Hey, Where's The Moderator?!? Answer: 10,000 Posts a Month

Recommended Posts

I've been seeing the posts about the political forum, SSS, avatars, blah blah blah. And the question is, why can't somebody do something about this -- like me, because I'm the moderator?

Well, do the math: On October 24th, SSS hit 250,000 posts. Today, we're past 300,000 posts, NOT including the political forum.

That's over 10,000 POSTS A MONTH ON THIS FORUM ALONE.

That's roughly 2,500 posts a week. 350 a day.

I write for EQ, Keyboard, and other magazines. Travel and give seminars. Raise my daughter. Take care of my family. Attend trade shows. And a whole lot more no one here is aware of.

I could spend all my time moderating and never contribute anything, never answer a question. Or I can just do the best I can with the time I have. And that's what I've decided to do.

Moderating the political forum is a losing proposition. Take away one thread, and that creates 10 more that need to be dealt with. At least with the current structure, it's a lot easier to moderate this forum.

And of course, the successful attempts at moderation aren't really seen, so the assumption is nothing happened...

Unless someone can give me 100 hours in a day, this is the way it is in SSS-land. In some ways, it's a victim of its own success.

Finally, I'd like to thank the "posse" of people who email me about problems so I can focus in on those, y'all save me a bunch of time!

Funny you should should mention this...

I was wondering if Keyboard was going to be changed to Anderton Mag. Seems like everything I read in there is you! :D

'The Law of Internet Forums' states that they all start out cool and turn to shit. I've moved from forum to forum over the years and they all turn to shit. I think Murphy has something to do with it.

:D

Besides, who needs moderation when you can have anarchy? Hundreds of people who have nothing better to do than to exercise their opinions on things nobody really cares about?

'The Law of Internet Forums' also states that a forum that starts out informative will turn into group of regulars who like to engage in mental masturbation. :D

Welcome to the 3rd grade. I might as well be at work.

Well, I'd disagree when it comes to SSS. I think there is still a lot of cool stuff happening here. It's just that it seems things turn to crap because let's say a forum starts out and you have 50 cool posts a day. Years later, you still have the 50 cool posts a day...but they're swimming in a sea of hundreds of posts .

And every now and then, something happens to change SSS, like breaking out the political forum. I like to keep some level of change, too bad I don't have more time....

Craig, as far as I'm concerned, you're superhuman! :D

I realize that some of these complaints we're voiced in answer to a thread that I created in order to discover the reason for the huge outcry over a gay pornographic avatar compared to the minimal outcry over other pictures (violent and gory ones, for example).

I regret if this in any way caused you to feel unappreciated. We're very lucky to have you here, and you have my most sincere thanks for all of the time you find to contribute! :thu:

Best,

Geoff

Craig, I hope I didn't piss you off with anything I posted. I certainly didn't mean to do that, or to criticize you in any way.

I don't expect YOU to moderate that Political forum trainwreck; in fact, I was surprised when I saw your name as moderator of that forum. Personally, I'm glad you don't waste your time over there; I'd rather see you spend your time writing cool articles for EQ than see you moderating the Poli forum.

Perhaps Dendy could eliminate the image-posting capability at the Political forum, since images aren't really necessary when debating politics.

I dunno, it's just a suggestion. It would eliminate the problem that caused this little uproar, at least.

Anyway, I apologize again if I irritated you, Craig. I seem to be rubbing you the wrong way lately, and I really don't mean to be doing that. My apologies.

For what it's worth Bunny, I took your comments as support for my disgust over having been tricked into viewing a gory picture of an aborted fetus. I imagine that you would agree with me that the member who created the thread and posted the picture is solely responsible for its content. Only once a moderator is made aware of something like this and then lets it stand does that moderator share any responsibility, and I never made Craig aware of this.

I'm getting a little off-topic now, but I'd like to add that I don't necessarily view the posting of the aborted fetus photo as a black and white issue. That's why I asked others how they felt. I realize that people who are passionate about something often feel that the end justifies the means, and they act accordingly. If posting that picture allowed him to release his anger, I'd rather he did that than bomb an abortion clinic.

Anyway, you and Craig are both good guys in my book. :thu:

Best,

Geoff

Why just the political forum? I saw the WORST pic I have ever looked at on this board in the Guitar forum. It was of a person in a tub shitting up in the air and it was landing on their own face.I about puked on the floor. My point is that its not just one certain forum.

Craig,

You need some Deputy Post Nukers, folks who can either delete an offensive post or render it invisible until you can review it. If an offender gets a bunch of posts nuked, you and the other Mods can step in and take action. But in the meantime, you can live your life without worrying about the forum every minute.

How about some of the folks with new forums? They don't have as many posts to read as you do. Maybe they can be SSS Deputy Moderators. Strength in numbers. It's too much stress for one guy to watch over this bustling eSpace.

The Black Knight always triumphs!

Lessee now: 10,000 posts per month. 334 daily. 15 per hour... c'mon man, you can't edit a post every 4 minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? :D

People were upset at all of the political mud at the SSS, so they made a political forum. Since that time, the SSS has returned to normal and all of the conversations seem nice and pleasant.

NOW, people are upset at the political forum. If you dont like the political forum, dont go there, simple as that.

The naked avatar issue does not apply to this, the porno on this forum needs to stop.

You are hereby ordered to cease and desist from all abusive, and annoying types of behaviour!

This means you

Pursuant to Acticle 14, Subsection 12 of the MusicPlayer Code of Honor, all members are given fair notice to subordinate, their insubordinate attitudes to subsequent suborning. Furthermore it is in consideration of the trifling cacaphony of apocryphal imitation of social intercourse that has erupted here, that these rules are at this time reinstated.

So it is written let it be done.

No apologies are necessary, any frustration you (or Geoff) sense in my posts is due to the lack of time in my life, not the posts you guys have made. In some ways I feel like the forums are going faster than I can keep up, but then again, so is everything else :(

I gotta tell you, life is both complex and difficult for me these days and the juggling act just gets harder. This forum is actually amazingly self-policing, and I'm grateful for that. So I let the problems slide as they more or less take care of themselves, and prefer instead to contribute comments when I can.

As to the political forum, it really would require a tremendous amount of effort to moderate properly. As it's a spinoff of this, not the main attraction, that's simply not possible.

That's why it's so helpful when someone emails me or Dendy about a problem, because I do check emails a lot.

In my opinion, things often go in waves. SSS has been running strong for about ten years, and like anything else, has been cyclical. Sometimes are more anarchic than others, but it's always been insightful. I've been posting here for 10 years, and the quality of the forum has had a lot to do with the members and of course, the moderator.
