I need a new browser home page.....

Recommended Posts

Isn't there a news web page somewhere that I can specify what interests I have to display when I open the page? I've used CNN as my browser's home page for the past 6 years or so. I look at it today and I've got the Yate's murder trial sitting there with descriptions of how the woman killed her children; a sheriff talking about the crematory debacle here in Georgia; anthrax found at an army base (which should be THE news, right? No?), news that Pakistan knows the identity of Pearl's killers, 3 people dead from a chopper crash in the Phillipines, just on and on - death and freak show news. I'm tired of it. I want "non freak show" news. But I still like CNN's science and computer news, amidst all the tertiary things... "?" Of course, I didn't find out that Bush Jr. gave a speech in Japan a few days ago where he basically said we've had a "lasting alliance with Japan for over 100 years", or that he massacred the value of the yen by accidentally saying "devaluation" instead of "inflation"... found that out from fark.com's links. Unless I find something better, I'm going to start the day looking at fark or maybe techtv.com.... I dunno. Suggestions?

Chip, I use Yahoo. It's not real pretty but can be customized so you can pretty much put on it what you want. News & Sports Headlines, no pics, Stockmarket, music. Take a peek at it. If you go that way, you'll set up a "my.yahoo.com" page & go from there.

I'll take a look, but that's... I dunno, too corporate or commercialized seeming. They condense their news from outside sources, right? Might be ok I suppose, I fear missing some sort of "important" global tidbit, but on the other hand - I'm tired of having to wade through the daily murder tally.

Chip, I agree with the suggestion of Google. For news, I have the following bookmarked. news.yahoo.com cnn.com csmonitor.com (a religious publication, but they do a great job of straight factual reporting with their editorial opinion clearly marked) latimes.com I only look at news once a day, on days I didn't already hear an NPR or BBC radio update or see any news on TV. Most news is reports about awful things happening to other people, or about people in power using violence to maintain their position. News headlines are chosen based on some very standardized criteria, like: "What will make people stop in their tracks and buy a paper? What is the latest word about what governments are doing? Who died in a spectacular manner? What large group of people is suffering?" These reports don't have much to do with my main questions: "What should I concentrate my attention on in order to have a happy life? What can I do today to make my world a better place? Are the some past-due obligations I have to take care of today? Can I find some conversations that would interest me and cheer me up?" When I gave up reading the paper front to back each day, I found a lot more time to handle these questions. If you use slashdot, sign up for a free account, and change your preferences to show level 5 posts only. this makes 90%+ of the crap disappear. However, you'll still get the worst-written, most biased headline summaries and articles on the Net. Slashdot would improve a thousand fold if readers could vote on the choice of articles to hit the home page, as well as on the responses to the articles.

Thanks all for the suggestions, I'm going to try Yahoo... if that doesn't work, I'm considering just liking to some F1 page and just tuning out "reality" altogether. Ironically CNN's page today isn't so bad, outside of the news of Chuck Jone's death; nothing like yesterday the guy killing the 4 year old with the claw hammer (again, here in... Georgia...?) just because he "needed to attack someone". Tired of hearing about that crap.
