BenLoy
If playing metal or hard rock, he should get a Les Paul. Unless he likes having a whammy bar, in which case he should go with something by Ibanez or Ernie Ball...or maybe a Fender with humbuckers. Cthulhu Fhtagn
Ya' gotta LUV threads that start out this way! I don't know guitars from shinola, but my son likes Jackson a lot. They are under Fender now. Kinda have the edgy, metal-god look to them and they are a decent axe. ...a bit pricey, though. They used to have one helluva cutsom shop. butcherNburn
OK you want an answer.. I'll step out on a limb and keep it short, sweet, and relativly cheep. jeremy c
To post a slightly more serious answer, He should probably start by looking at what kind of guitars are played by the bands that he likes. He'll probably find that there are a wide variety of brands and models used. Then he can go back to figuring out what he likes (and can afford). Free download of my cd!. _Sweet Willie_
Black is good, too. Black is loud. Black sounds best. Black'n'pointy and your buddy's good to go. Really, though, I'd try the Guitar Forum. Also, Jeremy's post about seeing what the guitarists in his favorite bands play and then seeing what he can afford makes sense, too. spreadluv Fanboy? Tom Capasso
You guys. What are you doing????? You're leaving it to Bob and myself to defend the fort against the coming onslaught. CMDN His Metalness will sweep us all away with his mighty PBass (cause you don't think he'd risk his Les Paul....). BigK - yeah - try the other forum. Lots of brands, lots of sounds, lots of "feels". One of the guys in BenLoy's band MrsGrundy plays a MusicMan Axiom, which I thought was a great cross between the stereotype "Fender" and "Gibson" sounds. It's not cheap... And Wraub - loved the "rust" comment. Tom www.stoneflyrocks.com Acoustic Color Be practical as well as generous in your ideals. Griffinator
LOL! Seriously, as a guitar and bass player, I'll tell you that for heavy stuff on a budget, the Schecter Diamond series units are very, very nice. doc taz
Enough fire for a barbecue Well, as long as my mind's on the subject, go take a look at some ESP LTD's or the Jacksons that run for about $300-700 or so. http://www.fender.com/new_repository/jackson_charvel/images/WRMG_Warrior_md.jpg Sweet Lord, I love this one! It's actually very comfortable to play, and the preamp boost is a nice touch, though this guitar sounds great with it off, especially when playing clean tones that would make your girlfriend/wife swoon with delight. The neck's got a great profile, too; not too thin, and not too beefy. ;} Speaking of flames... http://home.comcast.net/~jvram2/images/burnbabyburn.jpg The unfortunate victim's a Yamaha that has pictures of Ricky Martin, Britney Spears, and boy bands that have broken up in the last few years or so. Some dude sold it on eBay. After the sale, I stole it, and before burning it, I took the bridge humbucker, and the Floyd Rose. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
