I happened to stop into a music shop and there it was. I'm so ashamed. Even worse, my wife is spending the weekend at the casino with her sister. This is going to cost me...

Are you tryin' to show me up, Paul??? ;):P

I think that your level of hot water will be directly related to how much your wife wins/loses at the casino...

But, of course, you'll have to "spin" it either way... You know, "Well, honey, you just spent $______ on your fun, so I spent....". Or you go with "Well since you just won $_____, it really hasn't cost us anything...".

Either way, looks like a nice axe! :thu:

May all your thoughts be random!

Actually that was the deciding factor. I've been watching these things for some time. They're being closed out everywhere for $899. But all that are left are either the matte finished ones with the '57 PAFs or the gloss finished with P100s. I specifically wanted exactly the one in the pic: '57 PAFs, Wine Red, Gold Hardware. I figured since they were all sold out, I was safe. Then I walked into the store... (cue Jaws theme) It was there and called out to me. And when the shop owner dropped it to $750. It had me. I tried to explain to my wife that it followed me home but she was having none of it. She did thank me for removing any guilt she may have felt about having her way at the casino. :)

Damn, you beat me to it. I hate to say it, but as much as I admire Howe's work, his soloing always used to drive me nuts. A buddy of mine terms it "flapping".

But, I watched him playing "Trooper" live at Sandstone here a couple years ago. I used to play it with these impossible fingerings, and he's doing something further up the neck with easy looking fingerings. Not that I should really care, I'm never gonna perform that song live anyway...but I am rather curious.

Rationalization and justification. No matter what I don't think non-guitar playing people will ever understand.

My girlfriend actually asked how many guitars I planned on buying when I mentioned a weekly trip to the music store. I just used the classic (well not yet, but it will be) analogy: A guitar shop is like a stripclub for me. Makes you wonder what she thinks I do in my spare time. :D

Shut up and play.

PBBPaul- SUUUHWHEEEEEEEEEEEDT!!

Real beauty there! Depending on how you string it and play it, you can get some seriously nice jazz tones out of a box like that; pretty much a cosmetically stripped-down 175, as many have noted; also a lot like a Herb Ellis model, with an added bridge pickup.

Personally, visually speaking, I'd like one with the "vintage" sunburst and gold hardware, though I don't think they offered that specific combination, In any case, I'm glad you walked into that store and found exactly what you would have wanted, for an exceptional deal! It was like that for me with my cherry sunburst Les Paul, too! Seemed too good to be true when you first saw it, didn't it?

Oh, yeah- what was the store that you bought it from?

Hey, Tedster- this may seem like a dumb question, but what part of Starship Trooper are you referring to, that you play in one position/fingering while Steve Howe (aparantly) plays it "up high"? Just what were these "impossible fingerings"?

Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do?

$750 means you certainly did NOT pay too much.

I found it at a little local shop in St. Francis, WI called "Blue Flame Music". Very nice people to do business with and they have a bunch of unusual guitars. They also had a mid-70s Twin Reverb that had been totally Black-Faced - including the cosmetics - for $849.00. The thing looked like a dead mint '65. Sounded amazing too.

Paul,

Congrats on your new beauty!

I've got one of the blonde ones with the gold hardware... and I really dig it.

I originally thought of it as a "jazz" box, but I was happy to find out it can "rock" as well!

At that price, it's a great value... how about a new "clip" with you playing it...

We'll be waiting! :thu:

I'm still "guitplayer"!

Check out my music if you like...

Thank you. I'll be trying it out at tomorrow night's gig. It may take me a while to get a new clip up. I'm already months behind on our collaboration project. But who knows? I might get some inspiration. I tweaked the setup a bit and tried it out tonight through my Blues DeVille and Bassman monster rig. Very sweet sounding. My kids were slamming doors and yelling at me to turn it down. :D I can't wait to try it tomorrow with my Bandmaster rig.

The first time I tried one of these it was through a Vibro King. That combination really got me hooked. My Bandmaster 3X10 combo sounds really similar so I'm pretty excited.

So I have to tell one quick story.

When I was in this little shop yesterday, they had a guitar hanging in the corner that was totally unique looking. It was made from beautiful Bird's Eye Maple with a dark finish and Gold Harware. It had a chambered neck-through body. It was made by W Paul Jaworsky who happened to be in the shop when I was there. They apparently hand make about 20-30 guitars per year out of "Timeless Timber". Timeless Timber is old growth Maple that didn't make it to the mills in the 1800's but instead sunk to the bottom of Lake Superior. Most of this wood is 400-600 years old with some as old as 1000 years. Because of the density of the old northern forests, the old growth stuff has 10 times the grain density of what we get today. There are a couple of companies that have been harvesting these old logs from the bottom of the lake but the Dept of Nat Resources and the local Indian tribes have filed injunctions claiming that they're taking away fish beds and halted all harvesting of this wood now. Mr. Jaworsky told me that they have enough wood to build maybe 30 more guitars and then that will likely be it. The guitar they had in the shop was one of their medium grade units and was priced at only $4000. The thought was that they'll be going through the roof in a couple of years due to the lack of availability of the wood.

I refused to touch it with a credit card in my pocket.

:D LOL, Paul.

The wood he's described was bought up by another manufacturer. (What they brought up from the bottom of Superior, that is.) I don't remember who. Apparently the crushing pressure of all that ice cold water is credited with improving an already incredible piece of wood. I'd love to see that guitar.

Congratulations on you new ES-135. When I worked at Gibson Customer Support, we had a '92 ES-135 in the office. (P-90's... schwweeeeet!) I used to take it downstairs during lunch and play in the small auditorium at corporate. (Through a GA-15RV.. Again. Schwweeeeeeeet!!) Enjoy yours! It's a beaut.

Well I DO know that DW Drums has a "Timeless Timbre" 7 piece drum set! I think it costs about $14,000 for the 7 shells!

They had the Epi version of the GA15-RVT at the shop as well. They wanted like $250. for it. I think a GA-77RVT or GA79-RVT may be my next amp purchase if I can find a decent one. I had an old Atlas years ago that in my youthful stupidity threw out. I love the sound of the old Gibson amps.
