You little bastard. My heart started racing when I saw the title of your thread. Then, as it was loading, I fired up another browser tab with Macrumours.com on it. Hmm, nothing about a new Macpro. I scanned down quickly. Nothing new that I have seen since last time I checked. Maybe I missed something? Then I see the picture.

Hey Menno.

I can't complain. I've had a couple 'gig of a lifetime' moments this year so far which is really gratifying. Still having to hustle harder than ever for work though. You know how that is.

Where you at these days? Did you pull the trigger on a MPB?

Yeah, I read about your gig with the Padres. Big up, mon! I'm now in the Netherlands and should be back out there permanently by the end of this year. I'm holding out on the MBP until I get stateside, they're too dang expensive in Europe!

Everything be cheaper round here. Cool, we'll I'll probably cross paths with you when you make it back out.

I am still up in the air over whether I get a MBP or a MP. Until I have the money it's a useless debate anyway.

We'll see what happens when I wake up tomorrow morning.

Nuttin'much, as it turns out. iMac update and the magic trackpad. Nice, I guess.

Wow, glad they made the MacPro announcement at the same time as the iMac update. It's a no-brainer for sure, given the limitations of the entry-level MacPro and how the 27" iMac can now be ordered with both a hard drive and an SSD, for maximum performance when working with sample libraries (Kontakt, Vienne Instruments, etc.).

I'll be ordering my maxed-out iMac as soon as I can figure out how to avoid it without going the financing route. Glad I held out this long. The MacPro announcement is an astonishing disappointment, whereas the iMac update is an unexpectedly pleasant surprise out of left field.

I understand where you are coming from, but don't see what more Apple could have done. Apart from reducing prices, of course.

Well....

I'm glad they finally updated it. I don't know how I feel. I think that if I had bought a system months ago ala Linwood, I wouldn't be the slightest bit piqued about this update as it adds very little except faster processors / more cores.

I do wish they were a bit cheaper. Their $200 more on the base model for very modest gains on processor power doesn't seem to be justified. Inflation hasn't been that much. So I don't know.

Still can't afford one right now anyway. Still would buy an iMac but for the lack of expandability. So I may still go MBP. Or last year's Macpro. Dunno.

I'm still lovin' the 2.66 8 core and don't feel like I've gotta have one of the new macpros, but....I'll prolly grab a new imac for grins and give my Grandson my "last year's" model this fall.

Wasn't there some hub bub about the life of SSDs? One thing for a standard hard disk to die after 2 or 3 years, but quite another for your $1,000 SSD to do so.

That was indeed the case last year. That they peter out after 10,000 write cycles. But I had family in the industry saying that that should be taken care of by now.

In any case, I doubt Apple would offer them as system drives if durability was still an issue.

HERE is an article from Anandtech and an excerpt discussing the lifespan of intel MLC SSDs:

OEMs wanted assurances that a user could write 20GB of data per day to these drives and still have them last, guaranteed, for five years. Intel had no problems with that. Intel went one step further and delivered 5x what the OEMs requested. Thus Intel will guarantee that you can write 100GB of data to one of its MLC SSDs every day, for the next five years, and your data will remain intact. Given the 100GB per day x 5 year lifespan of Intel's MLC SSDs, there's no cause for concern from a data reliability perspective for the desktop/notebook usage case.

KLONK for pricing on intel SSDs.

My Power Mac died recently and i was able to find a used 2008 octopro at a great price. Couldn't be happier with it.
