Pedal boards for kb players?

Recommended Posts

Looking for a nice clean way to organize my keyboard pedals (controller, sustains, Leslie speed switch). Does anyone have any suggestions that have worked for them? I find the guitar pedal boards to have a little more height than I would prefer.

Perhaps my home-made system could give you an idea. It is really flat and capable of holding several pedals. In fact I have lately added an expression one. And, trust me, it does not move! 😆

Here you have the link to my post about it:

BTW, as it is not clear in the pictures, the white plastic support has a couple indents where it meets the legs of the Spider Pro, so it keeps on place also laterally.

Sheet of plywood. Velcro. Here's my previous pedalboard.

The trick to a tidy rig is to run all (yes all) cables down to the pedalboard and back up. Use snakes, or loom wrap, to bundle cables together. And have all connections between your rig and the outside world plug into the pedalboard.

I used a Warwick Rockboard (at the left of my pedalboard) to act as a patchbay.

Here's a picture of my rig wearing its "clean look":

I've tried a couple of approaches, from wood and velcro, to a padded case.  I've come full circle and now just carry pedals separately.  Depending on the gig, my pedal needs change so much, it became a hassle.  The worst part...even with a board, pedal creep was still a problem!

I actually had trouble finding a taller one because I really wanted to mount the wall warts for my Key Largo and two monitor mixers (which one I use depends on the main mixer).  I ended up getting a Donner.

My actual pedals I just set down in front of this, under my stand, but I've been thinking of getting a second  much flatter "thing" to mount them on.

Pedal creep - I bring an area rug (3x5 iirc)--looks cool, provides a bit of cushion for the dogs, and the pedals don't move.  Some stages already have carpet so I don't always use it but I have it in the car.

Yes, to be fair, mine still do...just not as much.  Having the actual pedalboard (mixerboard really) under there kind of stops them from going too far.   I considered some kind of "backstop" that attached to my stand legs that would keep them in place.  Problem is I use a couple different stands.  Maybe a smaller rug with the back edge under that heavy pedalboard (which does not easily move), then the pedals velcro'd onto that small rug which would extend out toward me.  I've found the small outdoor carpets from Lowes work pretty well with velcro, I may give this a shot.

If I might ask, did you build a box/lid or have a bag for transport?  I try to make sure everything fits in my main....toolbox (that's what it is)....and my pedalboard's bag fits barely into it.  Anything that can't is at high risk for being left at home or at a gig...for example my mic boom, before I had a boom attachment on my stand I kept leaving the stand at home.   That pedalboard looks great and I might do something like that.

You might throw all those functions at the most supported pedalboard I've seen which is very sturdy:

Or combine functions with a smaller, equally flexible:

But it sounds like you might just need a good travel enclosure for what you already have.

You might adapt one of these:

Even when I bring a carpet, or there's one at the venue, those buggers run away from me.  Maybe I have a heavy foot.  My solution is a good supply of gaffer tape.

My solution was to bring a 6x4 foot rubber bottomed building entry mat, which is under both me and my keyboard stack(s).  Pedals are affixed to a flat plastic panel, and the panel has coarse sandpaper on its underside -- it goes nowhere relative to the rug, and the rug goes nowhere relative to me.

This is what I use.  Apparently this is no longer available.  Surely there are others like this.  These do not run.  Some weight is good.  Just lift the lid and go.
