ani
I myself get more than a little tired of Thoroughly Modern Millies- most of us are a lot more vulnerable than we ever let on. Lots of the best people just get chewed up and spit out. Ted, Perhaps it is just that, the chewed up and spit out, that has given some of us the drive to become successful enough to claim our independence. Mats Olsson.
Ani, I'm not married. I do often work with my ex though and we are still good friends. PS I'm still afraid of mushrooms. http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later!
ani
Hmmmm, mushrooms don't really go with fish dishes anyway, and I "know" you like fish. How about garlic, fruits (all types), veggies (all types), and nuts (pecans, english walnuts, and cashews)???? Back on topic.... I have always wondered if the customary habits of men in America differ from those of men in foreign lands. Also, the same goes with the expectations of women by men in foreign lands. When I studied German back in high school, I remember my female instructor talking briefly about cultural differences between Germans and Americans. She also said that in different countries abroad the ratio of men to women differed quite drastically from what it is here in America. From her standpoint, she felt that men of other countries (mostly European), where women were not as prominent, treated their women much better than those here in the states. Although, considering differences from foreign lands abroad in general, from what I've learned about muslim countries; I would not want to be a woman in their land. I'm curious as to whether the authors of these books have ever traveled abroad and taken different customs and cultures into consideration prior to making their assumptions on the differences between male and female brains. Dan South
This kind of book relies on gross oversimplifications and laughable generalizations. Sure there are men and women who fit into some "typical" idea of personality, but even then, with every person there is a lot of individuality. And there are lots and lots of people who DON'T fit the accepted "standard" patterns. I already know why I think what I think and what my motivations are. Thanks anyway! Understand where you're coming from Dan. As far as the stuff being a generalisation, Gurian is up front that it obviously doesn't mean everyone apply to everyone the same way. What he does assert though is that there are some areas of difference between male and female brains (i.e. men have a smaller corpus collosum, larger amygdala etc)that are worth being aware of when negotiating relationships between the sexes. I'm the first to be sceptical of this sort of stuff but find the scientific basis he has used to be very insightful. ani
Nursers, I read the excerpts provided on the link for the sale of the book that you supplied. The author was basing his analysis on the studies of a female subject versus a male subject to build his case. I did not see where these studies had involved multiple females from different nationalities that showed similar patterns of brain activities, while studies of multiple males from different nationalities revealed opposing patterns to the females although similar to each other. As Dan said, brain patterns differ from one person to the next whether it be female or male has no bearing on the fact unless hundreds of subjects have been evaluated and certain traits are appear to be common in one or the other sex, but not at all in the opposing sex. nursers
Well, when I say his stuff is based on science, I mean from research involving hundreds if not thousands of subjects. There is no doubt culture plays a very significant role (as does socialisation): that's not his point. The point is that some traits are based on our hard wiring. It's the old nature versus nuture debate, and Gurian comes down somewhere in the middle. That's an inherently sensible position compared to the alternatives: that the brain is a blank slate at birth, or that everything we do is hard wired in. ani
I totally agree that women and men have different hard wiring; both in physical structure and internal structure. I mean, PMS should be a dead give away that women have different cycles than what men do.
John Sayers
One thing I do know that's different is the way the eyes work. Males have a narrow direct sight for seeing detail at distance, whereas women have a wider peripheral view. So when a guy is walking down the street and sees a good looking lady he will look straight ahead a quickly glance sideways when he thinks he's past her, but because of her wider sight she sees it;) cheers john Studio Design Forum Studios Under Construction Home Page
ani
John, That's just because men are blatantly obvious about galking at a hot woman. Trust me, women look too; we're just more discreet about it. edited for typo error
