LiveMusic
I am doing a gig on Election Night. Might be nobody there, might be good, who knows. Maybe people will be tired of the stuff and ready for a beer. In my limited promotion people have said yeah, they'd come, they'll be ready. Can you think of any appropriate songs? Patriotic songs, protest songs? Political songs, satire, whatever. Dylan has some good ones... Blowin In The Wind The Times They Are A-Changin I don't know if I could do America The Beautiful or not. God Bless The USA, Lee Greenwood... I don't like that song. I don't know if I'd do it or not but I'll think about it. I would say Masters of War (Dylan) but I don't know if I'm going to play stuff that would be so in-the-face that it would alienate the Repubs that will be there. This is Texas and I'll have a few that are die-hard Bush fans. Whatever I do, I gotta balance it out. > > > [ Live! ] < < <
Billster
This morning the radio station I listen to played another Dylan song called "God on our side" Don't know if the Texas crowd would be too happy with that - if they get it. Darklava
Now in darkness, world stops turning As the war machine keeps burning No more war pigs of the power Hand of god has sturck the hour Day of judgement, god is calling On their knees, the war pigs crawling Begging mercy for their sins Satan, laughing, spreads his wings Have a nice day The story of life is quicker then the blink of an eye, the story of love is hello, goodbye. Chris.
I'm too young to remember but in the 60's i reckon songs were much more political than these days, musicians really used music as a tool for venting their opinions.. ..one modern one that springs to my mind in that new greenday one, about redneck agendas. depending on angst levels and political orientation, obviously. http://www.faceoffriendship.org/fof_banner_468.gif

Shoes
I like the idea of playing War Pigs.. good call (no offence to the service guys out there) A Political Blues (Little Feat 1978) Born in the U.S.A. (Bruce Stringsteen 1984) Keep in mind that most political songs are either against politics in general or right wing idiologies in specific or for socialism in an idealic form. I wouldn't say this gets the vote out and if there's one thing I (as a Canadian) would love to see it's you people getting the vote out Vote Early, Vote Often I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder. picker
I don't know what to tell you to play, but try to pick a song or songs that are FOR something as opposed to just being against something, you know what I mean? All the protesyt songs of the 60's that I can recall were basically just down on stuff. Everybody I know is sick to death of all the attack ads and self-agrandisement we've been subjected to over the last year, annd maybe you could do something to lighten the mood. I suppose you could do the Fleetwood Mac tune Clinton used when he was reelected, "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow". There is a James Harmon tune called "Piece-Work Politicians" that advocates paying them by the job they get done, on his album Lonesome Moon Trance , but you might not be able to get that in time. I suppose you could do "Keep On Rockin' In The Free World" or something, but wear your riot gear... Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else. Lee Flier
Good call on "What's So Funny..." - great song! Rockin' in the Free World is good too... as for war protest songs, my personal favorite is Dylan's "Masters of War." Then there's always "Electioneering" by Radiohead. revolead
Patriotic Songs: "American Soldier" Toby Keith "Red, White, and Blue" Toby Keith "Star-Spangled Banner" Jimi Hendrix version "The Clansman" Iron Maiden Protest Songs: Practically any modern song by any modern punk band is a protest song. Greenday, Yellowcard, all kinds of bands that think they need to put a "Rock Against Bush!" CD out. Personally, I think they're hurting their careers. I wouldn't put out a rock against any president CD, whether I liked him or not. Your listeners that do will slowly turn away. A lot of musicians protest our current president anyway, so especially since you're going to be in Texas, I would watch what I was playing. You want to be popular right? Shut up and play. spiral light
Between The Wars by Billy Bragg is a favorite of mine. Fortunate Son is a good one as CCR is one of Bushs favorite bands. If You Tolerate This then Your Children Will Be Next by the Manic Street Preachers. OK, mine are a bit more of the protest type.... www.windhamhill.com - Shameless Advertising!
