Been wondering where you, uh, been, SG...figured maybe deep into it w/yer new gtr.

Sorry to hear you've had this news to bring.

Been a fan of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole for a while; didn't really know much of Cyril.

Thanks for reminding me of what can be learned.

I guess there's less for me to catch up on now. :(

Here's some of what I've been missing

This one reminds me of Leo Kottke w/it's 12 string sound & quirky phrasing

A primer on his style

If I had ever heard of the guy, I might feel real bad. But since(it seems) he was a family friend, my condolences go out to you AND his surviving loved ones.

I'm usually sadder to hear of this sort of thing around any holiday. Especially one that's mostly celebrated with the gathering of family. :(

I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

  • 2 weeks later...

NYT finally published Pahinui's obit today written by mainstream mus critic/reviewer Jon Pareles & mostly drawn from cyrilpahinui.com.

To offer some brief details abt Pahanui that I hadn't seen before:

Slack key playing (kiho'alu) was apparently a response to the 19th C. importation of Mexican cowboys as workers.

There are 20 or more diff tunings in use.

More interestingly, Pahinui was not just a skilled player & singer, he was a dedicated educator of students both private & at U of Hawaii & elsewhere including the Hawaiian Masters Youth Outreach & Community Reinvestment Program.

Accepting the First People's Fund 2K13 Community Spirit Award he has this to say:

"I will continue to share, teaching what I know. The young will someday have to carry it on."
