I am so sad, i just heard the news that Don Alias passed away. I loved him! he was a percussionist and drummer extraordinaire. He was the guy on congas playing on Jaco's version of " Donna Lee "- i saw him with live a couple of times, and he was awesome, he also played in the legendary Joni Mitchell band with Jaco, Pat Metheny , Miichael Brecker and Lyle Mays...

may the Lord God receive him with open arms. We have lost a treasure... :(

rest in peace, Don

Praise ye the LORD.

....praise him with stringed instruments and organs...

Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD.

Truly sad about Don Alias. I saw him with David Sanborn a few years ago and he just killed on a cajon (among other instruments). I never knew a wood box could be that musical.

Re: Mike Brecker. I heard on Ramsey Lewis' syndicated radio show that a donor match had been found and he is responding to treatment. Any confirmation of this? It would be wonderful news.

Well that's something positive to balance the loss of Don Alias, at least.
From Brecker's website:

Jan. 11, 2006

Michael was the recipient of an experimental haplo (half-matching) blood stem cell transplant in Minneapolis. His daughter was the donor. While Mike is seriously ill, every day out of the hospital is encouraging. We are hopeful but there is a long and difficult road ahead. There will be various future donor drive-by activities in which we could use your assistance and support. If you are interested, just send an e-mail to info@michaelbrecker.com and in the subject line write "I want to help."
