  1. Yes - what Synthoid said! The original Galactica was a blatant Star Wars ripoff but it had a certain panache to it that made it fun to watch, much like TOS and also Firefly (and don't even get me started bitching about how Fox pulled the plug on that series waaaaay to early ). In the Galctica reboot it was like they tried to suck the very last ounce out of any joy of living that might have still remained and, as Eric says, everyone felt a need to copy that feeling after that. Also,The Orville may shamelessly copy Star Trek but at least there's some hope for the future in that series and it's fun to watch as well. Amazing, this correlation between keyboard players and SciFi geekedness. It may spell hope (or doom) for humanity after all
  2. Is this another Apple-only program? I downloaded it and the folder says _MACOSX. When I click on that (in my Windows machine) it says "this folder is empty.
  3. Sorry for being slow to respond to this thread/post. Yes, that is indeed Billy Preston. His great work is all over this recording. If you can find one of the later reissues of the CD they bring the organ up a little in the mix and have some complete performances they had edited down on the original LP. There is also an LP and reissued CD of King Curtis and the Kingpins from the original performances. I think they did the first set & then Aretha did the main sets. This particular performance is different than the one on the original release. They did at least 2 nights at the Filmore, possibly 3. Much great Hammondizing to learn from Billy on both recordings. quote=Bradley B]This is Aretha, I think from the '71 Grammys. It is interesting that the overlaid video is shot across the Hammond so we get to see the action. I was told by someone that the pinky ring was a clue that it was Billy Preston on the B3, though I have nothing other that that. Whether or not, it was a masterful performance of just the things discussed here earlier. Drawbar selection, expression pedal and note choice to complement the song. 4. I've used mine for 3 jobs at this point & haven't found the treble to be a problem. Actually last night I was trying to keep the bass in control but that particular room is a difficult one acoustically. My main problem is that it's just so honkin' big. I should have gotten 408 & used a sub on the few jobs where one would be needed.
  5. Don't know if this will come through or not: https://www.facebook.com/ben.ninmann/videos/10220091420220462/?t=0 Didn't know before tonight that this was the last stop on their first U.S. tour - and they only played two other dates over the weekend. They came here from Chicago on Saturday night so it was a bit of a commute. I was a bit disappointed in the sparseness of the crowd but they were an enthusiastic lot, and so was Mr. Doley.
  6. I posted this reply on the Clonewheel Forum group on Facebook. Here is the copy of that post: Thanks for the review Mitch!! I'm still kinda on the fence between the 610 & 612. The lt. hand bass boost on the 612 is a plus but most of my jobs playing that are fairly low volume or "bassy" rooms so that I can even get by with the Spacestation. Do either the 610 or 612 come with castors as standard or is that an extra cost option for both? Thanks again.
  7. Just a word(s) of caution - there is a road close to the upper entrance that leads to a Toys R' Us store or something similar. Don't park there - they tow people in that lot. Just a little further down from the lower entrance is another road to the right which leads to a strip mall with a Wegman's grocery, Miller's Ale House & a few more establishments. I'm not sure if they tow from there or not. I usually go a little further & park in the post office parking lot and have never had any trouble there. There is of course the in-park parking too. It can take longer to get out from there though.
  8. I have a friend, originally from the U.S., who moved to Netherlands a few years ago. He and his wife like to see this group whenever they are playing in their area and hold them in very high esteem. He was saying that the band actually went to England and spent time consulting with the people involved in the Beatles' recordings (don't know if George Martin was one of them) to try to duplicate them as close as possible. I think they even consulted down to the level of exactly what instruments/amps/etc. were used on the recordings and use the same if they can. And, as Elmer pointed out, they try to use the same orchestral configurations as the original recordings
  9. We will looking forward to hearing your impressions!
  10. I'm looking for the type of full size sustain pedal that has an extra length of the base (foldout, I think) that you actually rest your foot on while using the pedal itself. The usual searches of Sweetwater & Amazon didn't produce any positive results. Is there an extra descriptor I'm missing? I tried sustain pedal with extension but that didn't work. I tire of constantly chasing the pedal all around the floor with the regular ones. Thanks.
  11. I was going to post his Lancaster appearance a few days before the actual event and will do so anyway just as a reminder.
  12. For Sherry: The MS site lists the weight difference as 6 pounds. However in their rush to get the specs out they may have made a few errors.
  13. This question for comparison may be slanted a little more towards those who attended Gear Fest and could have had a chance to hear them side by side. Probably the biggest concern would be how much bass response are you giving up? The specs say 50hz for the 612 & 60 for the 610. However, as we all know, specs don't always mean that much in real life. Of course the weight & dimensions favor the 610. On the 612 discussion thread from a few weeks ago mention was made of it having castors. Would the same be available on the 610? Sweetwater lists the 612 as only $100 more than the 610 so it's almost better to plunk down the extra, but the 610 is already bigger than I would like & the 6 pounds would make a difference in the lug factor. My mixer crapped out right before this past week's performance. Of course the financially sound option would be to replace that instead of spending big bucks on a new amp. However the 2 separate channels on the MS are all I need. Right now I use a Spacestation so with its one channel a mixer is mandatory and we're all familiar with the gripe about the SS not being good for acoustic piano. Doing a comparison on the Sweetwater site it lists the 612 as having 8 1/4" inputs and the 610 as having 4. The pictures of the control section look the same though. so it's probably just a mistake from when they were rushing to get the 612 & 408 out (this was discussed on another thread). Either way though, that looks like it would entail plugging 2 separate keyboards into the same channel, which might not work too well. Anyway, if anyone has any insights into comparing the two, or insights into the 610 in particular, your sharing of these insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  14. I skimmed the entire topic & didn't see this so hopefully I'm not restating something already brought up: I always check the "Keep me logged in" box but always have to sign in again when I pull up the site. That was my serious reply - now for my smarmy one: The analog version of the forum sounded better
  15. Don't know if this helps or obfuscates, but: My Kawai is a generation back, the MP-6. I long ago pulled the tag off the top key that states what type of action it is so it may or may not be the same as the new ones. I thought its action was better than any of the other brands at the time. Its acoustic piano sound is definitely not in love with The Space Station 3 but then none of the other brand's acoustic pianos mate well with the SS3 either. I had to sell my grand for room space reasons when I moved and ended up getting a Kawai upright. While it's a good piano I still do most of my practicing on the MP-6 because its action is more like a grand.
  16. What would be really great is if these software emulations, and the hardware clones too, had a way to adjust the position of the stopped rotor to the virtual mic. They always stop facing it squarely and then when you go to tremolo the whole eq curve goes out of whack. A way to set it where the stopped rotors stopped at a certain angle away from the mic would fix the problem.
  17. The big flaw on the FA organs is lack of chorus/vibrato. The big flaw on the VR is the effects control. One knob controls 2 parameters simultaneously. You can't set, for example, the tremelo speed and depth on a Rhodes sound independently. You have to hope for a happy medium of the 2 (spoiler alert: There ain't one). That's what drove me to sell the VR-09.
  18. There was discussion some years ago that these solos were actually played by Billy Preston. I don't know if that ever was definitively resolved or not. The passing chords on the Wurlitzer from Family Affair also sound particularly Billy-esqe.
  19. If you're referring to the internal speakers vs. an external sound system, yes, the difference is night & day.
  20. And I piss off a lot of people (and possibly you) by calling BS on this.
  21. Yes, the overblown ch/vb is my main complaint with this keyboard. Even C2 sounds beyond C3 in most clones. Overall though it's a good little board. I have yet to delve into it deeply.
  22. I don't think the campfire would work - it doesn't have battery capability. The sound from the speakers is fairly anemic, but then again we shouldn't expect too much from speakers this size.
  23. Thanks for the reply, Star Guy!! The percussion is now much more livable. Now to figure out how to dial down that overbearing chorus..... I agree with kywn on the Leslie sim, but we kind of expected it wouldn't be up to the standards of the standout clones. Thanks again.
  24. Mine came in yesterday also. My question, for those who already have the board, is this: Is there a way to dial back the chorus & percussion volume in the organ section? Those were the biggest noticeable flaws on my cursory playthrough. I sent a question to Studiologic about that & haven't heard back. In all fairness though that was only last night so they haven't had proper time to respond.
