Mike Doughty

A true poet, whether in his solo stuff or his phenomenal work with Soul Coughing. You want to hear the person I think is the Tim Burton of music, listen to a track like "City of Motors"

As I was going up the stairs

I met a man who wasn't there

He wasn't there again today

I wish, I wish he'd go away

Peter Gabriel-Here Comes the Flood

Sting-Fortress Around Your Heart

Maynard (from Tool/A Perfect Circle)-Stinkfist

Sheryl Crow-Difficult Kind

Trent Reznor-Ringfinger

Elvis Costello-too many to single out a favorite

and for their simplicity:

Prince

Perry Farrell

"For instance" is not proof.

I decided to play some vinyl this past weekend, and one of the records I played was one I haven't listened to for (probably) 25 years--Genesis Live.

I really dig Peter Gabriel as a solo act but now find his Genesis days singing rather dark and somewhat haunting, IMO.

Live is one of my favorite albums of all time! (despite the mediocre recording) I find his earlier solo CD's pretty dark too, especially the third one (the one with Intruder on it). My other favorite is the lyricist for Tangerine Dream. :D

Greg Graffin. the lead singer of Bad Religion. great writer and singer in my opinion.

Tim Maurer. singer of the local ska band Suburban Legends. writes great material that makes a lot of sense in the songs.

Kurt Cobain. now, i really don't like Nirvana, but he was still a very ingenius writer.

Joni, Dylan or Tom Waits?

I like lyricists that can create a coherent story rather than just string together a series of brilliant images or phrases. Dylan can do both, but he too often settles for a string of images for my taste.

Tom Waits is a great lyricist but I don't enjoy his music enough to want to hear it that often.

So Joni wins.

I couldn't agree more, bad religion are my favourite punk band.

Others: Fat Mike from NOFX, Joey Ramone, Tim Armstrong,Lars Frederiksen, Brody Dalle, Jagger and Richards, Lennon and mccartney,Kurt Cobain,Davey Havok (AFI), Jerry Only from The Misfits (i think he writes now but i dont know who wrote their older stuff),Jack White, Joe Strummer,James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich,Craig Nichols from The Vines (you gotta love the line "she never loved me! she never loved me!she never loved me, why should anyone?) and recently i've been really liking the lyrics from this band The Bronx, dunno which memeber writes though but heres a taste:

Heart Attack American

i'm done telling you that i'm in love

what i have will never be enough

come on baby go live life on your own

everything inside is breaking down

and you don't want to be hanging around

i don't think i want to leave myself alone

i'm done having to apologize

i'm done living inside your eyes

when the lights go out whats left to know

nothing ever makes sense to me

a broken branch of the family tree

kill the lights now baby watch me explode

there is no revolution

and i'm done doing things i don't want to do

there is no restitution and i'm done

i'm done living in this decline

i'm done watching you redesign

come on baby let's go walk out the door

i'm done showing up to f***ing work

taking orders from a f***ing bitch

i'm in the chair now go ahead and flip the switch

i'm done doing things i don't want to do

and i'm sick and tired of setting up to be like you

f***ed up thrown out and overdue

im done

there is no revolution

there is no revolution

there is no revolutiooooooooooooooooooooon DIE!

I'll throw in another vote for Donald Fagen.

And of course Van Morrison is no slouch either.

And then again there is Elvis Costello.

And the guy who wrote the words for all of Elton John's songs: Bernie Taupin.

I would also say that Brian Wilson has written more than his share of great lyrics.

Ben Folds does have a way with words. Also, Neil Young and Bob Dylan as also mentioned above.

David Peel had some great lyrics too.

Paul Kantner, and Grace Slick both have some really great lyrics spread from say 1967 up to like 1977.

Catherine Moon's lyrics I only recently got hip to but are amazing. Sherly Crow, Lush (both Miki and Emma), Stevie Wonder, Jobim, Dorothy Fields.

Oh, and the various lyricists with the Beach Boys had some luck too: not just Wilson/Love, but Tony Asher and Van Dyke Parks. The lyric that would have been Smile! are just amazing.

Richard Shindell

Suzanne Vega

Natalie Merchant

The Band (yeah, yeah, Robbie wrote 'em all...yeah yeah)

Cole Porter

Emily Saliers

Robert Hunter

Brian Wilson

Richard Thompson

Dave Matthews

Marvin Gaye

Jackson Browne

Jimmy Van Heusen

Shawn Colvin

Tory Cassis

Mike Foster

...and others too numerous to mention.

Of these, my personal favorites have to be Richard Shindell and Richard Thompson. Both are experts at painting pictures with words.

o yea! forgot about Werid Al! he is a genius with lyrics

Gump

Werid Al

Gump sat alone on a bench in the park

"My name is Forrest," he'd casually remark

Waitin' for the bus with his hands in his pockets

He just kept sayin' life is like a box of chocolates

He's Gump, he's Gump

What's in his head?

He's Gump, he's Gump, he's Gump

Is he inbred?

pure genius
