New to SSS? Welcome to the Party!

Recommended Posts

If you're new to SSS, first of all, welcome to the community! Craig Anderton's Sound, Studio, and Stage first appeared in 1995 on AOL, and became part of Musicplayer.com in 2000. We have a really good crew of people here who can answer just about any question you might have, as well as provide everything from A to Z (specifically, Amusement to Zen-like wisdom). There are only a few very simple protocols that you need to know.

1. Do not post specifically to sell things. Giving things away is fine. Use common sense; members are merciless to someone who has one or two posts and starts a thread called "Here's a link to my band's new song, I'm the world's greatest guitarist, please give me some feedback." HOWEVER, PLEASE NOTE: Feel free to include this sort of information in your signature. Also, we do give some veteran community members a little slack, so once you've been here for a while and you find out your band is opening for Green Day or something, feel free to share the good news :)

2. No politics or religion, please. There is an exception for politics that affects us directly as musicians, such as copyright law revisions, what is or is not fair use, and the like. I have been fairly lenient in the thread about Live Performance in the Age of Covid, because politics has been so entwined with the pandemic. However, that lenience is fading fast. In the words of Darth Vader, "I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further."

Other than that, SSS is an open mic forum that's not dedicated to a specific instrument of topic. We have lots of comments on popular culture, movies, tech trends, the music industry, music production, and much more. (Football fans: Note Dave Bryce's most excellent forum, Keyboard Corner, encourages football discussions.)

So what is SSS? I liken it to a virtual party, and I'm the host. You're all invited to come and have a great time. Each thread is like a group of people going off and having a discussion. Be courteous to your fellow partygoers...drink as much as you'd like (there's a virtual open bar), but please don't barf on the carpet or you'll be politely but firmly escorted to a virtual Uber or Lyft. Finally, the pool and hot tub are open 24 hours - just go past the cabanas, and turn left. Please remember: no glass by the pool, and kindly put the towels in the hamper when done.

Now enjoy! -- Craig Anderton

Welcome! I'm one of those guests that showed up to the party around 1995 and never left.

Which is particularly appreciated, now that you're a world-renowned night photographer, companion to the stars, and bon vivant. :) As well as a nice guy.

One of the highlights of these forums is meeting people in person, and Ken, I hope to see you again sooner rather than later.

I just noticed my post about WH getting cat was moved to SSS. Great!  I'm totally fine and I discovered SSS and bookmarked it. I can see <hindsight> that it could lead to ppl unintentionally saying the wrong thing. My non-stop comedic mind thinks this story is funny only because of the history of the WH, not because who is occupying it.

SSS isn't dedicated to a specific instrument or topic, so it's kind of an "open mic" situation where nothing is off-topic (of course, unless it violates forum protocols).

I'd recommend that those posting OT topics in instrument- or topic-specific forums do so here, because the topics won't be OT in SSS. Welcome!

And who is R_King? that's not me!

Drop me a PM - happy to modify your account, if you need help.

I'm back!  I checked in this morning as R_King.  I don't remember why I set up a 2nd account with that name many years ago.  What a mess!  My original and correct account shows I joined in 2001 but had a very obsolete email address.  Thanks to Dave for fixing it all up for me. 👍

Hi Craig,

Quick question.

If I have a song, a religious song, can I post the song?  A "live recording" video.

For example, "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman", or "Our Father Who Art in Heaven"?

These are extreme examples, but they are songs.

There are also a lot of country singers with christian message in their songs?

The reason I am asking is that I compose christian songs.

As long as there is no discussion to be had, is it ok?

Thanks.

Rene

Hello Rene,

This isn't really a place for posting music, there are so many other sites on the web for that (like YouTube). Some do post their music here from time to time, but that's usually something only long-time members do, and often to illustrate a particular point about production, composition, etc. People often do post other people's music, to turn other SSSers on to something cool.

Another issue is that this site stays away from religion and politics. There are very rare exceptions, like there's a thread about Ukraine going on because it affects everyone, including musicians. I must say the discussion has been civil and informative, which I would expect from the visitors here, and that's why it's still here and hasn't been deleted.

The best approach seems to be when people have a site where they post their music (YouTube, Bandcamp, whatever). Then you can post a sample of what you do (like "Don't Get Around Much Anymore"), let people know you exist, and if they like it, they'll come back.

Finally, it's important to remember that EVERYONE here makes music. If everyone posted music, the site would lose its focus as a place for discussion. However. I used to have a thread called "Is Your Music Any Good? Find Out Here" where people could post their music, and get critiques. Maybe I'll resurrect that at some point.

It took me this long to sign up here? WTf! LOL. Hi Craig.

Welcome aboard, Mark! Start some topics, do your thing, and most importantly, have fun! All we ask is no glass in the area of the hot tub, and please put used towels in the hamper. Thanks!

Hi everyone.  I went by Super 8 on the old Music Player and later at Harmony.  Then life and child-rearing put music on the back burner for awhile, but I'm back!   It's nice to see many familiar names on this forum.  I expect old bulletin board-style forums like these are quieter and see less traffic with the advent of social media, but that's fine with me because I've had it up to here with social media.  Glad to see this forum is back in action.

Welcome back! Yes, social media has its uses, but so do forums. They continue to exist because they provide something social media doesn't, and musicplayer.com is having quite the growth spurt these days as people either discover or re-discover it. Participation is what makes forums thrive, so...participate!

Your Super 8 account still exists and is active.  We can get you credentials/refresh data to light that one up if you'd like.  I can merge it with this one effortlessly, too.  Your call entirely. 😎

While you folks were over on AOL, I was moderating the MIDI Chatroom on Compuserve with Frank Wells and KK Proffit....think it was around 1992 or 3, when the Earth was still cooling. I went by the handle Algorhythm back then. After several years in Europe and a product management stint with Tascam, I started Get It In Writing in 2002. I'm far from quiet and reserved in the real world (as anyone who knows me will confirm), though I try to be a bit more reserved online....emphasis on "try."
