Searching for Gibson solid - light weight, ebony fretboard

Bartholomew

Recommended Posts

Want something approx 8 pounds with a Sixties Slim Taper neck like my 74 LP Custom - also must have humbuckers. Can't get ebony fretboard models in Canada...except don't really want an Angus SG unless I have no other choice.

Trying to find a chambered Studio - I believe they make a white model with an Ebony fretboard but it has the Fifties neck profile.

Have an appointment in Montreal to see a 1990 LP Studio - may have a bit thicker neck than I want but is $850 with good frets and a Gibson case. Can't lose as I need the Gibson case anyways but it probably weighs 10 pounds. Is swiss-cheesed rather than chambered but has that ebony fretboard.

Any suggestions ?

Been round the block but am not over the hill...

MY white Studio has the ebony board, and a slim neck for a LP. It weighs less than my ash Strat or ash Tele. I've found most other LP necks to be fatter and less playable. It's become my go to guitar, at least with the Mesa, cuz I can't get a bad sound out of it. It's a 2006.

Exactly what I wanted. Looks pretty good - I'll take one...

Have no choice but to order, not play it first. Problem appears to be a shortage caused by Gibson's legal situation related to wood.

Certain countries just aren't getting shipped various items.

Caev - I already have a 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom with SD pick-ups - want to reduce weight - it gets even heavier by the 3rd set and I'm feeling it the next day.

Welcome to "Old-Fart-Ville" - at least I'm out there doin it again.

The various LP Studio models that have ebony fretboards tend to be really nice. Those '90s Studios with ebony 'boards have a good rep.

FWIW, neither of those models that I had suggested previously are "LP Customs"- rather, they're specific versions of the "LP Classic"-line, that share a few of the Custom visual cues without really goin' full-on tux. They have humbuckers, ebony 'boards, and the '60 Slim-Taper neck-profile. Weights vary.

Must have gone by me - never see those in this area.

Yeah, Google 'em, 'Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom', and 'Gibson Les Paul Classic Celebrity Custom'. Most "Classic" models have the "'60 Slim Taper" neck-profile, and these two models also have ebony fretboards, sporting simpler binding and pearloid traps instead of the MOP blocks usually found on LP Customs.

NIIIICE!

Ah knewed ya 'd like 'em, Blue Sape! :D

That one you posted a pic of is sweet, too, though!

I'd actually be happier with MY Les Paul Classic (you've seen it) if it had the fatter '59 or even '58 style neck-profile, as long as it had big, fat '59/'60 LP (or even the rounder PRS) style frets on it. The '60 Slim-Taper profile feels really nice at first and in general, but I'm more prone to muscle-cramps in my fretting-hand after long periods of playing due to the thumb having less neck between it and the rest of my hand, as opposed to the fatter necks...

Love that white & black.

I have really small hands and also like the Fifties neck but seem to play better on the 60s slim taper with ebony.

Have an Epi SG400 faded with a neck like a baseball bat.

If you can find and afford a used or even new U.S. Masters Hornet, snag it and run. GREAT necks, very stable and stiff, ESPECIALLY for a slim SG stylee. I played a few of these, and came real close to pulling the trigger on an SG-like Hornet with the "Maple-Core" set-neck (quarter-sawn maple inside, mahogany outside).

"...the maple runs from the end of the neck joint, all the way up through the headstock. Look closely at the video and see how the headstock angle hardly changes on the MapleCore neck, but almost completely flattens on the non-MapleCore neck. You still get the big, warm low end associated with set-necks, but improve on the mids, highs and attack."

Ooo that Gibson Les Paul Classic Celebrity Custom is mighty fine, and I'm not even a Gibby fan! The only thing I'd want different is lose the gold stuff, Lefty not a fan o' gold 'less it's jinglin' in me pocket lads. I can see why you right handers (I guess that makes me a wronghander?) like these non-Carvin instruments, the bound-neck is sweet and I do like their inlays. Sweet. Rumor has it they sound nice too.

Here's a really cool article on Les Paul Classic Premium Plus models, like my '96 "1960" LPCPP:

Have to say that's real interesting regarding the SG neck bend, never liked that about them. Mine stays in tune even though I can bend the neck and it sounds like a tremolo bar.

I really liked the neck on the U.S. Masters Hornet that I played...

Caev... Probably add to this thread if yer wanted tuh shows us a pic of yours please. I did say please.

Aw, shucks! Same ol' pic...

BIG picture of my '96 LP CPP

 Y' know... that pic of that USA Model LPCPP in Cherryburst in that article- possibly a pre-sale/Gibson or retailer photo- DOES look a LOT like mine... ?

While I love Bluesape's white & gold beauty, something about this one:

...just screams "guitar in a tuxedo!" to me. Somehow, it captures formality & rebellion in one.

Thanks Caev, I've seen it before of course but one can never have too much guitar-porn. Puuuuurdy!!

:D Heehheehheehh... ! Yeah, I lucked out. Sometimes at practices or gigs I just stare at it on its stand, occasionally even pointing it out to others, asking with a grin, "man, ain't that a beaut'?" :thu::cool: I had an absolute buzz from it the moment I first picked it up, played it, laughed and announced, "THIS one ain't gonna be played by ANYONE ELSE in this store EVER AGAIN... it's goin' home to live with ME!" :D:thu::cool:
