WAVE FILES: The Universal Format

Recommended Posts

Posted

There is a CD-quality format that EVERYBODY can use to share music files. It is the "wave file" (.wav).

Anyone can dump wave files into their DAW, regardless of the program they use or the platform of their DAW. Mac, PC, doesn't matter.

So, we can all share files. The only question is how to distribute those files.

If you have a web site, you can post your wave files on the net for people to download. There is a lossless compression program called Shorten which you can use to compress the file down to about half of it's original size. This makes it easier to upload and download the file.

If you do not have a web site, you can send a CD with your wave file to me, and I will post it up on my web site for others to download. There are other people here who will also offer this service. Post here or send me a PM, if you are interested.

People with broadband connections will be able to easily download these files, whereas those with dial-up connections may require a CD to be sent to them.

In the near future, there will be even better lossless compression programs which will facilitate this collaboration process in a much more efficient way. At that point, there will be no need to send CDs in the mail, even to those with slow dial-up connections and no web site.

For now, we can share wave files online with Shorten, and offline by sending CDs.

And here we go! :thu:

I think less loss would be accurate, not lossless.

In the perfect world people would upgrade to higher bandwidth, the costs come down, and schemes go away.

Is that a portrait of you, Khan?

Yes. It's me laughing in your general direction. :thu:
