SteveC Posted May 15, 2005 Share Posted May 15, 2005 It's always fun to share. I'll go in order of strings: Wendler electroCoustic fretless 4 string. Sounds like an upright. Very cool. Plays better every day. I use this for jazz quartet and big band gigs. Yamaha BB605 fretted 5 in wine red. I guess this would be considered my "main" bass. Bartolini preamp and pups. I play this for church and the "new" band. See the "set list" topic. Carvin fretless 6. Bartolini preamp and pups. This doesn't get used as much. Mostly for when I try to play Yellowjackets stuff. Been using this one for everything, since it was my only bass One black Palmer B-05. My first fretless (and also a 5-string), which I'll go and pay on Tuesday (when the banks open) and which will hopefully arrive soon !!! The fretless will be put to use in my not-so-active "easy listening" band, a band consisting of me and two friends and playing soft versions of soft songs (we do a slooooow version of Travis' Sing amongst others) "I'm a work in progress." In order of amount used:-Ibanez BTB400 - Trans Red-Epiphone Rockbass - Black with stickers from my best friend's brother who owned it before me-Gibson Grabber (currently under developement) - Bare wood but not for long All 4-stringers. Hopefully a 5 coming this Summer. Possibly a fretless soon after. The URB is an American Standard made in the 20's. Plywood but you'd never guess it from the look or sound. The SX Fretless is fun - I still suck on fretless though, but it's good practice The Cort P-Bass has a nice fat P sound, but I don't really dig the big fat P neck. My most recent aquisition is an 80's yamaha bb1000s which features reverse p and j pickups, a burst finish, and a nice fenderish vibe I also still have my first, a yamaha rbx260. Though, I've been jonesing for a nice fretless, and I've alwys thought the idea of a project bass would be cool....maybe fralin pickups with a black jbass body, badassII bridge, black pickguard, maple neck with pearl blocks, maybe I could throw in the j retro marcus miller style preamp and make it a marcus style bass.......GAS ATTACKS AGAIN!!! Hiram Bullock thinks I like the band volume too soft (but he plays guitar). In the last couple of years, I have bought several - for a couple of reasons: When I was young(er), I had the chance to play (but not own) a few that I liked very much, but could not afford. Now that I'm old(er), I can afford those basses that I lusted after. I work with a few bands that need a specific sound. Yes, I could get a reasonable facsimile of "that" sound from 1 or 2 basses - but it is enjoyable to play a bass that 'fits' each bands' purpose. Except for the 5'ers, the others all get pretty much equal time (The 5's are fairly new to me, and the jury is still out). All the fours are strung differently (gauges and types). I'm not a collector - just appreciative of the visual/sonic differences between basses... ...It's my only vice, really!! Love it. Had to sell my very nice Schecter C-4 Diamond Series EMG equipped 4 string to afford the Tribute, unfortunately. So I went from one great Korean-made bass to another! So the next logical step would be a Lakland Skyline, right? But not till I could afford to buy it without having to sell the G&L Tribute which I will keep for all time! Actually, were I to buy another bass it would probably be a Fender Mike Dirnt P-Bass. And, I'd love to add a Geddy Loy/Ben Lee Jazz bass to my bass arsenal as well. I like the idea of having different basses with alternate tunings; say a 4 string tuned BEAD and a 5 string tuned EADGC in addition to another 4 and 5 string in standard EADG and BEADG tuning. But all bass purchases must wait until I can afford a decent rig to play them through! (No offense to my trusty little Yorkville XM50C, but even a 50 watt 1x10 combo does have its limitations in some situations...) In order of use: WARWICK Corvette Standard passive fretless 4 - my main bass nowadays. TUNE TWB53 active 5. Cool bass, and good to have a 5 around but definitely my 2nd choice for normal playing. Robelli USB490 cheapo. Got it a few years ago when I was playing bass with a band and I decided the old Aria ProII "ThorSound" was no longer cutting it. So I traded the Aria plus $50 bucks.... the 490 is too light in the body so it has neck-dive but it sounds and plays pretty good. Much better than the Aria. Now that I own the Warwick & Tune I really don't need this bass anymore, but I know I wouldn't get enough $$$ from selling/trading to make it worthwhile so it'll probably stick around. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football.
