  1. I used it for a huge outdoor venue this summer. The sound company's mixing console was quite a bit back from out in front of the stage with 30'speaker towers projecting into the park just behind them. The pro sound guys were impressed that the SS's sound projected so well that far out to them.
  2. Thanks, I made most of the stand from a kitchen table I bought on Craigslist for 20$.
  3. That actually was my intent but the top kb ended up higher due to design constraints. I think putting a piece like this on the back will solve that problem. back
  4. http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss153/bossbandbob/front%20stand.jpg http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss153/bossbandbob/stand%20back%20view.jpg http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss153/bossbandbob/stand%20top%20view.jpg My gig rig all prettied up for our Tom Petty tribute bands' recording this Thursday night on Local Rock TV. It's a Charter cable show that also has gone National now and will also provide us with some badly needed high quality video and sound clips for demos (for free). We will be in full TPATH dress and they"are providing Vox amps for appearance." Of course they won't have a B3 and Yamaha Grand there for me but this is my custom designed faux B3 stand that I'll be using. I finally snaked all my cables with zip ties into just one that shows. VR-09 is on top, with Alto mixer and PX-5S on bottom. Vent, Expression and Sustain pedals on pedal board below with power strip. Not sure I like the white wire there. I'll be going out to my SS V3 amp but there will be a Leslie 145 behind me (with a missing amp) that everyone will think that I'm using.. that our lead guitar player uses with his amps (he insists he needs it for his tone....don't ask). Thinking of attaching a faux cover panel to the top back of the stand before the show, to cover the VR-09 for the show as not sure if it makes sense to show the VR-09 label when I can't show the PX-5S except for the decal, which I could remove. I'll probably be filmed from the side and above mostly. http://www.petty-larceny-band.com/
  5. Sorry I was not more clear on that. As I play that part on the Vr-09 which does not have an actual Cello patch, I have been playing the "Cello part" on the bass side of the VR-09 (using the lowest A available) with a synth strings (2) patch, which at practice using an Alto 12' woofer powered speaker sounded fine. Maybe I need to experiment with some other patches for that on the VR for the SS or make a split on the PX-5s which has more strings choices. At least I think it is a Cello on that part of that song which had a lot of synth overdubbing on the original. It is the "Give it up, STOP" section I'm referring to. Ending this weekend, the band has played 5 straight weekends so the gig rig has not even come out of the cases during the week as I'm using other gear for home practice and we haven't needed band practice..
  6. OK so that explains why I can't hear the low Cello part I play in Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More" when using the SS. Same thing.. not worth buying or hauling a bass component for just one song. Line out to PA sounds like a good idea for that one.
  7. I ordered this from SW Thurs, selecting the free delivery option. Arrived at my house Friday morning, gigged with the SS sideways on this stand Sat. night on another crowded stage. Amp was about 5 ft. from me, in back slightly to the left. I was stage right again. Best band mix yet!The band and I all could hear me great. Organ on top octaves of VR-09 was not as ear piercing at high volumes as when the amp was straight up but was very clearly heard. EP's sounded great. AP sounded a bit harsh with just me and the SS at high volumes during set up but later meshed with the band (Tom Petty Tribute) beautifully! As a matter of fact this was the best I have ever been able to hear myself play in a band situation. It definitely makes the gig more relaxing and more enjoyable when you can hear what you are playing and know that the audience can as well!
  8. I actually had a gig Sat. night using the SS3 where the audience could hear me fine but the band could not. It was a new club that had a very wide but not very deep stage and we basically had to line up side by side. I was originally positioned stage right with the amp diagonal to me at the right. Other amps, players and a case were blocking my sound to the band. After getting rid of the case, and repositioning the SS to my left pointing at a 45% angle and upwards towards the band, problem solved!
  9. You can get a stereo feed from the . This mixer does not have a 'Control out' It has R/L out to mains, an Earphone out, and an RCA R/L Aux out.
  10. Thanks Ray, My keyboard's mixer that I just bought has a R/L stereo out which will go to the SpaceStation. If I ever want to go Stereo rather than mono to FOH can the mixer's earphone jack be used for that using a TRS Y cable?
  11. I know the sub out on the SpaceStation is full range but does it send out a summed to mono signal or can it send out stereo via a TRS cable ?
  12. Does the noise vary with the dimming level? Did you try changing your instrument cables? A bad 20' cable caused a similar hum with my SS.
  13. I have played a small club, medium sized club and a large outdoor venue with the SS and could not be happier. The outdoor venue was on a big bandstand on a huge Town Common so the Pro sound company had to use the sub out Jack to FOH for the speakers further back in the park. Their mixing station was about a hundred feet from the SS and even they were impressed with how well it' sound carried to them. Question, thus far I have not used a mixer. I have just been using the VR-09 outputs to the PX-5S inputs and the PX-5s outs to the SS. I use the Roland mostly for organ. I have had no sound or volume issues as I have been adjusting the volume on the PX with its knob and theVR-09 with its expression pedal and I'm very happy to have one less piece of gear to hook up. In my studio I did try the two boards into my power mixer and out to the SS and don't hear any sound advantage. So what am I missing by not using a mixer during shows?
  14. The adapter was plugged in at least for a 1/2 hr before this started to happen.
  15. When using batteries with this board, is there a drain on them when the unit is plugged in using the power adapter? I used it for an hour or two with just batteries, then later, while using it plugged in for maybe another hour, I started getting "low Battery" flashing on the screen which also momentarily disables the board. I had to take the batteries out to stop it from doing that. Is there a command somewhere in the menu that switches from battery to AC power?
  16. I had my first practice with my Stones Tribute band since my debut gig using the SS amp. They told me after practice that THEY wished I had brought the SS to our jam space as they could hear me so much better at the gig! We tend to get a a lot louder at our gigs as well. Although I monitor in Stereo at the jam space, my signal goes out mono to a typical FOH PA set up. My set up stays there. Sorry boys, but at 40lbs. The SS only goes to gigs. I am not dragging the SS up the stairs from my studio to my car, then from the car up 3 flights for both of my bands for every practice!
  17. Welcome to the forum Steve, The Velcro Wings is a great idea!
  18. Now that the SS is back in my studio, after experimenting with different positions, I find, so far, I like it best leaned back against the wall against one of its top corners with the front and a side speaker firing towards me. The leslie sim really sounds impressive like that. Strangely enough it seems pretty stable in that position, probably due to its weight distribution but I may have to get some kind of amp stand for it for added stability. This incidentally is the same position I had it in during my first gig with it that I had posted about above, where everyone was raving about its sound. Of course YMMV depending on the room it is in.
  19. http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss153/bossbandbob/Ideas%20-%2012.jpg Actually just tried this with 2 side firing speakers. Not sure if I actually reversed the polarity on those and if this sounds like the Space Station but this sure does sound good with a leslie sim or my Ipod playing. The stereo effect is strong anywhere in the room except when your right near the speakers. The volume is also the same anywhere in the room. It follows me into the next room and up the stairs as well but with decreasing volume with distance. EDIT: Even though the speakers are 6' in front of my keyboard, the Leslie effect seems to be coming from behind me as well. Tres Cool! As I just did actually buy a SS, the above configuration does work and will give one some idea of how the real thing sounds. Not quite as spacious due my lack of knowledge of how to create a width control, but as noted, the sweet spot seemed everywhere.
  20. Damn near put out my back carrying that 7lb monitor and piece of foam core last night! I do wish the SS was about 7lbs lighter with a built in 2 channel mixer but I did make a ghetto rolling case for it out of a rolling, extendable handled suitcase and a bungee cord. Worked like a charm!
  21. Having everyone in the band including OUR sound man love my sound with SS amp was hardly a nightmare. This was the best gig, sound-wise, with this band I ever had! I had discussed this with the sound guy beforehand, told him it was my first live use of the SS and that he may have to pull me down in FOH because of the nature of this amp. He did not mind at all the 1 second adjustment it took for him to bring my channel's slider down and loved the sound basically emanating from the amp and having 1 less thing in the PA to compete with the vocals. He brought my level down in the FOH, the SS WAS my stage mix- I did not hear a difference on my stage level at all after he did that. With less people in the room to absorb the sound during our last set, a slight tweak downward of the PX-5S volume knob was not too hard for me to deal with either...those two 2 second adjustments were hardly high maintenance.
  22. Not any more at a venue that size..All I will bring next time is the Space Station. As a first time user from reading comments on this thread, I brought all that stuff just to cover all the bases. It's always better to have more stuff than you need at a gig than to say " I wish I had this or that." (I did not bring a mixer..I had the VR-09. feeding into the PX-5S.)
  23. I ended up doing this exact configuration last night at a gig with my very loud Stones band in a small to medium sized club in order to have all bases covered. I had the SS about 5' away from me tilted against the wall at an angle so both the front and a side speaker were facing me. When I first tried it out before our sound check with my custom made VR-09 organ patches..the band leader/guitarist said to the rest of the band, "did you hear this thing? It sounds like a real Leslie!" They were as equally impressed with the piano, ep, horn and vibraphone tones from my PX-5s. I had Width and mids set at about 1PM, highs bit less. I needed no further adjustments during the gig. After the gig, our sound guy said he had to totally remove me from FOH monitors as the SS was cutting through so loudly on its own. I was even asked to turn it down a bit after the crowd thinned down after midnight. I ended up turning off the volume completely on my mini monitor as I did not need it to hear myself either. Being able to hear myself caused me to play pretty well. I had previously abandoned my sustain pedal for piano with this band as I could never hear its effect. Glad I brought it last night as I could actually hear it and it now was essential for piano parts! Each band member, including the sound guy, told me after the gig how good my patches sounded and that they had never heard them that clearly before. I did not even need the foam core baffle I brought 'just in case' either. An overall win-win situation!
  24. I'll be trying the SS at a gig tonight for the first time and being told to turn down and then not hear myself is a concern. I have a Behringer B205D mini monitor that sits on a mic stand that I can position firing at my ear, so I'll bring it along, just in case. The chain would be keyboards into SS, SS into Mini monitor,Mini monitor into FOH (if needed). The Behringer monitor has an XLR out that sends a nice signal to FOH.
