  1. Now see what the hell you started here, Bobby?

Dude, I blame YOU. You're the one that started me on the quest to have the most streamlined sexy setup with this thread (alas the pic links now seem broken).

    LOL! :thu:

P.S. Said rack is the aforementioned rack I am now trying to eliminate. :freak:

It's the circle of (gear) life.

  2. Well I finally got to play a CP4 myself today. I had already recommended it to 2 students solely based on the comments in this thread. I went over to one of my student's houses to try his new instrument. I took my EV ZLX12P to hear how it would sound through the rig I'd be playing it through. I also brought my headphones.

Based on everything I've ready in this thread (18 pages for me) I had high expectations. I am really happy to say that this instrument exceeded them in every way.

Action: Very solid and extremely playable. Based on what some people were saying in this thread I was worried that it might be too 'heavy' of an action. I don't know what they meant, but the action was extremely pianistic and I was very pleased with it. I'll have no problem playing quickly and easily on this beast live.

Piano Sound: I am so thrilled with the brightness of the new sample. This will likely be my go to for live stuff. Bright enough to cut, but substantive enough to stand on its own. Sounded awesome and FFF and PPP.

Other Sounds: Rhodes were very inspiring for me. I am not a Rhodes aficionado, but I think I have everything I need. I was really pleased with the dynamic response as well from a whisper to a banging FFF. I was also very happy with 2 other inclusions. I am thrilled with the amount of synth sounds included. They aren't really editable, but they will be very useful I think when I couple this board with my XS6 for Top 40 playing. The second thing that blew me away was the HARPSICHORD. I stumbled upon and was floored with how great it sounded and the awesome release samples. I couldn't help but play all the Bach I had memorized. I wish I had brought some more to play because it was a real joy.

I was impressed with the evenness of the sound and response throughout all registers. Jazz lines sounded great through the whole range of the instrument.

Lastly, I was really impressed by the simplicity of the layout. It was so easy to do everything I wanted to do. Setting up a split was a cinch, and even routing reverb to different parts of the split was so natural. They really make the most of that little display.

In short, I will be buying one ASAP. I think Yamaha has a huge winner here, and I would expect this to become a benchmark for years to come. Great job Yamaha.

  3. The best things about the CP300 were that with the speakers cranked you could get a real vibey feel through your fingers, not unlike feedback from an acoustic, and that you could set your hammond clone on top of it and still have room for a couple vintage effect pedals and a mini wet bar. But that sucker was heavy an awkward to carry, like a slab of concrete.

    All true.

  4. Two very different settings in two different days. Been a fun couple of days though.

    1) Organ at the ballgame. Finally got this version of 'Tico Tico' worked out. Gratuitous shots of VENTILATOR included.

    2) Drums and keys duo jam from last night. Using my new Moog Sub Phatty for L.H. bass.

  5. OK, I'll bite... Here's a recent tune from my home studio. All playing and programming done by me, other than the long guitar solo from 4:15-5:05.

Solid fusion and some cool lines for sure. That guitar player does indeed shred like a mofo! I'll always have a softspot in my heart for that tone and style of playing even if some consider it to be too much.

  6. Thank you guys. It's only a matter of time until I play that first note or interval that makes me wince a little bit and say 'damn, it's going out of tune again.' Hopefully that's months away.

I love that tune ! Fwiw, sometimes I harmonize that D Maj7 with a F# triad over D. Just try to sneak it in subtlety so it doesn't sound too over done.

I love Maj7+5 chords. That D major already sticks out because its major. I was making it a #11 sometimes in my version. I have to give that Maj7+5 a try.

  7. I kind of understand Roland's thinking of an entry level organ engine ++ for those with a tighter budget. But I don't understand this target as younger musicians don't exactly play organ-style music and those who do this are usually in a middle-income level where they could afford a Nord and seldom care about loopers and synth patches.

    Interesting point.

  8. 2) My copy of WTC is marked for dynamics. This was done by Carl Czerny. The Harsichord doesn't do dynamics like a piano. Is what Czerny did considered proper piano treatment?

Not really. Edit: well I am no academically qualified to truly question Czerny, but you could maybe play these dynamics very subtly and it would sound fine.

On the Preludes I tend to want to do dramatic shifts in dynamics. I guess I am a Romantic at Heart.

You can do whatever makes you happy. Seriously. But know that it wasn't the composer's intent, nor at all the style of the time.

Dynamics in Baroque literature definitely have a place. Subtle shading and highlighting of certain melodies and phrases can give the music further dimension. But bluntly wielding FFs and PPs to maudlin excess can ruin the integrity of the music.
