...well, actually Schaumburg. I'll be near N. Meacham Rd. and I-90 the week of 8/14. Anyone in the area care to meet for dinner one evening that week?

That may be a go, JM. My parents live about 5 miles from there, and there are a million decent restaurants nearby. I'm supposed to be in Michigan that week, but I'll PM you if I can swing it.

Ah, Schaumburg...but enough about that.

Were I still a Chicago or Skokie resident, I would have happily joined.

Enjoy your visit. If you're unlucky, 0-9 will indeed be available for a bread-breaking session.

Peace.

I would be honored to meet any and all that can show up. I've never been to Chicago, but everyone that I know that has is very jealous.

Have fun!

Oh, man. Reminds me of Robert Plant's "Worse then Detroit".

You would've loved it today, then. It was 102 on my deck. Heat index was 110 or so.

In February, we had a -15 day that had a wind chill of -66 degrees F. So there's roughly 180 degrees of variance in the Chicago climate. I love it here, even though I'm in a far suburb now.

Can you legitimately get away with saying that you're even in a Chicago suburb?!?

Peace.

Technically no, even though I can get to downtown 20 minutes quicker than when I was in Arlington Heights. But most people in NW Indiana consider themselves a Chicago burb.

"For instance" is not proof.

Some people get very touchy about whether or not you are "from Chicago", but only if you are around the city. I have a friend who lives in Oak Park and is actually about 2 blocks from the Chicago city limits, however when he is around people from the area he says Oak Park. If he was here in Texas he would just say Chicago because it is easier.

I think this stems from a bunch of kids from Naperville (West suburb) or Libertyville (North suburb) whose parents have deep pockets proclaiming that they are "from Chicago" and ticking off a bunch of street kids.

I'm from about 2 hours south of Chicago.....

That's true of towns like Whiting, E. Chicago, etc. but not really of Gary.

Gary, only 25 miles and 30 minutes away, is technically a Chicago suburb, but very few people commute to Chicago for work. It's not like say, Aurora "Waynes World", IL, which is something like 60 miles away from Chicago but houses many people who commute to Chicago. Technically Kenosha, WI is a suburb of Chicago, but I don't think many Kenoshans feel that way.

From its inception, Gary has been a company town, and that company is US Steel. US Steel is a shadow of its former self, unfortunately, and Gary shows how much it has felt that loss.

Point is, Gary is not the bitch of Chicago, like say Newark is to NYC, or K.C.-Kansas is to Kansas City (MO). Gary does not provide cheap labor who cross into those cities in the morning for work and then return at night. We are independent, self-sufficient (well we used to be) and Chicago flat out FEARS Gary and that's the way we like it!

I never say I'm from Chicago - I tell people I'm from Gary - they either say "I'm sorry," or "Where?"

This message has been sponsored by the Information Bureau of Gary - which is of course closed due to lack of revenue.

I'd check out the Jazz Showcase in Chicago - they get the top jazz musicians. Drumming legend Roy Haynes is there this week.

I get the same reaction when I tell people I'm from East St. Louis.

I know exactly where East St. Louis is. I spent a year at the AFB there in Belleville, and that's where my daughter was born.

someone had to mention Naperville... that's where I currently reside (against my will, long story).

I love the area, just hate the people LOL.

East Saint and Gary are very similar - Gary's probably three times the size, but tbey are both "Chocolate" cities, to steal a Parliment phrase, and both do a lot of business in porn and strip clubs. I've been to East Saint several times - they have some real good clubs (open late thanks to Illinois laws), which is something Gary doesn't.

You and I can both look at Flint, Michigan with envy. Now there's some slums you can be proud of!

When someone looks at you in puzzlement when you say, "Gary," you need to get CMDN to do his rousing rendition of "Gary Indiana Gary Indiana Gary Indiana is my hometown..." from The Music Man. He absolutely kills on those lyrics.

Gary and E. St. Louis definitely share a lot in common. Tough times, tough cities.

Peace.

Now we're getting a little closer to my old stomping grounds in Southern Illinois!!!

As for Chicago-style pizza (not to totally derail the thread), but I would have to list Malnatti's at the top of the list with Edwardo's in second. Of course, you also have some honorable mentions (Bill's Pub, Giordano's, Rosati's, Pizzeria Uno, Gino's East, etc). :)

09: PM sent.

I'll be in Chicago all next week. I'm sent my contact info to 09 since he may be around that week, but if anyone else is interested in a dinner get-together, you'll be welcome too.

Hope to see some of you soon...

When we used to visit my brother-in-law in Chicago (now he's in Batavia), we would order frozen fresh spinach pies from Edwardo's to bring home. Usually 2 or 3 of them. They bake them half way, freeze them, and if we picked them up on the way to O'Hare, the pies would often make it home without thawing. (Of course, that was pre-9/11. No way to quickly get through security now.) Man, that's a great pizza.

Haven't been to Malnatti's. Maybe the next trip.
