Lee Flier
'77... I was 14, starting to play solo acoustic gigs (mostly folk-rock, country and blues stuff since I didn't yet have an electric - I would get one the following year) and getting my first band together at school. For my 14th birthday in March, I had received a new acoustic guitar to replace the piece of crap I'd had for the 2 years I'd been playing to that point. I still have that guitar! Everyone else was into Kiss, and wore these horrible pants called "Dittos" which were bell bottomed hip huggers in these ugly ass pastel colors, and they had these cords running right down the middle of each leg! Gawd those were ugly, I'm glad I had the sense not to wear them even though it made me very unpopular.

Lee, I don't know the pants you are talking about, but they sound kinda cool to me. But hey, what do I know? I was ten years old, and didn't care about that kind of stuff. I remember we all rode our bikes down to the drug store and bought those funky pocket combs, and everyone was sticking in their back pockets. So, I guess I was into combing my hair. I've got nothing against hip huggers or bell bottoms in general, but these were... different. They were this polyester type crap for one thing. The colors were horrible. And that cord thing that ran down the legs was in the FRONT... not on the sides where the seams are. Uggghhh. The thing is too, they were considered ultra-hip because only super skinny chicks could fit into them. So it was a big status thing if you could fit into Dittos. I was just the height of "weird" because I could have fit into them but would not have been caught dead wearing them! For awhile I went out of my way to wear regular Levi's and a beat up beret just to piss off the in crowd.

Jeff Klopmeyer
How about the late 70s/early 80s designer jean phase that came in right after that? Sassoon, Gloria Vanderbilt, Jordache, Sergio Valente. The resulting camel toes were pretty distracting for my junior high male mind. After that, girls went to the ankle-zipper Guess? jeans, and guys were wearing stone-washed and ripped Levis. Ah, the Eighties. I don't miss 'em. - Jeff Marketing Communications for MI/Pro Audio My solo music and stuff They Stole My Crayon
