RABid
My favorite guitarist. Wired and Live were two of my favorite albums. He taught me to play expressively and not just hit notes. 1 Quote This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page
Anderton
Hendrix was explosive, but Beck was incandescent. He squeezed more emotion out of his guitar than just about anyone. No one lives forever, but he left a helluva body of work that will endure, at the very least among those who want to know what heights guitar playing can attain. 1 Quote Craig Anderton Educational site: http://www.craiganderton.org Music: http://www.youtube.com/thecraiganderton Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/craig_anderton

Notes_Norton
IMO the all-time most technically proficient rock guitarist. He did things on the guitar that mere mortals only dream about. Nowarezman
My tic-list of guitar player common foibles: 1. same damn blues licks day after day after year after decade, etc etc etc 2. showing off speed just to show off speed 3. first album not that different from 21st album 4. complex and technically difficult material signifying nothing 5. little to no regard for what's been going on in other genres - a narrow schtick. 6. Derived from previously derivative material from prior players It's the rare guitar player that doesn't commit at least three out of the six. IMHO, Jeff Beck committed none of them. Rare among the rare. nat
Ivan May
Jeff Beck may be gone, but the Truth album he made with Rod Stewart lives on. Had to give it a few listens this morning… And the best part about Jeff Beck is that no one in particular tried to imitate his guitar solos. That is original. Notes_Norton
If you haven't seen Jeff Beck, Live at Ronnie Scotts, I highly recommend that you do. The camera team must have been guitarists, because they almost always focus on the correct hand when Jeff was doing some super-human feat on the guitar, while making it look easy, and if you weren't looking, you wouldn't hear the technical ability, just the melody. 16251
The Orange album, Blow by Blow and Wired was my heyday listening to JB. I then moved to a deep dived into straight ahead jazz while I was playing Top40, 3-6 Xs a wk, living in hotels. His passing has affected me more than any other music genius'. I have been watching many YT and reading about him. I wish I could of been Max Middleton, playing with JB and hanging out with him. He was about music and not about glam. Then I read about his hot rod enthusiasm and American Graffiti, which was my favorite movie during my teens and it makes me more sad especially since I never saw him live. Anderton
When someone of Beck's stature dies, I try to focus on how fortunate we were to have him around in the first place. 78 years is a good run, and he left behind a great body of work. In everything I've seen of him, he played with confidence. The lack of same might be why some players don't reach the same kind of artistic heights. 2 Quote Craig Anderton Educational site: http://www.craiganderton.org Music: http://www.youtube.com/thecraiganderton Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/craig_anderton

I've seen some interview videos of him as well, and he didn't act like a rock star, just a polite, understated person. He let his guitar do the talking for him. Frankly, when I see an obituary I get a little jealous - no more problems, no more health issues, no more getting screwed over, no more standing by while the world deteriorates. I know that's probably not the right attitude LOL, but it does make mortality look not quite as bad as people paint it. Just not quite ready for the part where you have to walk from here to there. This being a case where the trip is not all about the journey, but the destination. And I don't subscribe to the point of view that after death there is nothing. There is never nothing. I won't be surprised if there are still tax returns in the hereafter. nat

When I see an obituary, I think to myself, "I am a survivor." I like to put a positive spin on things if I can. I don't know what will happen when I die, happy hunting grounds or just endless nothing, and I'm not in a hurry to find out. This life is the proverbial bird in the hand. When it happens, it'll happen, but until then, I'm going to have a good time. Plus, I'm not going to do anything stupid like hang gliding or eat donuts until I'm obese. David Emm
1 hour ago, Notes_Norton said: Plus, I'm not going to do anything stupid like hang gliding or eat donuts until I'm obese. Hear hear! I have a precious few bits of plastic pop kitsch among my books. One is the Simpsons scene where Homer is strapped to a machine in Hell, run by a demon as it crams donuts into his mouth at a fast pace..... and he just keeps saying "More!" until the demon gets bored. A pal told me of a cousin who was living in a similar fashion, except with Oreos. He'd watch ball games, snarf those down and feed them to his poor dog, too. Its downright abusive. No dog is going to turn down an Oreo, or 50 Oreos. Naturally, the critter ballooned up & eventually exploded. I'd say that leaves a stain on your karma, sheesh. Notes_Norton
I don't have a dog, but I've read that you shouldn't feed them chocolate, as it can kill them. I don't have pets at all (except my wife) because as musicians, and lovers of travel, we think it's cruel to leave a pet alone for an extended period of time. We gig at an outdoor place where dogs are allowed, so we simply enjoy other people's pups. I've never been one to do daredevil stunts. On the other hand, I don't refuse to go out of the house either. There is a sweet spot between living dangerous and simply existing instead of living, and for each of us that sweet spot is different. I found mine and I'm happy with it. I get my thrills gigging, traveling, and playing with my wife.
