it's controller functionality looks pretty limited

What controller functions do you need? My "go-to" answer for this kind of question is Casio PX5S - you can mitigate the lack of expression input by using a USB expression pedal, or adapter box. (No aftertouch though - that might be lacking on many of the lightweight hammer-action boards).

Next up...Don't Stop Believing, also a song in the new band. I've got that one down pretty well and still can't believe I bought the album on vinyl new when it first came out and I'm just now getting around to playing it in a band!

It's one of those songs, like Don't Stop Me Now or Africa, that has a second life with today's youngsters. I didn't gig it for 30 years, and now it's everywhere.

With transformers it's about how hard you hit them and the frequencies, and yes, bass can saturate and create distortion... but wait, we like that right? It's that "phat", "analog" sound, why, it will "warm up" your cold sterile digital gear! 🙂  IMO many people overthink this stuff... your DI is not going to make any major difference in how your gig goes. Of course the Radials are great – but one reason they have that rep is because they're built like tanks – that's why you see them used by sound companies that do 100+ gigs a year and throw them around like candy pieces. The average Joe Schmoe bringing their own personal gear to a few gigs a month may not need that degree of ruggedness.

Agree with both the points here.

I think the Samson you're looking at will be fine for this use case. They are not not like a no-name brand with too many vowels selling suspiciously cheap on Amazon.

I'm a big fan of 73-key instruments, however I don't know if the market demand would be sufficient to justify the additional retooling cost for a 73-key MP.

While not really a stage piano per se, it's perhaps worth noting that Yamaha hasn't (yet) announced a 73-key version of the P225 to replace the P-121.

Very true. Yamaha tried 73 with the last-gen, and didn't maintain it, which suggests it sold in insufficiently high numbers to justify.

Interestingly, at the more "pro"/"live" end of the market, 7x is more popular than 10 years ago. Roland's Fantom/FA/-0/DS/VR all have 7x variants (many launching later than the 61/88, perhaps as a realisation that the demand was there), similarly Yamaha Montage/MOXF/YC/CP (although not the ageing MX). Kurzweil has been flying the 7x flag for a while, as has Korg. And there's red, of course.

That leaves Kawai and Casio (and the boutiques). I'd love to see an update to the PX5, and perhaps a ES519 or similar, with 73 keys and proper 5-pin MIDI for on-stage use in a multi-keys rig.

I only spent around $350 for my second gen iPad Pro 12.9" 256 GB as a refurb.

Yes, a previous generation 12.9” at $350 is an excellent option.

Agreed. My kids have s/h iPhones (good value vs Android, because of the support life), and I have a s/h iPad mini (the previous gen, with a headphone jack). I'm just about to order my daughter a refurb iPhone SE (2020) to replace her iPhone 7. All still get updates.

To me Nord needs to do a whole revamp of their sounds library with focus on sounds for live use,  so sound more open AP sound, most sound like very close mic'd.

Indeed. And a consistent volume/projection across the entire spectrum would make all the difference. I sometimes wonder whether they use a spaced (or wide-angled) mic pair that gets plenty of bass and treble, and not much in the upper-mid.

I’m curious to see what’s available in USB-C/TB monitors in 2732x2048 @ 264 (which is the iPad Pro 12.9”).  They do have forScore for macOS.

The iPad is 4x3 (do I have to call that "16x12" these days?) aspect ratio, and I don't think you'll find any portable monitors with that aspect ratio.

If you're simply looking for a similar resolution, I found this one at 2880x1620, so similar resolution on the long axis: https://magedok.com/collections/3k-portable-monitors/products/15-6-inch-ips-3k-touch-portable-monitor-mg156-qt02

If you want a comparable short-axis resolution, 4k monitors are 3840x2160 so about 40% "longer" than your iPad, pixel-for-pixel

Not sure about the wiring inside the DIN plug.

But the FC35 does support half-pedaling.

Thanks. Half-pedalling implies more than "three on/off switches", and leads us into specific manufacturer/proprietary solutions. I'll have to stop dreaming about this thing.

Preach, brother! This stuff has transformed my (admittedly mundane) setup/tear-down process.

I thought it was called "wire loom."

That's kind of thicker. Stokely's (and my) loom of choice has a woven feel to it.

roll it out and connect.  at the end of the night i disconnect and rollup.  cuts setup/ breakdown time.  also provides a neater appearance.

This. Put colo(u)red tape/stickers on each plug at either end, and matching ones on the equipment sockets (keys, mixer, pedals, whatever) for super-easy and super-reliable setup.

Anything with samples is a non-starter. I don't want to hear you steal from your betters, I want to hear what you can do. If you can't do, then sit down and shut up. Case in point, a concert I was dragged to by my stepdaughters where the lead-in band had a tune that sampled the main riff from Sugarloaf's Green-Eyed Lady. It was a blatant ripoff. Pissed me off. Incidentally, the headliners were NSYNC, as I recall. Although their music isn't to my taste, at least they didn't steal anything beyond dropping out of the rafters on ropes to the strains of the Mission Impossible theme. I'll go that far.

I'm also okay with Yes opening to Stravinsky's Firebird. They didn't incorporate it into their music, pretending that it was their own.

How do you feel about the opening of Queen's "It's A Hard Life" (using the overture to Pagliacci)? Or Billy Joel appropriating Beethoven on "This Night"?

    Cheers, Mike

  11. My take: the verse of HOIC is a basic I-IV (Ab-Db) progression. The Ab minor blues scale includes a Gb, which is the 7th of Ab, but the fourth of Db, and the fourth is typically a note to avoid in these knds of solos. (I am aware that the word "typically" is doing a lot of work in that sentence).

By changing the Gb to an F, you swap out the problematic fourth for the major third - which is a critical note in defining the Db tonality.

Using your ear in this way is a big part of playing interesting solos. (Pat Metheny's "show me the chord" is exactly what this is about). I've posted here about how boring I find solos that only use the "blues scale of I", throughout the solo.

    Cheers, Mike.
