Apple Vision Pro - Who Wants One?

Recommended Posts

An interesting feature is the ability to create your own Vision Pro level content. You will be able to experience your snap shots in this VR form. That is significant. Imagine having pictures of your children at various stages in their life in this format to experience. Many people cherish their home movies and snap shots of family and friends who have passed away. Imagine having that in this VP format.

I can see how this would be useful to realty and luxury sales catering to the wealthy. A step preceding the trip out of town, state, country could be the VP walk-through. Down the road here there is a shop which refurbishes exotic cars. People from all over the world use them. They also have a museum and a consignment sales showroom. There was a time when you could rent a room for video conferencing at a place called Kinko's. A chain of facilities like that would increase access to the technology. I wonder whether these will eventually be available to try if not rent in a room at Apple stores.

As for exclusive content which "can't be done by Max, Netflix, etc." The format opens up creative possibilities. The price of admission will be a huge deterrent to potential audiences. A deterrent to filmmakers would be dooming their artwork to a small number of viewers.

Quentin Tarantino recently made a relevant point about streaming services producing their own movies. The content is not available to the majority of movie audiences. He said he makes movies for "the world." He is not interested in making a movie for a small audience. It is one more reason why he plans to stop making movies and is switching to writing books.

A consideration I have is how quickly things become inferior to advancements in technology. This is the intro. The M1 was overshadowed by 3 M2 models in a very short amount of time. A long standing philosophy has been to skip the odd numbered iterations in Apple technology. The M1 debut was significant. I anticipated Apple riding on that longer.

You could spend $3500 now and an improved model could be released in as soon as 1.5 to 2 years. That would hurt.

I guess this is all there is to it so looks quite portable.

I don't feel what's actually promised to work with this device. It's VR quick/accurate feedback, an integration effort to out the sensors and compute power inside the device, and quality cams and "stereo" display to boot.

That it sets high standards for technical characteristics is interesting, but probably won't be the end of all strive in this fiels, so dedicated cams will be better, high powered graphics cards faster, and being subjected to wireless signals and additional infra red wouldn't be my hobby..

Pretty much why we chose a three year lease on our electric car (Polestar).  The thing is basically a computer with wheels.  What they'll be selling in a few years should be way different feature-wise, and hopefully priced a biut better.

I realized a while ago that I could do a lot of my day to day work on an iPad. Other than development and studio stuff. If this gets to the point where I could really work on it, I could see losing a wall of monitors in my house. When I'm not using it, it simply goes in a drawer. Perhaps a real win for people who don't have a large workspace in their home.

In any event, this is a good watch:

I've seen some people comment on the part of the video where the guy is wearing Vision Pro and taking the image with the headset of the kids, but that seemed isolating. But I wonder, why would taking that image/video or whatever it's called be limited to the Vision Pro? Maybe it has a couple of cameras it's using to capture, but it's not like it needs 360° or even 180°. They're pretty close to a 2D plane. So I wonder if future iPhones and perhaps iPads could capture Vision Pro content as well. Vision Pro can already display a Panorama captured by iPhone to make you feel like you're there again. Imagine if anyone with an iPhone (post 14) could capture this content and send it to someone with a a Vision Pro, or of course use it themselves without using the Vision Pro to capture it.

It still looks steampunk-like to me, considering the price and starting claims of its virtues. That's natural, as rev 1 of anything comes with loose threads that get snipped over time. We've already seen "South Park" and other shows dive into the virtual porn thing. Hell, that was a major scene in 1983's "Brainstorm." A guy made a loop of an orgasm a pal had and just about killed the first person who took the player-helmet from his head. He was quite dried out by then, ahem. Speaking of the then-new video cameras, Zappa astutely pointed out that the first use to which anyone puts a new such technology is to take shots of their kids and video of themselves screwing. 🙄

For me to be wild for this, the CONTENT would have to justify it. 3-D is a borderline joke that's good only for its own sake, as with the animated Spider-Man movies. I view this new twist in terms of how it would help me use Logic and softsynths more comfortably. My bookie says to pass it by, 'cause I'll be under the dirt rather than above it long before it becomes more than halfway usable. I echo the view that $3500 will buy you one heck of a potent Mac.

Probably, if they put two cameras on it that were far enough apart to capture the depth. The current "max" models seem long enough to give you that distance, if you put the cameras at each end.

MKBHD's review mentioned this aspect of the Vision Pro as disturbing... thinking about how the subjects being filmed would be looking at an alien-like creature with that device on their face! Having stereoscopic filming on an iPhone actually makes a ton more sense if you think about it - who isn't used to having a phone filming?

That is trendy knee-jerk hyperbole like everyone can't wait to call something "creepy."

How did you feel with an 8mm movie or an early generation VHS video camera pointed at you when you were a kid?

One of the earliest memories I have is when my older sister tipped the couch back and knocked over a floor lamp. The shade came off. When the lamp was restored upright I looked at the broken bulb and it looked to me like a cracked open human head. It scared the heck out of me.

But there are hours of random home movies and snap shots taken including me or when I was nearby and I do not recall ever being bothered by grown-ups holding cameras over their faces and focusing on me or my siblings.

Goggles? Nowadays kids are wearing helmets when they ride bikes and skateboard. The Apple design is not that different from ski goggles. It is far from utilitarian like a welder's face shield or the protective glasses worn while working in the garage with a table saw or working on a car.

If you are that sensitive to something on a face you are probably going to be at least a little bothered by someone holding a cell phone out towards you with attention on you, especially one large enough to have the space between lenses to capture the depth.

The primary use is not for taking video.

right now, the most intriguing thing about it is having three 100” screens positioned anywhere I want them in the room, any time I want them. And the Mac screen whenever I look at it.

In a scenario like the three 100" screens, I wonder whether the haptics will be true to positioning honoring virtual location in relation to your virtual position. If so you would hear everything as though it was a physical object in space. I gather the audio aspect is accomplished. The goggles sense your eye activity and respond to what you are looking at. Gestures are sensed. Without a glove how would you feel a response like a vibration or single vibe?

One thing about the whole computer package is that everything is a simulation and there is degree of disconnection. I use a once analog device that has switched over to digital for a few generations. We are too far removed now but in the early days of the transition we could go back and use the analog as a last resort. It was refreshing to have that immediate response. It really emphasized the impact the latency has on productivity. Even a split second throws off your sense of efficiency. Unfortunately the delays are typically more than a split second and with every added feature it adds to a list of delays. If they were all equal you could be in sync and maybe even anticipate time to do something while waiting. But no one can dance to asynchronous beats.

Every physical object around you ist still there in  Vision.

your mixer can still be right where it was, your hardware, keyboard, mouse, and pianos. You see them just as you would if you weren’t wearing the device.

the difference is that you can have a massive display sitting in the air above the console, right between your speakers, and another two hanging in mid air in front of the right and left speakers.

and they don’t move, even when you turn your head.

I might have mischaracterized what he said in his review – he never said "alien-like" to describe the person filming. On second listen, it seems he found it more weird than "creepy" - listen for yourself, it's a minute or so after the spot I'm linking to here, where he mentions how cool it would be to watch an NBA game in 3D. The whole review is worth a listen, imo.

[EDIT - OK I see this same video was linked to a few posts above by John Worthington! Sorry for the double, though I'm linking to a specific point in order to respond to o0Ampy0o.]
