  1. Hi seems that like go get this board, best thing you can do, borrow it from somewhere or buy it with a good return policy and try it for 2 weeks to see if it matches your needs. Ah, there's one thing that might be important, processing of received sysex messages is a bit slow (i have no comparison to other boards if this is 'normal'), e.g. let's take the overdrive 'knob' on the CTRLR panel: if you do a fast sweep (on the panel), turning it from zero to full, the panel sends a bulk of 127 sysex-messages (values 0-127) to the VR. The sysex are kept in the VR buffer and the VR starts to 'process' them, but this processing is so slow, that there will be a delay of ~1 second (dunno exactly) until the overdrive effect will reach its maximum value.
  2. Hi, - every 'knob', slider, menu option (with exception of the keyboard-split button) of the VR sends and receives (fixed) SysEx-messages - when the VR is running in 'tonewheel organ mode', each of the 9 (2x9 in split mode) drawbar-sliders sends/receives a SysEx, BUT with value range being limited to 0 to 8. - when the VR is running in 'instrument mode', four (of the 9) drawbar-sliders send/receive SysEx with a value range from -63 to 64 (the other 5 sliders are silent) to control VSTs you can use the VR as a 'muted' keyboard and theoretically assign any knob/slider to any VST parameter. Using built-in SysEx-to-CC conversion of the VSThost or external software like BOME midi translator you are able to build 'conversion sets' to match the VR-sysex signals to e.g. the CC-signals of a (set of) VST-plugins. BUT you'll never have the flexibility of a real midi controller. Example: to switch sounds you can match (built-in conversion or BOME) the 'Program-Change-SysEx' of a VR-sound, e.g. 'Grand Piano' to a corresponding VST-sound, but pushing the Grand-Piano-button on the VR will e.g. also send a 'hall'-sysEx, and if the 'hall-knob' already has been matched to a, lets say, LFO-frequency of a VST-synth, things will start to get funny The the VR is fully midi controllable but is clearly not build as a midi controller. If you want a 'stand-alone/solo instrument' that is also capable of controlling a bit of VST (e.g. I connect the VR - drawbars, leslie/overdrive knobs etc - to the virtual tonewheel VST "VB3" and send the VST sound back to the VR-audio-in - which transforms the VR into the world best B3-clone ) or just play VST notes while using the laptop monitor for controls, the VR will do the job. But as a full controller, I'd say no. Note: the VR keybed has no aftertouch !
  3. try Ctrlr-5.4.29.exe (as recommended in the install instructions for the editor)
  4. hello Dreamchilde, which version of CTRLR did you install? Franky
  5. the idea of the looper (loading an audio file or recording your own rhythm on the drum pad sets) is a gread idea OR download a 3/4 on net: http://midieditor.sourceforge.net/index.php?category=intro + use a simple midi editor like this: http://midieditor.sourceforge.net/index.php?category=intro to delete the 'instrument channels' in the midi file. a video howto use the editor: OR use the midi-editor to compose our own basic 3/4 pattern in 5 minutes or spend more time to compose en entire drum track with variations, breaks etc. OR playing the drumsets of the VR09 and record a 3/4-pattern as midi-file (see VR manual), then use the midi-editor to replicate the pattern to create a ... 10 min. 'song' OR use a rhythm tool like this : http://mididrum.en.softonic.com OR... use a more sophisticated midi editor like (free) Anvil studio with a dedicated 'rhythm track composer'
  6. Here we are, EDITOR v1.12(7) released what's new: - EDITOR registration independent from VR-Keyboard, where you can save deep-synth patches without overwriting the original VR-sounds - SYNTHESIZER: (Roland SH-01 Gaia clone) : improved optics, partials multi-select - Hammond style 2nd drawbar set + presets - hopefully less bugs than in v1.126 - for other changes see README and Docu in zip-download file download: ctrlr.org/roland-vr09-vr730-v-combo-editor http://ctrlr.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/VComboEditor_syn.gif
  7. you cannot install on the VR, but play a midi rhythm file (search www) on the usb-stick
  8. thanks for the nice words, it's my pleasure. as for the laptop, I deny any responsibility for lethal hard attacks caused by Microsoft products No, I'm joking, since Win7 the MS-OS is very very usable (this from a unix adept...) A convertible/2-1 like the Windows Surface with separable screen and keyboard can be used as tablet on top of a instrument. There are a lot of models in every price and performance range, e.g. I'm using a low spec HP-X2 (that was originally bought for motorcycle journeys https://forums.musicplayer.com/images/icons/default/grin.gif) , for the VR editor it's ok but for displaying notes the screen size is - - small. The Germans gave a tip named Chuwi HI13 with a hi res 13.5" screen.
  9. you can control (nearly) everything with sysEx. Also from VST. take a look here: this is all with sysEx: ctrlr.org/roland-vr09-vr730-v-combo-editor. BTW the Editor app also runs as VST. Announcements EDITOR feature update v.1127 (soon to come): "GAIA + Hammond + quality" - Hammond style 2nd drawbar set + registrations - Synthesizer: BIG upgrade: the synthesizer (surprise surprise - defacto a Roland SH-01 Gaia) gets its own registration (128x8 banks + 6 favorites), so no need to overwrite the build-in VR-sounds any more - quality : I think v1126 was so lala , v1127 will be fully tested http://ctrlr.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/previewSYNv127s.gif http://ctrlr.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/previewORGv127s.gif
  10. could you explain more in detail what you'd expect from the midi implementation? Use cases?
  11. http://www.rrr.de/~franky/upload/ostereis.jpg With a minor delay : EDITOR v1.12(6) feature update http://ctrlr.org/roland-vr09-vr730-v-combo-editor + new colour design + master fine tune + midi-reset/reconnect + D-BEAM + damper and expression pedal setting for UPG-registrations + registration list text export + lots of bugfixes and (internal) improvements + tutorials in html (a bit nicer than the old hard core ascii)
  12. the VR only saves a .dat file when: - you apply 'deep synthesis' (SYNTHESIZER on ipad or Editor) to a sound - then save this sound to a registration - then save the registration set to usb. As long as you do no 'deep synthesis', the VR does not save a .dat file. To get a .dat file of the 'firmware' registrations, reset the VR (master reset), select a registration with 'synthesiable' sound (the red arrows point to the SEL-buttons), then change one SYNTH-parameter, save the registration, then save the whole registration set to usb. There should now be a dat-file. Delete it. Change the SYNTH-parameter back, save this registation again and the whole registration set to usb. A new dat-file should be there, this time with the 'original' firmware settings. Please do not ask me to decrypt the .dat file
  13. Hi Nils, unfortunately it does not work. Just tried to add some General-Midi Sustain/Hold to the bass, sustain has no effect and hold switches the note to endless yeah, this is already on the 'maybe on day' list It's not complicated but very time consuming as we have to completely decrypt the binary UPG-file: change VR controllers one by one, save the registration, export it to the upg-file, switch the usb-stick to the pc, compare which byte or - very annoying - combination of bytes has changed :: da capo :: - - - that's what we did to get the registration- and soundnames but this was 10 out of 100(?) controllers
  14. Hi Tom, a german guy had the same faulty behaviour but we have no idea why. Anyway the actual beta test seems to be ok: http://ctrlr.org/?ddownload=83155
  15. Servus > Has the VR09 to be connected to the PC to load and edit UPG files? no > stored on my PC but nothing happens when I click on 'Load UPG File'. Strange! a popup-window should open with a classical file browser. Which Windows version do you use? > Is there a manual available for your fabulous editor? yeah, a text-file for the real hard guys. It's included in zip package of the 'official' releases. But there are video tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5kZc3eZtenfkwcAC15siDg
  16. Hi folks for update v1.12(6) I made a colour variant, here's a test version: http://ctrlr.org/?ddownload=83065 (this is still v1.12(6) beta!) what's your impression: better/worse than the brown/orange surface?
  17. Hi, done so. I sent you a private message at ctrlr.org with the download link for a prerelease version for approval
  18. Hello @ Nils: tested it but it does not work, SysEx "02 0k 02 00 00 01 VINTAGE ORGAN SET" is not recognized. @ all : there's a new release v1.12(6) in the making which adds: UPG-Editor: change damper and expression pedal assignments for each registration and save to upg-file UPG-Editor: show all sounds (patches) for avselected registration D-BEAM conrol Master fine tune ANY WISHES ???
  19. V1.12(5) important hotfix upate for upg-editor (under certain circumstances, erase could delete multiple registrations) + feature update: all four upper manual voices are now parallel http://ctrlr.org/roland-vr09-vr730-v-combo-editor
  20. Servus voila the tutorial to setup the 'midi loopback' to play the GM sounds of the VR. At 7:00 three minutes of GM synth sounds - oldschool but 'interesting' to see which princess the VR is to be awaken [video:youtube]
  21. Hi David, thank you for the flowers (jaja, that's german.. ), indeed the kolossal chaos in my upg-files starts to decrease significantly I really appreciate your feedback as this could be important for other potential Mac users (we only avec win and ios at home ) Have fun
  22. ahhh I see, the french would say 'là vous tombez bien' - that kind of mapper is essential for using the V-Combo editor in "GM2" mode ... For hardware boxes, you have to google/ask for midi router, translator, mapper, patchbay etc e.g Midi Solutions "MIDI Event Processors": http://midisolutions.com/Figure16.jpg map a note on/off from one channel to another. By adding serveral 'rules', CH4 => CH1, CH4 => CH6 etc, you can multiplex the messages. if you can accept a software solution (windows laptop, Ipad etc) the simplest setup is standard midi-usb cable: https://www.thomann.de/de/thomann_midi_usb_1x1.htm plug one midi connector to your organ, the other into the VR and the USB to the PC/tablet, the latter running a midi router/mapper software. The PC receives the note signals from your organ, the software router maps/multiplexes the signals to different channels and sends them to the out which is connected to the VR. The best free software (performant + robust) is: ChopperLan : an amazing piece of 'component connector', super simple initial setup and then works for eternity. TransMIDIfier: configuration of channel mapping is even simpler than ChopperLan, but does not transmit SysEx. Using ChopperLan will allow you to use the V-Combo Editor (at least in the direction EDITOR -> VR09). I'm working on a video that explains a "GM" setup for the VR09+V-Combo Editor. That will give you an idea how those software mappers work.
  23. sorry, I made several copy paste and far-too-late-in-the-night errors, the Editor is NOT for iOS (=iPad) but for Win 7-10 and Mac OS-X (and Linux) Unfortunatly the VR does not offer a way to access the onboard registrations from outside. IMHO the only way to switch the registrations is using a hardware foot pedal. That's the reason why the Editor actually uses the 'upg-files' workaround to at least have one method to 'edit' them. One of the planed Editor features is to 'rebuild' the registration thing completely on the Editor (with principally an unlimited number of registrations and a 'nice' intuitive surface that could even include songlists etc) , so you won't use the registrations of the VR any more but those of the Editor. If we succeed to completely decode the upg-file format, it would even be possible to save the Editor-registrations to a upg-file and load into the VR and vice versa. Decoding the upg-format is no miracle but extremely time consuming and rather a future thing. f
  24. V-Combo Editor Update v1.12.4: + : upg-Registration-Editor: the VR registrations can now be edited using the the upg-files (the files where reg. sets are saved to and load from usb dongle). Registrations can be ordered, renamed, copied and merged with other sets. + VR DRUM section added + improved working area (e.g. indication of sound names in the voice selectors) + improved feedback from VR. + many Bugfixes download: http://ctrlr.org/roland-vr09-vr730-v-combo-editor video tutorial: [video:youtube]
