Official NBA 2008-2009 Thread

My only negative I came away with is, the Lakers REALLY need to get a different spokesman for the team, especially on a National stage, other than Joey Buss. In his short meanderings, he came across has an arrested development, golden-spoon 30 something that showed little respect for the tradition of the game and especially the rich Boston Celtic legacy. It hurt a little more with Bill Russell and Kareem standing in foreground looking on. They must have been thinking, this idiot is the future owner?! Yikes. It cheapens the organization to let someone like that open his mouth.

I was thinking the same thing, that was an awkward moment for sure

Lakers will sign both Ariza and Odom.

That might not be easy as it sounds. The desire is there to sign both... Here's hoping it works out.

They will be back Jeff, I promise.

I guarantee a Los Angeles Lakers Championship for the 2008-2009 NBA season.

I'm actually hoping the Lake beats the Celtics on Christmas day. It'll keep them overconfident and sleepy until June.

Sleepy after celebrating their championship all night.

And I'm not impressed with what I see from the Lake.

Farmar should be starting - that kid has the touch, and he's fearless. Fisher sucks. Straight up.

LOL!!! Good one.

Boo hoo. That's what happens when the celtics play against a good team for a change.

Go Lakers!!!

Congrats to the Lakers on winning the 2009 title last night.

Thanks!!! :thu::thu:

The East will produce a champion for the second straight year this year. Whether that champion will be Boston, Cleveland, or Orlando, I'm not sure yet.

No matter who it is, the Lakers will be on the receiving end, and Kobe will be crying for a trade in the offseason.

Another winning prediction by the Nostranator.

Quite a game by LeBron tonight.

Again.

The guy is amazing. A total freak of nature. And now he has a good, solid team with him.

Yep, and they're going to bring a professional sports title to Cleveland for, if I recall correctly, the first time ever.

Wow, you weren't even able to recall correctly for the first time ever!!!

Apparently, you don't recall so good.

p.s. The Cleveland Browns, from Cleveland, won the NFL title in 1964, defeating the Baltimore Colts.

b, I love when you quote yourself that you predicted the Lakers would win. I mean, when have you not? :P

Congratulations to the Lakers. They did it, and I there aren't any asterisks. In the finals, they turned it on and kept it on.

Orlando proved they can play with anyone but lack the consistency of focus and, really, lack a reliable, coherent half court offense. Even if they had won 2 or 4, Lakers would have exerted themselves in the end.

As for who's up and coming in the West to challenge the Lakers...

Can Joe's Rockets get healthy for a full season? If so...a team that took the Lakers seven without their two superstars should be able to do a little better with them. They've got a great coach there. They've got a cast of hard nosed role players that is positively Spurs-like.

Can NO get back on track? They could become a legit contender in a hurry, with a just of couple of lineup changes. I am not necessarily sold on David West as a second-best player, though.

Can "my" Spurs acquire another player and stay healthy for a nostalgiac run? I like to think they can.

Congrats to the Lakers on winning the championship. They certainly played the last series as if they wanted it more.

In other news, there is preliminary talk of Shaq going to the Cavs. They aren't wasting any time in ramping up.

Shaq to Cavs seems like a really strong possibility. The remaining question is whether Shaq is really what the LeBrons need right now.

Even on the decline, Shaq would be a huge (no pun intended) addition to the Cavs.

If the Cavs focus on getting the Diesel, Anderson Varejao can really forget about making $10M per season in Cleveland.

Jeff, you just had to remind me of the impending realities of turning 4-0...God willing. :D:cool:

It's really not that bad, Prof. It was much less traumatic for me than turning 30, as I recall with my dwindling powers of recollection. :D

I'll tell you one thing -- back to topic -- I can't imagine the focus, power, and natural gifts it would take for a pro athlete in any sport, much less basketball, to be playing at my age. Hats off to the few guys who've done it.

Further back on topic, it is ridiculous that sports fans would rather spend a night in the can rather than going home on the high of their team winning a championship.

I never claimed to understand the concept of rioting when your team wins. I think it's really just a bad combination of alcohol and testosterone, combined with nothing better to do. See, I have Keyboard Corner as an outlet for my gloating.

I have heard it said that Shaq was "surprisingly spry" in Phoneix this season. Still, I am not sure he puts the Cavs over the top, 'cause it is so hard to know what you're going to get from him. When he's on the floor he gives you, if nothing else, a big target in the paint who can finish--but he also forces you into a Shaq offense. I guess with Z they're pretty used to having trailers...

It was nice to see a championship team show some class at the end of the game, as opposed to dumping Gatorade onto the court. But I guess when you've won the title recently and know you'll be winning it again soon, you don't need to act like you've never been in that situation and never will again.

On a side note, I hope the problem with Grif's internet connection get's resolved soon. So far he hasn't been able to get his congratulatory posts up.

It looks like his last post was June 13, 2009 10:29 AM, so we know the outage occured after that...

To me, that presents a real problem when your one current winning tactic is a 1-on-5 offense. You think teams can't double-team LeBron while still covering Shaq inside? Maybe Shaq circa 2001, but it's not nearly as big an issue with Shaq 2010.

And love Shaq. I think he's great. He's just getting old, and next year will be older.

I wasn't sure that putting Shaq on the Suns was a good idea, but he eventually had a real renaissance in Phoenix. It happened too late to do the Suns much good, but Shaq had his best season in years -- having a career high and leading the NBA in field goal percentage, and having almost a career high in free throw percentage.

But yeah, he's not getting any younger -- this is a limited time rejuvenation.

Best,

Geoff
