KooperKast

Recommended Posts

I discovered a new podcast called “KooperKast”. This podcast consists of short interviews with B3 legend, Al Kooper.

Among the many interesting discoveries that I’ve listened to so far, maybe the most surprising was when Al said that he has never had a B3 in his home studio because they are so large and heavy.

That is so hard to believe.

I once asked Al Kooper (who was doing a thing with Jimmy Vivino from Conan O'Brien at the time) how come Vivino never smiled when the camera was on him on Conan. Al replied, "If you had to play with Max Weinberg would you be smiling?"  Ouch!

Fun Al story that he told:  He drove into a gas station and filling up at another pump was Bill Withers ("Use Me"). As he drove past, he rolled down his window and shouted, "Bill, do you know? Do you know?"

Al got a B3 when he was in Blood Sweat and Tears that was provided by record company advance money. He made an agreement with the other band members that if a band member quits or the band folds they get to walk with their gear. Of course the band kept the B3 when Kooper left.

It's interesting when he recorded on like a Like a Rolling Stone with Dylan there was a C-3 under a tarp.  He actually got the parts backward or something and they ended up keeping the recording.

Just to clarify, the organ was not under a tarp. Paul Griffin was already playing it when he moved to piano for “Like a Rolling Stone”.

Here is the story as told by Al. Funny and amazing.

Here is the short episode about that session and Al’s comments on learning piano and the freedom of composing with synths.
