Okay, comp people, remember when I said I had a funeral song for our Departures comp that I had written, and then later wound up changing it to a collab tune using lyrics from a friend of mine? Well, maybe you don't. It's in the KC Comp 12 thread somewhere. Anyhow, sadly, I came up with a reason to record the funeral song: a friend's 17 y/o daughter died of a drug overdose last week. Mom is a member over at recordingproject.com, so another RP friend and I recorded this for her. Of interest to keyboardists: piano was recorded live with my new Zoom H-4, just placed on a chair in a practice room at my college, with a small Yamaha grand. If I had it to do over, I'd probably have lifted the cover a bit - slightly muffled sound - but I'm still real pleased with how it came out. Song lyrics are posted in the linked thread - don't worry, you don't have to join RP to listen. And a chart is available for you church musos who think you might need it (this is the kind of song that I wish I never "needed" to use). Just send me a pm with your email addy, I'll send a pdf. The church-musically astute among you may notice that the quote at the beginning and end from C.H. Gabriel's "His Eye Is On the Sparrow" - this song was an attempt to look at questions that song didn't quite answer for me. Here's some Catholic Christmas pop: Wrote this 8 years ago, finally got it recorded this past weekend at our Advent / Christmas concert. Did a little post-processing to bring the noise down and try to fix the resulting EQ issues, and mixed in some vocal lines from the rehearsal CD where we fumbled them live. The rest of the mass hasn't seen daylight yet, except the Gloria, 10 years and 3 churches ago - THAT'S a major piece of heavy lifting for the choir. The alleluia went so well, though, that I'm considering using the whole thing. And I'm thinking about a slight rewrite of the alleluia so we can use it as an anthem for Trinity Sunday - it would be 4 verses then. Thanks for listening, Sue - I hoped you were gonna give a listen. No deep linking allowed for any of these, but you can post the page link here. www.nowhereradio.com allows you to set up an artist page and use up to 25mb (I think) free. Wow - almost a month with no action here. Here's my latest - a Nawlins-style slap at that crazy bitch Katrina, though the lyrics are as much Bayou as they are Big Easy. Track isn't in final form yet - gotta unmuffle the back tracks, and fix the background vocals. Thanks to my recordingproject.com buddies HevyD (rhythm guitar), Buddah (slide guitar), Hotz (trombone) and Steev (clarinet, harmonica, background vocals). I'm on lead and background vocs, sloppy piano, and general midi tuba. Drum loops courtesy of Spectrasonics' Katrina collection. Any comments on the mix, get em in fast! I'll probably take one more stab at a fix before Christmas, then leave it as is. Tempting to try to sell this one - I could so hear Paul Barrere singing this, with a nice little Bill Payne break in the middle... Very nice, Bart. Definitely a Lenten vibe. This was one of my first Bach pieces - per my prof, who's a musicologist as well as an organist, the academic world has now accepted these as true Bachs. Not sure what changed their minds... Who's the buider on the tracker? How did you record it? Anyhow, thanks for sharing it. I love the "little" P&F's, and it's hard to find recordings. Gangsu, plenty of critics will agree with you about the whole Miles BB&B (Bitches Brew and Beyond) phenomenon. At its best, it's sort of thematic pointillism - several theme clips are repeated, layered, altered slightly, all over an "infectious" groove - but plenty of folks are immune to the infection. And THAT'S in the hands of the masters. When a bunch of amateur hacks get involved, it can degenerate to a submusical mulligan stew that neither nourishes nor tickles the palate. I'm thinking we landed in the middle there - I was WAY too busy to make the pointillism thing happen, but the other guys did their jobs, and an improved mix, one that deemphasized the keys, would take it close to where it was supposed to be. BTW, I'm really a barband player masquerading as a church organist, rather than vice-versa... Best, Jay

Well, my band's off again, while the drummer hides out from some angry women, LOL. Meantime, here's something we recorded in the basement of one of the angry women a couple of months ago. Just a funk jam that turned into a Miles thing when the guest trumpeter took us in that direction. It was just a jam, so my usual discretion and good taste (yeah, right) went out the window, as I was trying out as many Zawinulesque ideas as I could fit in - except the one about leaving lots of space, LOL. Mix was out of my control - guitarist's rig (Korg I think?). He mixed himself kinda low, and me kinda high. I'm using a QS-8 with the vintage keys card - yay DB! This one's just for fun - somebody posted the first live-in-the-backyard recording from this year's 4th Annual Jamfest & BBQ (a joint production of www.homerec.com and www.recordingproject.com ), held in Connecticut in August each year. About 60 of us this year, but I was the only keyboardist. That's me on QS-8, VTGreen81 on stix, and FMMahoganyrush (our host) on guitar and vox. I believe we had a bass player along for the ride on this - sure sounds that way - but I'm drawing a blank on who it was. I was really pleased with the QS-8 sound on this. Think I was using the 3BarsFull patch on the Vintage Keys card. Yay Dave! I was telling the guys at RP that this was one of the first rock/pop songs I ever learned, 30+ years ago now. Oh yeah, and in 2 minutes or less, LOL. Give it a listen - I was going for an old school vibe, so little bits of wacky post-processing. Piano is an mdaPiano VSTi, everything else is Acid loops. LOTS of work chopping up those horns into something useable. I'm especially pleased with how that came out.
