East bound and down...

:D

Anyway, I took a cruise to Columbus to see if I could round up some fresh and cool jams. I hit Media

Play and Borders and managed to score some great stuff.

After about a seven hour listening marathon, I had to crash. So I only made it through about half of my score.

Here's what I picked up and listened to already...

Napalm Death- The Code is Red...Long Live The Code.

*Some more great stuff from the godfathers of grind. One of my absolute favorite bands, so they don't tend to do anything I don't like.

High On Fire- The Art Of Self Defense

*I already had it, but the re-issue has a killer Celtic Frost cover, so I had to have it.

Medeski Martin & Wood- friday afternoon in the universe

*Now this is some killer jams here. This passes the "hair standing on end" test. Thanks to Fritz The Nite Owl for turning me onto this. I will be seeking the rest of MMW's material.

Charles Earland- Black Drops

*The Mighty Burner is another Fritz tip that I have been getting way into. And Chrlie Earland is on the top of my "aquire every release" list.

Smokin' B3 that just feels good.

Jimmy Smith- The Sermon

*Need I say more? :D Thanks to the guys in the keyboard tree for the tip on more smooth B3 action. And it is smooth. :thu:

Eric B & Rakim- Follow The Leader

*After being turned onto this duo by San Andreas (yeah, the game), I picked up the 20th Century Masters best of and what can I say...gotta get it all.

Public Enemy- Fear Of A Black Planet

& It Takes A Nation Of Millions

*More scrounging through the history of hip-hop. Old news to most, still fresh to this die hard metalhead/thrasher.

---

Here's the stuff I haven't listened to yet (Still jamming on MMW)...

The Definitive Jimmy Smith

The Spanish Harlem Orchestra- Un Gran Dia En El Barrio

Charles Earland- Black Talk

Charles Earland Tribute Band- Keepers of the Flame

And last but not least...

Electronic Musician -May 2005

Sound On Sound- April 2005

EQ- April 2005

So what new smokin' stuff have you picked up lately? And any recommendations based on my selections would be greatly appreciated. :thu:

Well Stranger, its hard to match a spread of Napalm Death, Public Enema and Jimmy Smith :D , but here's my latest:

Coldplay A Rush of Blood to the Head It's been out awhile, but new to me, excellent.

Garbage Bleed Like Me

Pink Floyd Animals (can't believe I'm hearing this for the first time!)

311 Best of...

Jeff Lorber Flipside Jeff's recently joined us at the Keyboard Corner, cool!

Steve LeBlanc SLEB

Mars Volta France's Commute

Matt Biano Matt's Mood Basia's old band, whom she's rejoined, my current favorite!

Dave Mathews Band Stand Up So shoot me...

And Dream Theater's new DVD Live at Budokon is fantastic, those guys just keep getting faster, and that's fun to watch.

Haven't bought any special magazines lately, but I'm just finishing the book Younger Next Year, an interesting approach to exercise, diet and human connection extending the human life. Recommended.

I bought my wife the Scissor Sisters and the latest New Order. Pretty good. I never liked New Order the first time around but I get it now. I like it.

The Scissor Sisters sound like Elton if he had admited he was gay during the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road era. Splash a little gay disco on the Yellow Brick Road and you've got Scissor Sisters. They sound great BTW.

just got a newer cd from this swedish band KENT, I think its called Du & Jag Doden.....or something close to that. It is great! Those who enjoy coldplay, radiohead mixed with a little interpol/joy division type music should check it out....the only bummer is the singing is in swedish too. so good luck singing along.

Botch, what did you think of Bleed Like Me?? I haven't long been listening to Garbage but I like it a lot, heavier than the last couple...

Scissor Sisters I can't decide on. After their disco cover of Comfortably Numb I started researching hitmen but I couldn't afford the rates to take a contract out on them, but then heard Mary, Laura and a few others so listened to the rest of the disc, fairly evenly split between some damn good poppy rock songs and disco stuff, which I hate. Mary in particular is a great song tho :thu:

Yeah, I hear ya. The disco is allright though depending on the context. My wife plays it in her hair salon so it works out. ;)

Yup, heavier, a lot more guitars and less synth, but I still like it. :D The lyrics in the title track I thought were very impressive too.

Still jamming Medeski Martin & Wood. I think I'm hooked.

Anyway, I thought I'd stop back and leaf some interesting quotes from the issue of EQ I picked up.

Editor's reply: We have tried, repeatedly, to get the author of the tip, Mr. Les Claypool, to alter his position regarding narcotics placement in the signal chain.
Free your mind and bad recordings will follow.
I think Nick Blakey is overrated. And has obviously been losing too much business to every Joe Blow with a musicians friend catalog. :D

Whatever they were selling, we were buying.

And as luck would have it, it was something that actually stood a chance of being used for more than three minutes at a time.

Oh yes, the standard caveats: We didn't see everything, some of the following is utter fiction, and prices, features, and the very fabric of all space and time itself are all subject to change without notice.
Wow, truth in journalism. What a concept. Think Craig-O's writing style has been affected by his exposure to all this bullshit we manage to churn up around here? :D

SURFBOARD: As we peruse and cruise the inner recesses, nooks, and crannies of the web, we're constantly flagging sites, news items, and usueful tidbits that have almost nothing to do with porn, a-hem, and that we feel will be of interest to you.
Seems to be a running masturbation theme. Do audio engineers do more chicken choking than the average guy? (That's a rhetorical question.) :D
