  1. Best - I'd have to rank AWB at Ronnie Scotts as one of my highlights. I also enjoyed Suzanne Vega at the Fleadh - just her and a bass player, very engaging.

Worst - Steely Dan at Wembley Arena. A studio band in a big iron shed, with the usual crap sound: booming bass and icepicks-in-your-eyes bright guitar.

    I agree. It's very important.

We always send our channels list + on-stage positioning (I'm sorry I don't remember how do you name it in US or UK) when we have a third party sound company.

...and when possible... give them a phone call to be sure they have read it 😬 (and understood 😉).

I say "technical rider". But you've got me thinking if I'm using that term wrong!

  3. Classic example of the songwriter/composer dichotomy is George Gershwin. When he wrote Porgy & Bess, the music press of the time was all "who does this Tin Pan Alley guy think he is?"

The first person who comes to mind who might be both is Leonard Bernstein. I wouldn't think of him as a master songwriter except that I have encountered  several of the artfully written songs in West Side Story.

Of course, Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics in WSS.

As has been mentioned by a few others here, take that "2000 watts" with a grain of sand. Whatever the true figure is, it's usually more than enough to fry the drivers, so needs some kind of limiting.

Yes, often they're using a stereo amp that delivers the same power to each channel, I guess that can be more cost effective for some reason. I think I first saw that on the QSC K8. It was 1000 watts, bi-amped using a stereo amp that sent 500 watts to the LF driver and 500 watts to the HF driver... but in practice, the LF driver might have seen 500 watts, but the HF driver probably never saw over 50.

Yep,- and the woofer might be 4 or 8 ohms while the HF driver is 16 ohms.

It´s also possible these 1000 (or 2000) Watts PEAK power are into a 2 (or 4) ohms load,- so it´s the half into 8 and a quarter into 16 Ohms.

    Now the "math" ...

1000W peak is about 500W continuous/program and about 250W RMS.

Now google and recognize how many measutring methods for RMS power rating are available out there.

    There are several ...

    A.C.

Which is why SPL is the more relevant statistic, rather than power output. Look for db (1W/1m).

From what I've read, heard, and experienced first hand, a bank of small speakers can reproduce full-range sounds.

Bose 802, famously. Sounded nice if you use the accompanying controller.

Phil Jones is doing the "lots of little speakers" thing, as mentioned earlier in this thread. I wonder how this kind of combo would sound with keys? https://www.pjbworld.com/cms/index.php/product_suitcase_compact_bg-400/

How often are those of us with tweeter-equipped speakers blowing them out...?

Never since active speakers included protection circuitry.

I did blow the *woofers" in a pair of passive mid/top speakers, passively crossed-over from a passive sub fed from a separate power amp. But that was a geological age ago.

Just to be clear, when using band helper you just use the spreadsheet to import your midi preset data or song data or similar type parameters. At that point you stop using the spreadsheet and it becomes saved to your user account.

The app is pretty stable, and the developer is really responsive, however it is a one-man shop for the most part, so there is always the risk that it goes under for some reason.

Pricewise, it’s very cheap something like $15-$20 for a years subscription.

I’ve been using it for two years for weddings and it’s pretty great for calling up a song on the fly which is how pretty much all of the bands I play with roll.

+1 on BandHelper (or the non-subscription Set List Maker). Arlo Leach provides good support and I'm happy to pay him for that.

No more drummers, I want to find a percussionist that keeps their volume down.

The greatest drummer I worked with was like that. Every stroke was like a caress, or a line of paint with a brush. But also tremendous groove and sense of time.

He went for lessons recently and was told to hit'em harder!

  9. Compelling thread.

As a Brit, I will comment that not everyone in my country is fascinated by the Royal family. Threadslayer's comment about Americans being fascinated is enlightening - I suspect simply because of the "otherness" of it ("You mean your head of state ISN'T elected?"). And of course an American married into the family, adding to the interest.

I will say the late Queen was a wonderful diplomat and poster girl for the UK brand - and of course that doesn't necessarily follow for the rest of the family (anyone? York?). However, I don't particularly feel a tragic loss at the peaceful passing of a 96-year old woman.

Cool. I've had Rockit on my rearrangement/covers list for some time. This one's pretty faithful though. I have more radical plans afoot. 🙂

Stoner Rock? Charleston? Baroque Concerto Grosso? Carnatic Raga? Enquiring minds want to know...

I'm going out 4-5x a week, 7.5 miles twice, 5 miles otherwise, also mixing in some biking.  So far, since stopping my antidepressant meds in august of 2021, and getting active 9 months ago, I've gone from 265 lbs to around 195, just 20 lbs away from my goal.

Impressive. I'll try and cheer you on as much as possible via the medium of a forum post. They say exercise is one of the best medications you can take.

Just need MIDI Sysex out. No MIDI will be going in to the device as such.

I did look at the 3, however I am not a fan of the din to mini-jack device, it's just never struck me as overly robust.

Would you need the mini-jacks? As I understand it, the sustain pedal goes in the 1/4in jack, and the MIDI comes out of the (solitary) 5-pin DIN socket. Add power as required, ignore the mini-jacks, life's good.

I asked her which instruments were causing the vocals to be drowned out, she said ‘the guitar’.

    Common. Not universal, but common.

I gig with a one-guitar band, the guitar is loud, but luckily on the other side of the stage. Last night, he was unavailable, so we had two guitar subs - inevitably one on my side of the stage. Too loud for me without earplugs...
