Winston Psmith
Looking for a modern Phaser, something compact, but not a RI of a classic. If I wanted an old-school Phaser, I'd get a nice RI Phase 90, no question, one of the hand-wired Custom Shop models. IMHO, that is an iconic sound, and still the sound I think of when I think Phase Shifter, however, I'm looking for something new, and more versatile, if not outright bizarre. I've been considering the Keeley BubbleTron and the Earthquaker Grand Orbiter, but not committed to either one. The SubDecay Starlight Flanger is also in the running: no, it's not a Phaser, but I like it. They're all right around $200US, and all right around the same footprint for my pedalboard, so that should give you an idea what I'm looking for. There must be something I haven't thought of, probably lots of things. So, what's in your wallet . . . I mean, pedalboard? "Monsters are real, and Ghosts are real too. Dannyalcatraz
I have the Starlight, and it is as advertised. The Keeley and the EQD are likewise good pedals- have neither, want both. The discontinued Keeley Phase 24 is a great classic phaser, soooo...good kit, but not what youre looking for. Their Jimi Hazel EchoPhase, OTOH, you might find tickles your fancy. Caevan O’Shite
The Alexander Pedals La Calavera Phaser should do nicely. It's small, but extremely versatile, with some unusual, perhaps unique, features that will bring you all manner of phaser-filtered flares that will sweep you through the 21st Century. I want one... ________ [video:youtube] If you can find one, a VFE Tractor Beam or Enterprise Phaser, also small pedals, would likely serve you well. (The final iteration of the Enterprise and its successor, the Tractor, beam are really the same pedal, with different names and graphics.) I have one of the very last Enterprise Phasers made, and it's a very, very versatile and lovely phaser. (These two pedals are actually the same size) __ ____ http://vfepedals.com/images/tractor_beam_300x500.png Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do? ~ Caevan James-Michael Miller-O'Shite ~ _ ___ _ Leprechaun, Esquire _ ___ _
Scott Fraser
An oldie from the 70s that always sounded 21st century to me was the Mutron BiPhase. I'm sure somebody is making clones of those, in smaller packages. Scott Fraser
Winston Psmith
@Scott - Great sound, big footprint. Lots of RI versions of Mike Beigel's infamous Auto-Filter, and I think someone has copied the Octiver (his original mis-spelling, IIRC) complete with Green Ringer, but not much else? @Dannyalcatraz - Named for JMH and Eddie Hazel, I take it? @Caevan - This demo video has the same problem I find with most Phaser & Filter demos, a trebly, warbling sound that's emphasized by using Guitars with SC's. Right now, the Starlight is leading, BubbleTron is second, Grand Orbiter is falling way behind. There is a Subdecay Phaser that looks interesting, much along the lines of the Starlight Flanger - Subdecay Quasar Phaser. There's a small shop, not too far from me, that carries Subdecay, so it might be worthwhile to drive out there, and do an A/B comparison. "Monsters are real, and Ghosts are real too. Dannyalcatraz
Jimi Hazel, indeed! (In fact, thats his demo vid.) If the Starlight Phaser is as good as their flanger, its something we ALL need to know about. Keep us updated! Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a. Winston Psmith
I have the Starlight, and it is as advertised. Quick thought - Do you have the current Starlight, or the discontinued Starlight DLX? "Monsters are real, and Ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win." Winston Psmith
@Dannyalcatraz - That's the one I've been looking at. The Chase Bliss Spectre looks interesting, but the price is more than interesting. Maybe if I saw a nice used one for $200, I'd jump, but not at $300-350. There is a Demo model online, for $262, but that's still just above what I want to spend. All good, I'm not in a hurry, just looking to see what's out there. Dannyalcatraz
The Spectre is a hell of a piece of kit. The price is the ONLY thing keeping me from buying one...and THAT will only keep me away for so long. Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a. Winston Psmith
+1 - That pedal that costs more than any Guitar I've bought in the last year. It may be well worth the $$$, I'm just not there, yet. "Monsters are real, and Ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win."
