Road Map to "Hey Jude", the lyrics

Recommended Posts

Interesting...

Ā

Never saw song lyrics presented this way before...

Ā

It's one heck of a roundabout on the "Na" part.

Incorrect, the loopback arrow to the first line should not start at "na" but earlier. Engineer here

Peter Jackson's "Let It Be" on Disney+ documents the Beatles' often tortured songwriting process beginning in January 1969. Hey Jude was was written about 6 months earlier so one can infer a similar process.

Ā

During the writing, Mal Evans serves as note taker for any lyrics which come tumbling out of the Fab Four but particularly out of Lennon and McCartney. McCartney has some almost complete lyrics, but sometimes there are just good sounding phrases which need to be sequenced. Sequencing the phrases is often a subject of intense discussion between Paul and John and you can tell they take each other seriously. It's a partnership. Often the debate over the sequencing of phrases is to intentionally clarify or obscure meaning, Paul typically Ā takes the linear side and John frequently introduces non-linearity or multiple meanings to add texture to the song. This skeleton structure of Hey Jude illustrates the importance of phrases and the sequencing of phrases. Wonderful!! Thank you.Ā šŸ‘Ā šŸ‘

It seems like it could be a pretty useful way to remember the verse order of songs that were consistently structured. I always had trouble remembering the verse order of When a Man Loves a Woman, and A Whiter Shade of Pale for example.

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

If you really want to have FUN with that great song -- search for the 3rd & 4th verses which didn't make it onto the single/album/radio!

Ā

Glad to see some folks here thought this was interesting...

I found the lyrics including those extra verses. It's funny, but I distinctly remember hearing the "you must be the mermaid who took Neptune for a ride" verse often back in the sixties. I'm pretty sure it was in regular rotation on the FM stations around Boston back in those days. Still a great song either way.

Ā

"A Whiter Shade Of Pale"
Ā

We skipped the light fandango
turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
but the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
as the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
the waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
as the miller told his tale
that her face, at first just ghostly,
turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, 'There is no reason
and the truth is plain to see.'
But I wandered through my playing cards
and would not let her be
one of sixteen vestal virgins
who were leaving for the coast
and although my eyes were open
they might have just as well've been closed
She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
though in truth we were at sea
so I took her by the looking glass
and forced her to agree
saying, 'You must be the mermaid
who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
that my anger straightway died
If music be the food of love
then laughter is its queen
and likewise if behind is in front
then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
and attacked the ocean bed

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.
