mdrs Posted December 1, 2006 Share Posted December 1, 2006 I know our regional director of sales at Martin, and was lucky enough to be on a private tour of the factory that he took a few of us on a couple of years ago. They were building the first of the D-50 Koa models, and they were incredible. I don't think I've ever seen wood that beautiful, and lovely abalone inlay that was "ostentatious without being gaudy"!! It was love at first sight.....until I saw the price...50 G's....wow. I have a hard time even thinking about spending that kind of coin on a new guitar. Certain vintage axes are certainly worth that much, and much more. But, they have a TRACK RECORD of value over many many years. You just never really know what will happen to the value of a new guitar. So, in spite of being a big time Martin fan, and a world class Guitaraholic, I didn't even consider purchasing one. Let me know. Christmas is a crazy time for me, as I travel to Maryland many weekends between now and the new year. But, perhaps we can get together. I need some fingerstyle lessions!! I'd take the Martin Factory tour if you can. The Martin Factory is an amazing place. Great guitars, great people, great wood! They have a new museum that just opened this summer. I haven't had a chance to see it, but it's supposed to be worth the visit. The tour is a must, if you can. Also, you should stop in and visit Nazareth Music; http://www.nazarethmusic.com/ They have a fantastic selection of Martin guitars in stock. It's the best place to actually play many many different Martins anywhere! Their Martin room is one of my favorite places in the world!! They will make you wear a smock, and will watch you while you play. At first I didn't like that. But, if you ever buy a Martin there, you know it's been properly cared for! Take a minute and look at the "detailed views". The inlay on the fretboard and pickguard is too much for my taste. But do look at the inlay on the back of the guitar. But yeah, the best bit were the reviews, for those that missed it the first time 'round, the page was full of reviews saying things like "the good thing about this guitar is that it doesn't matter if the kids leave it out in the backyard over night!" Scott Fraser Posted December 3, 2006 Share Posted December 3, 2006 Strange that Martin would name their $50,000 axe a D50, since in some circles the D50 is a $1,000-ish Guild model, & in other circles it's a seminal Roland digital-analog hybrid synth which is largely responsible for bringing the dreaded shakuhachi sample to the public. Gotta say that much inlay just looks ridiculous to me. Not posh, just insanely rococo, like a lot of that poofy Louis IV type furniture.
