  1. Hey Myles: Do you know if that trick of connecting a cd player to an amp, and run it really loud does work for "breaking in" a speaker? Should I put the amp/cab in a closet w/ blankets? ...is there danger of having the speaker not be able to breath? You know, will it not have its own waves whipping back at it? It's specifically for a 1x12 open-back combo. Thanks in advance... PS: Just ordered some JJ 803s and EL84's from Doug, specifically thinking of this combo. I'll let you know how things sound.
  2. The KT66 is about 10mA higher in output (if it is a proper KT66) than a spec 6L6. You can use them in just about any 6L6 amp, just rebias. The JJ 803S can be used in any 12AX7 spot with no worries. It is a long plate tube and I like it a lot in phase inverter positions. 65amps uses that tube a lot in first gain / tone stage positions. In the end it is personal taste and preference. Thanks a gazillion!
  3. Hello, Myles, just wondering: 6L6's + KT66's: are they entirely swappable or does it depend on the amp's circuit. I know some amps simply don't have the space for KT66's. Are there other issues? Also, is there a place in the preamp I should avoid putting that JJ803S? Thanks
  4. Nevermind...apparently the tube sockets are too close so the wider bottles (KT66) won't fit. Someone else who owns the same amp just told me the same. Thanks anyway!
  5. Hello, Myles... do you have any opinions regarding the sonic properties of KT66's vs. 6L6's and EL34's? Are KT66 in the same family as 6L6? I have an amp that accepts both 6L6's and EL34's and was wondering: can you just put KT66's there and have it rebiased? Can I make generalizations in terms of what sonic differences I should expect? I currently have EL34's in the amp but was thinking of switching to 6L6's.
  6. You Really Got Me is by The Kinks, so I wouldn't even count that. Most of their songs are very musically simple (simple does not necessarily equal easy)--what makes them hard to play is what Eddie chooses to play as fills, solos, and his phrasing.
  7. I think you have enough very good amps in the above list. It is going to boil down to your own personal taste and budget. As far as from Jazz to EVH ... none of those amps are going to come close to doing that sort of range .... no amp out there will. Quite true, but maybe I should have been a little more clearer, I'm asking if any of those amps will be able to reach those levels of gain whilst increasing the volume, like going from 3 on the dial (jazz) to 10 (EVH). so let me rephrase my question: which has the highest gain character? The amp that will have the highest gain on one side and the most clean tones on the other is not listed ... it is the Dr. Z Galaxie. http://www.drzamps.com/galaxie.html a-ha! I've been looking at this thing--reading reviews, etc--for the last couple days. Looks very interesting! Thanks for the recommendation!

It's really too bad your friend has to walk around with a spelling mistake for the rest of his life . If anyone is thinking about getting a new tattoo with words, please bring a spellchecker (not all tattoo artists are spelling bees). I didn't even notice that - "Life's toShort" Uh-oh. This space is too small for two o's

+1 Affordable rebellion. Sometimes I think too many people think they are soooo cool just b/c the have tats. Here I met 2 chicks from my GF's school dept. I can't stand who are into this "you're cool/you suck" teenager mentality (both from "image capital of the world"--LA!) , even though they're either 25 or older. The most annoying one moved away (thank the heavens, what a spoiled self-absorved brat) and the other one I rarely ever see, but as soon as I saw the title I thought about them...in my book, they're people I'd rather not interact with... NOT very smart, pre-packaged, pre-programmed chicks, etc. but the point is they think they're so cool 'cuz they're Rn'R girls w/ tats. Woo-hoo! Hilarious.

I think exactly what you typed. For ME, it isn't worth it. For others, whatever. So, I have a love/whateverish relationship w/ them. On the one side I THEORETICALLY like them, but at the same time (I think it has do do w/ the fact now I'm 30), sometimes I kinda have a hard time taking people who have them seriously (and I'd say 1/2 my "real" friends have them) precisely b/c of what you typed... especially since many of the people I know have them don't really extra dough to spend on crap, but in the end anyone does whatever they want w/ whatever money they got and their body, hence my "whatever" attitude towards them. It's like people who spend too much money on high-fashion, same thing... like spending hundreds just for the sake of cultivating an IMAGE. But then again, maybe for them it's really important to have symbols on their bodies that represent their aesthetic ideas or their ideas about life, etc.
  11. Myles: I know you love Hermida's Zendrive, but I wanted to ask you: have you ever tried a Menatone Howie pedal? I have the Zendrive and love it, too, but I was just curious about the Menatone. Thanks!
  12. It was a GT 12 AX7-M. Got it. The Zendrive sounds pretty good through this head. I should probably go ahead and find out what each of these tubes do. I know the fx loop is "tube-buffered" or whatever the term is.
  13. Hello, Myles-- How's everything? I have an 80's Fender Twin Reverb II and its clean channel sounds really soft and volume doesn't seem to change when I crank it up. Almost no sound at all. Distortion channel seems to be working right, though. I guess it's a bad tube, but this thing has like 7 preamp tubes! Do you happen to know and/or can guess which is the clean channel tube? Tomorrow (Saturday) morning I don't have that much time to experiment swapping tubes. It'd be better if I knew which one it was and swap it right away! By the way, I just received a certain OD pedal w/ a ying-yang symbol on the control plate.
