  1. I was a little surprised by the weight of the Y73 compared to the Electro 6D 73 SW...it felt much heavier. Probably due to the better keybed.
  2. Is the new action we're talking about here akin to the one in Casio's Grand Hybrid stuff? Because that was a pretty good action, let down only by the samples 🙂 Looks like they're going after the P515 market and they've got me interested. I like the styling very much, including the stand, but it all depends on the action - if it beats the P515 I'm in.
  3. The addition of AN-X would be interesting and worth considering a new purchase. I think people asking for the YC organ emulation are looking for the moon on a stick. Yamaha aren't going to cannibalise sales of their stage piano line by doing that.
  4. I'm really hoping Yamaha have a successor to the P515 in the offing, utlising the same principle of taking the action from a CLP Clavinova and putting it in a slab. The P515's NWX action was in their CLP645 which is now pretty old and has long since been superseded. I don't know if it's physically possible to get one of the newer 745 etc range's actions into a slab, but Yamaha would have another winner on their hands if they did. On the other hand, the P515 has surely been one of their best sellers, so perhaps they'll hold onto that golden goose...
  5. Yes, I did that so it was set to the Studio rotary. A/B ing with my Nord I think I worked out what the issue was. It was a lack of 'presence'...the Nord sounded much more 'in your face', almost like it was recorded more 'closely' if you like...hard to explain. Using the YC's Master EQ really did help equalise that though (although since it's global you then have to remember to turn it off for other patches)
  6. True but the Nord library is added to so rarely, it's hardly the 'agony of choice'...
  7. Big fan of MODX 7 too, and as I understand it MODX has been one of Yamaha's biggest sellers so quite surprising to hear this. I think adding a YC organ would definitely cannibalise sales so i'd be surprised if they did that. FWIW I tried a YC 73 today with a view to replacing Nord Electro 6 73...but actually found the organ, even with the update, not quite as good.
  8. I would think you'd want to check out the Yamaha YC73 here, which has great organ (after the update), piano and EPs etc AND a decent palette of synth sounds, with pitch bend/mod sticks which the Nord doesn't have. Depending on how deep you need you synth to go, this one board might do it all for you. It also has excellent integration with Ipad if you want to add soft synths. Personally I own an Electro 6 73 as bottom board (for piano/organ etc) and the MODX7 on top. It's a great combo. However, while the the Electro's synth/sample playback capabilites are limited and there's no pitch bend/mod, I do find a lot of the patches very useful. The Prophet A1 pad is as good as anything on the MODX. And via the Nord sound library I added ProjectSAM's Symphobia strings which are similarly as good as anything on the MODX, if not better. There's also a basic but welcome attack/release knob for the synth as well as a rudimentary velocity-controlled filter (so with the above Prophet sample, play soft and it's dark, hit it hard and it brightens up considerably). All this helps elevate it to above a mere 'sample player', if not quite a full-blown synth.
  9. One thing I've not heard mentioned is how the YC fares in mono compared to Nord, which has a dedicated 'Mono' button that optimises the sound for mono summing. It's really quite effective.
  10. Great replies, thanks guys! I'll find some way of pointing out that the floor is mine for those choruses!
  11. Does anyone do this song as per the live Pulse version of the 90s, with the Jon Carin/Richard Wright emulation of the original orchestral parts (which were not used on those Floyd tours, although I think Gilmour has gone back to them recently)? They get huge synth/brass sounds from their Kurzweils in those (much slower) verses which I'm struggling to replicate on my MODX/Nord Electro 6 combo. Any tips on how they got those sounds? Conversely in the "There is no pain..." chorus the synth string part sounds rather thin, although it cuts through nicely. At the moment I'm using orcehstral strings, but my guitarist complains that it sounds muddy and clashes with him EQ-wise! I suspect this is his way of saying "Could you turn down so I can be even louder?"
  12. I'm in the UK where jazz just doesn't carry that same weight and try as I might I have never been able to get into it, to the extent I can barely even hack most of those Nord posts on social media. I can appreciate the musicianship of course, but I'd just say never try to force anything musically. You are what you are and you like what you like, life's too short.
  13. Hello, sorry if this has been answered already but is the CFX sample in the YC the same as in the MODX or more akin to the CP series? I couldn't get on with the MODX piano live but I do have a Yamaha P515 (from which the CP is derived) so if it's more like that it's good news.
