Ivan May
I listen to a lot of really unknown or lesser known rock bands. One band I really think you'll like is Blodwyn Pig. Formed by founding member of Jethro Tull Mick Abrahams, who quit the band after their debut, This Was, in 1969, this band is pretty much guitar driven rock with some saxophone here and there. Mick plays a custom designed 7 string electric guitar, which he also uses for slide work and whatnot. This clip of Jethro Tull from the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus special actually shows a then unknown guitarist--Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi--miming to Mick's slide riffs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOUNjaMkcPs The saxophone player, Jack Lancaster is really impressive (his playing reminds me a lot of Ornette Coleman or an early Michael Brecker,) and as these clips from Beat Club show, Mick is a good guitarist, despite the poor camera and lighting work. And check out Mick Abrahams playing some bluesy riffs on his red Gibson SG, and the bassist playing a sunburst Fender Bass VI. Abrahams left Jethro Tull, due to a falling-out with Tull vocalist Ian Anderson, after their debut album, This Was, was released, and formed Blodwyn Pig with Jack Lancaster (saxophone and flute), Andy Pyle (bass guitar), and Ron Berg (drums). Ex-Yes and future Flash guitarist Peter Banks became one of several guitarists to succeed Abrahams after he left to form his own band for a time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lli5TN4Q_w0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1W1JkPKfWQ&pp=ygULYmxvZHd5biBwaWc%3D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqV-uBMPMzA&pp=ygULYmxvZHd5biBwaWc%3D I hope you guys enjoy their sound (particularly if you are a blues rock enthusiast and like Mick Abrahams lead guitar playing.)
Dannyalcatraz
Nice clip! So many good bands in that era never got the attention they deserved. 3 Quote Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a. Scott Fraser
I love Blodwyn Pig. I had "Ahead Rings Out" on 8 track cartridge. An important part of the soundtrack to my high school days in the late 60s. I really wish they had stuck around for several more albums, or decades. 2 Quote Scott Fraser
murphybridget
Blodwyn Pig definitely sounds like a band worth checking out, especially with Mick Abrahams' unique guitar style and background. Thanks for the recommendation!
