Ludwig Fab 4

I am about to buy a Ludwig Classic Maple Fab 4 kit (20/12/14/14) and I was wondering if anyone has any information in reference to the quality of these drums (are they worth the $$$$$). I have always played a 22" kick and have not had access to a 20" kick in gig situations so I'm a little skeptical. My current set is a 98' Pearl export 4pc. Can somebody please offer some good advise?

It's been my experience that anything that says 'Fab Four' or 'Beatles' on it tends to be way overpriced. I'd check around for a 60's Ludwig set and get it for a lot less than a signiture set. Example:

Also, the black oyster finish stuff costs way more on average...

Thanks for your reply Dave. The best price I'v found on the Fab 4 20" kick kit in white marine pearl is $1,650 and that is with hardware. I'v shopped around and I can't find a NEW 100% maple kit for that. One thing I'm sure of is that its gotta be Ludwig. I liked the club dates!

ss: I know the guys over at Ludwig.

They are making a hard baseball try to make a comeback ... and I cheer them on.

I will say though ... you could find a jewel of a deal on a 60 or 70's vintage Ludwig set on ebay!

I would not be too itchy with the check writing fingers. The older I get ... them more I realize that wisdom dictates taking a few extra days before dropping cash!

Just a thought.

Amen to what DC said. From a guitar standpoint, those Epi "Lennon Casinos" are outrageous. Fortunately, the "real vintage" pricing doesn't seem to have hit the drum market. If you want to buy a real 60s Casino...the price is way high.

SS-I have owned several different Ludwig kits, and my main kit right now is a 70's maple Ludwig kit. I have done a lot of recording with this kit, and always get compliments about how good they sound. I am mistified as to why Ludwig drums have lost popularity. (Hey, if Bonham, Ringo, Buddy Rich, etc. played 'em, there must be a reason.) I still play them because they sound great, are well made, and hold up well. I couldn't care less what drum company is "hip" this week. As for the fab four kit, I would recommend that over a vintage 60's kit because it has the up-dated hardware. Anyone who has owned the 60's Ludwig kits will tell you that the hardware is weak...

I think the BIG reason that Ludwig has lost popularity is that this is an internet world now and Ludwig refuses to update their web site. I know people would think this is not a factor but believe me, it is! What else could it be? Ludwig make GREAT drums and I don't know where I could have found a %100 maple kit for the low price of Ludwig. PLUS....the guys at ludwig will do just about anything to make you happy if your middle man can communicate with them well. 2112 percussion have done just that.

My fav kick drum size is 20". It is so versatile, it can be a rock drum, a jazz drum, funk/.soul, you name it.

FWIW, I got a fabulous fab 4 style kit abet Yamaha D-40 series, circa 1964, from a used music shop a couple yrs ago in imaculate shape, and including a beautiful 20" Paiste 602 ride and a pair of 13" 602 hats for the unreal price of $300. It also included a circa 1972 Ludwig 5-1/2x14 metal snare that rocks hard, two very nice cymbal stands, and the original hat stand and kick pedal, all in perfect condition.

this is hands down the kit of choice for those who use the house drums (we have several sets to choose from.)

Hope this is helpful.

I'll agree with what where02190 posted, and relate a story on the subject. I'm a recording engineer as well as a drummer, and recently had a young alternative-type group in the studio. the drummer had a nice new set of Tama Starclassics that sounded great except for the kick. We just couldn't get it to sound right. I suggested we use my 70's Ludwig kick instead. Bingo!---instant great kick sound that everyone is still raving about. All we did was throw a mic in it and roll. There is something special about those 70's (and other era) Ludwigs, especially the kick...
