  1. Not with the board now, being at work, but is there a Velocity setting?
  2. Interesting, I have an A-100 also and mostly have had no problem adjusting to the VR-09's keybed. Everyone's different and you have to play what you are comfortable with. There was a time when I absolutely could not play piano on an unweighted kb but eventually I finally got comfortable doing so. One thing I find odd about the VR-09's keybed is that it seems too easy to press down a note accidentally when your just lightly resting your fingers on the keys in preparation to play a chord. Maybe it's just me but this has never happened to me on any other keyboard on it's default setting. I guess I should look into adjusting it's touch sensitivity.
  3. Yusof The wife had Fallon on the DVR tonight. Not sure what to think of this cover but the Cat's voice still sounds good and so does the Nord!
  4. We just replaced our lead singer in my Tom Petty tribute. The demo should start playing when you enter our web page. Not only does this guy have great range and pitch but, in our opinion, sounds a lot like Tom. http://www.petty-larceny-band.com
  5. Thanks ToB3. Sounds easy..will try tonight. No wonder why I couldn't figure it out!
  6. Great tips toB3! I have not tried the EP one yet ,but playing with the high and low organ gain controls as suggested here and on the Clonewheel forum really does help. Someone suggested a dummy plug in the right channel which does almost the same thing to improve the sound. With the plug in the sound is also much more spacious. Even better yet, with the dummy plug in, adjust the high and low gain a bit less to just about 3 or to taste. Edit: just tried your tip on the stock EP's and I can't get a Rotary effect in the first place (or any effects) on most of them using either the Rotary or SFX menus. Am I approaching this incorrectly?
  7. I have no idea what those files are that you're talking about Wes, so I'll leave the library up to your expertise Thanks for the IPod/knob finger sweep hint. That works great. Now I can stop cursing my IPad!
  8. The one factory sound I selected to edit was overwritten in the Registration becoming the Sitar. that's the only way you can save it to the VR-09. I'm not sure if it the original tone is still available on the board anymore but I'll check later. I chose one I would never use anyway. I like the VR-09 a lot but don't like the fact you can't load individual tone files from Roland's website unless you create them yourself on the Ipad editor. At least that's the way I understand it. Edit: The factory sound I used, Sq Lead 2, is still intact in its original form and can be used for other Registrations.
  9. Well, I did create a passable Sitar sound on second try. Pretty sure the partials were on but it did not sound anything like a Sitar until I started twiddling knobs and sliders on either the IPad ap or keyboard. Unless there is some trick to it, it is really difficult to turn the" knobs" on the IPad. Apparently when you select a Wave, that sound is buried under the layers and effects that were used to create the selected synth patch that one is editing. If my hypothesis is right, eliminating or adjusting those reveals the sound of the selected Wave. I also was able to save the sound as a registration. Not sure what happened the first time, but since I did the 1.3 update,I no longer get asked if I want to "overwrite the current registration." It just does it immediately. FYI, the update takes at least 20 minutes to complete.
  10. "one of the great things about the VR-09... There are 3 sitar waves in the PCM samples.. Wave number 225/226/227.. And i would expect that you can use these waves and the iPad editor to create a sitar sound... That said, I haven't listened to the waves so I don't know how good or bad they are.. But that is where I'd start" OK, I found the Sitar waves on the editor and selected them. I've edited plenty of piano and organ patches on this and other boards but don't use Synth lead or Pad voices all that often so never really programed those sounds before. How does one "listen to the waves" and how does one get them into the VR-09? first I selected a synth patch to edit on the VR-09. Then, when I selected "Sitar wave 226",the sound did not change to a Sitar- whether I hit the read button or not. I was able to affect the sound with the myriad of knobs and sliders on the Ipad ap and got it to sound somewhat like a sitar. When I went to save the sound on a registration (which I have done successfully many times before-also just upgraded to 1.3 today)it did not Write it for some reason and my "Sitar" disappeared into thin air! This would be a lot easier if Roland just posted a Sitar patch somewhere that I could just load on a USB stick.
  11. Outkaster, What time period did Roy use the Yammy P50m on stage rather than a "real piano?" Is that the period you consider his piano "less sterile?" Yeah, Charlie does play a few things different than Danny did but he's no slouch. I love the way he did the organ smears on the intro to Land of Hope and Dreams on Wrecking Ball. [video:youtube] Also Bruce's voice on Magic, particularly on Girls in Their Summer Clothes (love the song) sounded unusually smooth IMO. A little digital makeup applied here? [video:youtube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8PB1a1c9zA
  12. Interesting that they are still using Yamaha P50m Modules but only as backups for Roy's midi'ed C3 Grand. I only gigged with it a few times(sounded good through the band) but think I'm going to be trying mine out for band practice.
  13. The final speed is determined by the pulley sizes, not the drum size. Yeah, forgot about that but the large pulley on top of the 12" is probably smaller than the 15". Still we are getting somewhat OT here. VR-09 ....is that default 6-9 setting on chorale incorrect? It is much harder to hear than tremolo when comparing it to the real thing. YMMV but the organ and tremolo settings tweaks I have shared above IMO make that VR-09 organ sound really good- at least in my studio playing along with MP3''s. I Will be trying them at a gig this Thursday. I also used the organ sounds from J Giels Shoot Your Shot' live and Jk & Steppenwolf 'Hootchie Cootchie Man' live MP3's for reference.
  14. I know, I was referring to weight -with the smaller drum being lighter powered by basically the same motor.
  15. The 130 has a 12" drum. Wouldn't that spin faster than the heavier 15"? The point still is that Roland has the Chorale speeds backwards if I am correct.
  16. I tried that with an Ap called Strobe Light and got 75 RPM on the drum and could not get a still reading on the horn but it seems close to 120-35. This is consistent with this Wiki post which also indicates that the drum rotates slower than the horn on chorale as well...but not by muchSpin this I wonder why the Roland programers set it up as the opposite? If you use a factor of 5 with the Wiki RPM,s that means the VR-09 Fast speeds should be set about 80 for fast and 8 for slow. Using my ears with the real Leslie I guessed 80 and 15 which sounds pretty close to me!
  17. I have been tweaking my VR-09 organ's registrations I have made by A/B ing it with my A100 and Leslie. I got the VR-09 not exactly, but pretty darn close to the Hammond by cranking the leakage into the upper teens and keyclick in the 8-12 range on similar drawbar settings. The one thing I have found odd on the Roland's organ registration default settings however, is the slow speed. Most organ presets I have worked with so far on the VR-09 have the slow speed Tw (tweeter) at 6 and the Wf (woofer) at 9. I know the horn on real Leslie's has an adjustable pulley and there are other factors that regulate it speed, but isn't the horn on the real thing usually spinning faster than the woofer on slow as well as fast? Upon visual inspection of mine (I have no way of measuring the actual rpm's) it seems that way. BTW this Leslie is a 130 that I souped up by adding a 122 top, crossover, (I just have a 1 stage pulley on the horn for now), tube amp, and wooden rotor.
  18. Thanks Brad, Jeesh, no wonder I could not find them!
  19. Seems like you just need to hit the mode button to exit a registration. in organ it retains the drawbars but not splits as far as I can tell. When I have more time I'll figure out what, if anything else, it retains.
  20. First gig with VR-09 on Sat. Actually had two- aGrad party in the afternoon and a Club at night. Used primarily as my "organ." Went great and sounded very good , just a bit more tweaking needed. I actually entertained quite a few of the little kids there with the effects and the DBeam when our sound guy was having some technical issues at the party and we were we were delayed! Some questions: since I could not find it anywhere or in the manual, I presume this board does not have on board EQ? Also can the Twin Rotary effect be saved in a Registration as dialed in? also how do you escape from Registration mode to just go into the board's basic organ/piano/synth mode? When I hit those buttons the "Registration" still shows on the LCD but I don't think it is active.
  21. These were the "expanded" files I copied onto the USB stick. However, apparently the PDF files were interfering with the update as I must have loaded the whole folder with the Pdf's rather than just the one with the 3 files . A direct 1.0-1.2 UPDATE NOW COMPLETE! Thanks for your help, Craig!
  22. I tried updating the VR 09 this afternoon and I could get neither the 1.1 or the 1.2 update to work. I tried two different USB memory sticks that I knew worked fine before and I've formatted both of them on the roland first. One of them I used no problem before on my PX 5S. I followed the exact instructions below and all I can get is a blank screen. Even after a factory reset I still get nothing but the blank screen. Any ideas? Never power-off your VR-09 while the update is in progress! Leaving the power to the VR-09 switched off; connect the USB Memory to the "USB MEMORY port". Hold down the ROTARY SOUND [ON/OFF] and ROTARY SOUND [FAST/SLOW] button and turn on VR-09. The update process starts with displaying on the screen the repeatedly as follows. "Updating..." * The indicator of the ROTARY SOUND [ON/OFF] button will be blinking slowly on updating. When the update completes, the message "Finished." will appear on the display. Then, the indicators of the ROTARY SOUND [ON/OFF] and ROTARY SOUND [FAST/SLOW] buttons will be blinking quickly. Turn off the power of VR-09 after confirming the update completion. Detach the USB Memory and switch off the power to the unit.
  23. Update version 1.1 is no longer available on the Roland website. Anyone know if it is OK to go from 1.0 (which I have) to 1.2. I really need the Octave change on organ enabled. Anyone still have the 1.0 file on their computer they could send me if I have to do that first? I have both a Mac and PC laptop. Thanks
  24. I nearly screwed up my update when I did it...so glad I was able to reset and start over. The dark, blank screen of doom gave me palpitations. I would think you could go straight to the latest operating sys, but I am just about the farthest possible departure from an OS expert. Maybe better to play it safe and do 'em both? That is probably the best idea. With a bit of tweaking I'm liking the organ on this board which is what I'll primarily be using it for. How do you get the percussion to work on just the top octaves?
