Alesis Qs7.1

My first and only synth is the qs7.1. I purchased it a couple years ago after being a offered a great deal. I have read somewhere that you can actually trick the qs7.1 into sequencing, and if anyone has tried it, what do you think of its capabilities? And what are your overall opinions on the qs7.1 and what is it ideal for. Because in a few months, it might end up being a midi controller for me.

It is possible to play back both samples and sequences with a PCMCIA card and a computer used to program them. Do you have the manual? If not you can download it at http://alesis.com/downloads/manuals/QS71_QS81_Manual.pdf

that will tell you how to do it. If you need a PCMCIA card you can buy it here

Post back if you have more questions. :)

Lyrics. Wasted space between solos.

I can't tell you, but I can play it for you.

There are some tricks you can do with the arpeggiator that come pretty close to being sequencing. They used that trick a lot on the Hip-Hop card...

I played in an 8 piece horn band. We would often get bored. So...three words:

Actually, I don't believe the QS7.1 has an arpeggiator. Are you possibly referring to the Tracking Generator? This can be set up to alter the pitch of notes over time but it is not what is commonly thought of as an arpeggiator these days.

At least some of the Hip Hop card consisted of sample loops to create the grooves on that card.

The QS series makes a pretty good controller. Probably not as good as a high end controller but better than most synths.

Some limitations I know about.

  • You can only transpose two octaves up or down. This limits where you can put instruments on thekeyboard when doing compex splits.

  • The bank switch won't work with many modules. It uses the low bight for the bank number when most modules use the high byte (or perhaps its the other way round). Not a major problem - you just make sure all the patches you use live are in a single bank. Not a problem unless you really need more than one user bank to fit all your stock patches.

The ones I dissected seemed to have some kind of arpeggiating going on. Maybe it was the tracking generator you described.

If you waited long enough on certain patches, the bass line and the drums would get out of sync with each other. This was due to limitations of the generator...

In program mode this is correct. But.... you can save a user Program that's shifted in pitch, an then shift it again when you place that program in a Mix. I'v had some pretty high-pitched stuff on the first (left-hand) octave of the keyboard.

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

You're referring to the tracking generator, but by no means is it an argeggiator or sequencer.

Using number values, you can approximate pitch and timing. you can do some fun stuff wih it, but if you want to sequence, there are much better ways to do it externally.
