Wow, finally got out of jail huh? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

The song story has all the instrumentation for this piece, I'll be happy to answer any questions about it that you have...

Dave, one small amendment to the description, the Heaven CD for which this piece is targeted is a work in progress, I have 4 more songs to complete for it before it can be released... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Listened quickly last night to the tune. What struck me was how well it is recorded, & patience exhibited in executing the themes. I'll listen again later whem I have more time & post something further.

Very smooth...nice sounds all the way around.

I was wanting to hear some pitch bend licks on the bass part, y'know a fretless slide here or there...but that's just busy me. Overall this tune fits the genre really well, you originally had this in Ambient right?

Nice relaxing tune.

Before I listened to it I read the description.

And there were definitely images in my head during the song of the state after death. (Deep, huh)

But I waited for a solo synth coming in after a while, playing over the bass part.

As always, only my opinion.

Overall impression: Good work

Thanks guys!

smedis, the melody is purposefully sparse. This whole body of work is going to be totally about atmosphere, it is not really intended to grab your attention that hard, but rather to insidiously slide into your subconscious... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Steve, I tried it on real fretless, but my intonation sucks and I couldn't make it work to my satisfaction.... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Nice and dreamy, albeit a little spooky for the afterlife. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif Nicely arranged and mixed. This is one of the best uses of a sampled fretless bass patch that I have ever heard.

Thanks Dan! I'd have used my fretless bass, but my intonation SUCKS big wampum, I need a lot more practice.. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif Plus, that patch on my RD-500 is so expressive, it's very easy to go to it and make it sound natural..

As to the spookiness, it's deliberate. The CD that I am preparing that this song will be on (to be called Heaven) is a concept piece that will be my musical interpretation of the soul's journey through death, the uncertainties and fears of awaiting the soul's destination, the journey, and ultimate redemption. The whole CD will emobody a certain spookiness until the final resolution at the end, like a classical suite written in minor with a Picardy 3rd on the end... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have to echo the comments about the bass patch. It's "better" sounding than if you had played with a "real" fretless... at least better this mood.

The Light of Valhalla... so this song expresses the soul seeing the "light" that all the "back from the dead" people talk about?

Geez, guitar players never get that "deep".

Awesome.

You know, that's EXACTLY what I was thinking, but lacked the words to properly express it. Thanks for your insight! That will help me a lot when I'm ordering the songs for the CD. It's supposed to be a chonological journey, and you've helped me clarify where in the journey this belongs! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'm glad you enjoyed the piece too! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Better late than never. I finally got a chance to download and listen to the cd compilation tunes this weekend. It was pretty awe inspiring. I am still on a high about the great talent we have rubbing shoulders here.

Nice use of percussion, before the airy pad comes in. I am trying to identify the synth and I am thinking a Korg, but I am not sure. This is not my kind of music. But its very tastefully done, with smooth tones. I would like to hear a more variety in the pads, but thats just hyper old me.

Those are cool chords. minor 7ths with flatted fifths?) Every time they retreat and advance they caress the soul. Lovely harmonies. The tune works for what is intended. There is something very healing about it.

Regards,

Jerry

Thanks Jerry! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

It is indeed Korg Triton in there, but the pad and bass patch are RD-500...

For your edification, here are the changes:

Gm9-Db7-Am9-Abm/Eb

Gm9-Db7-Am9-Abm/Eb

Cmaj9+11-Bbmaj9+11+Bm9-D7b9

Gm9-Db7-Am9-Abm/Eb

The cymbal rolls and bar chimes were real, recorded in realtime, the drums are the DR-660.

I wish that I knew what other compositions were on the CD, "Heaven". It was so interestingly described.

I wonder if Shakespeare wrote his own Cliff Notes, would they even be close to the ones available today?

Wow. That was very nice of you. Thank you... To answer some of your question, only 4 parts of the CD are done. The Light Of Valhalla is going to come near the end, 5th or 6th, when the soul's direction is becoming clear, but fear of the aftermath is present. The CD will end with the piece called Ascension, which symbolizes the trip to the final destination, through the storm of life energy. The Haunted I think will be 2nd or 3rd, symbolizing uncertainty and fear. It will be anchored in the middle (probably track 4) by the piece, The Journey. The Journey is designed to invoke an etheral sense of lightness, but with a plodding, inexorable sense of motion, rest, motion, and rest.

Those 4 songs are available on my MP3 page. I still have a ways to go in my own self-discovery, which will facilitate the rest of this body of work's completion.

My goal for the CD is to have someone listen to the whole thing in pitch blackness, and have their soul take this virtual journey, to cause the listener to contemplate where they might go after this existence.

I hope that the one snippet had a fraction of that effect on you.

This whole thing is quite a departure for me, I'm really a smooth jazz player. I'm really enjoying the experiment though! I'm actually working on 2 CDs at once, my Jazz release has 7 complete pieces, only 2 or 3 more to go there. (Those are available on my page too...)
