might be a bit more affordable, though still a lot pricier than the Dunlop MXR would be, I'd imagine...

Caevan - If you're considering an Analogman, you may want to think about getting a modified Boss CS-3 from Brian Wampler at Indyguitarist instead. I believe he sells a pre-modded CS-3 for $130. Clonk on the link above and scroll down half a page and you will find some sound clips comparing his mod to an Analogman.

He also sells kits and instructions to DIY mod your own pedals. His work appears to be pretty good. Brent Mason uses his modified Blues Driver pedal.

Thanks guys... I just bought one, and tried it with the Univalve and my Casino last night... I really like it. :)

Blue, what I'm going to look for next is probably a top boost / Rangemaster type pedal... got a schematic for one of those? :)

Hey, there ya go! Can't beat that with a stick.

So, what are your observations and comments on the Dunlop/MXR Super Comp, Mr. O'Keefe?

What do you particularly like, and dislike, about it? How would you describe and compare it?

While I am not Blue Strat, I do in fact have one. (A blue Strat, that is.) And, I have a link for you, too...

I don't know the price (you have to contact the guy at sales@bigtonemusic.com), and haven't ordered anything from there yet; but Teahead sent me that link originally (you know, the guy who should be called Pedalhead) ;) , so it aughtta be a good source...

There's a schematic for a treble booster that is supposed to be the actual circuit that Brian May uses over at http://www.geofex.com

schematic here: http://www.geofex.com/FX_images/BrianMayboost.jpg

There's also information for the Dallas Arbiter Range-Master.

EDIT: Just proto-typed my own version. It's got a nasal sound to it. Is that normal? I've got to say, it got me playin' Stone Cold Crazy!! :thu: I used a 2N3906 instead of the BC*** transistor in the schematic, and it biased right with a 10k and a 2k2 instead of the 6k8 and 2k4.

I'm not sure if "nasal" is the word I'd use, but yes - it's not a typical distortion / fuzz box... while the germanium transistor does add a bit of grit, it's more about the boost slamming the front end of your amp... and unlike something like the old EH LPB-1, the boost isn't linear... the Rangemaster boosts more with increased frequency. IOW, you get more highs out of it.

Caevan, the site you linked to is their old one - you can find the new site (with prices, instructions etc. for several projects) right here.

Well, it squishes my guitar tone. :)

I'm not looking for endless sustain and / or using it with super high gain settings on the amp. I'm looking for that classic Beatles / Byrds / Tom Petty "jangle" tone. This definitely gives me a bit of the squish that I consider an essential part of that sound. Think of the 12 string intro to the Byrds "Mr Tambourine Man" and how squashed that is. :) The only other stompbox compressor I have on hand to compare it to is an old Ibanez Soundtank CP-5, and the Super Comp is definitely quieter than that. As far as the squish is concerned, compared to my memories of my Dyna Comp (which I have not had for over twenty years), the Attack knob on the Super Comp seems to offer a little more flexibility over the note attacks and how fast the compressor "grabs" the note.

It does have a tendency to "swell" the notes a bit, but that's part of the sound too... and I think I can probably mimize that a bit with some more tweaking of the controls, or a bit of internal modifications if it comes down to that. ;)

Again, thanks for the link Caevan!:thu:

Hence, the Treble-Booster name. ;) I've been playing with a 2N2222 transistor in there too, and I can't tell much difference. I like the effect it has with the amp at a medium gain setting because I can then hit the preamp and kick it into a metal distortion type sound. :)

Blue, the treble boosters do have somewhat of a "nasal" parked wah sound, the AC30's eq is kinda like a "V" so the extra upper mids and highs the "Rangemaster" adds compliment the sound very well, giving some of those Queen tones with single coils and loads of other classic rock stuff with humbuckers.

I don't think it's so much that it adds treble, rather that it only overdrives the "treble" frequencies (and some mids) whilst cutting some bass. The fact that it cuts bass helps alot with the Vox's tendency to go flabby when the bottom is boosted. You shoud try to pick up a Mullard OC44 transistor, for the classic tone. Also, clones that feature a "mid boost" option sound great with Fender guitars and spanky amps!

I put my Treble Booster together on PCB with a 2N5088 transistor. It's got loads more gain than the 2N3906 or 2N2222 had. I put it together in a MXR sized box I had sitting around. I took the box to work and removed all the black paint and polished the outside until it looked like chrome. When I came home I stuffed all the guts into it and found the perfect large knob for it. :D I like it! :thu:

Yeah Tea, the treble booster doesn't really add anything to the signal, but as you said, it attenuates the bass frequencies before boosting the signal so you get a percieved increase in treble.

Thanks for the tip, Mudcat! I'll be sure to follow that up.

Blue Strat- too cool! I love the 'finish'. Nice job!

Thanks Caevan! I did a head-count. I'm up to 12 pedals, not including the ones on the bench. 8 of those are store bought, 2 of those 8 are modified. That leaves 4 that I've built from scratch; all fuzz or distortion. I've got 3 on the bench; a wah, a tremolo, and a mini-amp. I'm getting bored with distortion. A lot of the stuff I'm working on was built a while back and I'm just now getting around to putting it all in boxes.

Has anyone else tried the Demeter Compulator? I think I'm the only person I know that has one, and I LOVE IT!

It makes every other compressor that I've tried sound like a box with a "suck" knob. ;)

So, gtrwiz, what other compressors have you tried in comparison? Expiring Minds want to know!

That's next on my "To build" list...
I've always wanted a "suck knob" on some piece of gear.:D
Now, that's one of those things that's additive-only; you can put the suckiness in, but you can't subtract it!

I just want a death-ray switch, and a time-machine and a magic ring. And cup-holders.
