  1. Thanks Bobby, your's was cool, the same slower groove can work for Round Midnight. Mine was Giant Steps performed by sarcastic Martians. Bit crushing by "bothead" (who I've now renamed "Milton", for no reason.)
  2. Funny Bobby, and it works. Same thing when I was goofing around with BIAB one day, and this nonsense happened: http://www.divshare.com/download/14209587-ffd
  3. That does sound like a "rare breed" - and a beautiful place. It's always great when thats happens, and I'm glad that some of them were US folks too.
  4. I find this to be a tad pessimistic... if you state the melody clearly, I think that most people who know the song will recognize it. Of course, if you help your fortune by introducing it beforehand, that's even better... Maybe a bit soberly realistic, but not pessimistic, because I'll still love playing regardless of song recognition. And people still respond to something in live music however they connect. The odds at my next gig of 25-30 people singing along with good intonation might be a tad optimistic in my location  - but Rome certainly sounds wonderful! And I agree, your reharm of Foolish Heart could make some interesting trio or quartet music.
  5. I always liked that song, and that's a very inventive treatment of it, Carlo. You gave it a new mood, and I'm glad you shared that. I can hear it being developed and soloed on further in a group context. Like a lot of songs I like, it's a shame most people won't recognize it, much less appreciate the creative thinking that went into a reharm. So the value of the reharm is in presenting the tune as new music. Two mildly amusing (off the wall) anecdotes from my gigs this week (of no consequence to anyone, including me) : At a recorded live gig at a studio, I had a stack of two CD's I'm on sitting on the piano. At the end, an odd fellow with a beret came up and said "Oh, you have CD's! Do you have "Sketches Of Spain??!?" (Maybe he thought I was a CD salesman.) I said "no, I only have my CD's." He said "Aw MAN!! You've GOT to get "Sketches Of Spain!!!" A local music critic standing nearby jumped in saying, "he doesn't have Sketches Of Spain, but you should buy his CD's - one of them made the top CD's of the year list in the paper." So the guy says, "Well, do you play Sketches Of Spain on it?" I said, "no, but I played all those same notes." So he said, "Ok, I'll buy it." And I was at Twins Jazz Club in D.C. Friday night. It was supposed to be a collaborative quartet but Twins listed it on its site with my name at the top - like it was my thing. So I told the guys we shouldn't do tunes, just create stuff and play on it (free jazz, like in that other thread.} I set up the first "piece" and somehow the band ended up going into a standard so the whole game plan was shot... but suddenly doing standards unexpectedly seemed like a totally free, radical experience.

  7. No, I'm not a bass player, but my left hand is available for some part time bass work.
  8. Thank you Linwood and Carlo. Carlo, the bass solo was all spontaneous, and the horn parts were all planned. I did shorten the bass solo because it was too long (took out a middle section right before the high descending lines near the end.) I lengthened some midi notes for the bass to ring better, but that's about it. Of course, I was playing left hand bass under some of the bass solo, so there are more notes than a bass player would play. vicsant, no problem... I used a tenor and alto from the Roland FP4, and a small bit of trombone and studio horns from Logic, which I recorded it with. The trumpet (main melody) was not a trumpet patch - I found an analog synth in Logic that sounded more real to me than the trumpet patches, and I also tweaked it a little closer. The bass was "upright 2" in Trilian.
  9. Thanks Kevin - and uh, be careful what you wish for. Yeah, the second half was a definite personality change - the first half was just me playing stuff; the second part was a recreation of other people's stuff. I don't know if it's sequencing exactly - I just winged the bass solo straight through, went back and added a touch of drums and organ to make it "seem" coherent. The bass has all those built-in inflections from aftertouch/key assignment, so it came out the way it came out. I did go back and fix a couple notes, but it was mostly the way you hear it. For the horn stuff, I did put the harmony lines in separately. No click track at all, so a bit precarious - I had to take some liberty with the time to let the "horn" sounds bloom, and I just couldn't have played that bass very freely with a click track.
  10. Hey, thank you guys a lot. It's good to know when something works on some level, since most things I throw in this thread are some sort of bizarre experiment. The bass could be better. I don't have all the parameters of the program down yet, so the quirkiness factor is a little high. But it's kind of fun playing acoustic piano gigs, then I come home and don't use piano in the recordings at all.
  11. Just total shredding on the blues with an upright. The horn stuff on the second half is my reconstruction of a harmonized Charlie Parker solo - from an arrangement I played with the Woody Herman band. http://www.divshare.com/download/13685326-4a0 This is very 'period' stuff here (Not sure what "new blues" would be though.) ____________________________________________________________________________
  12. Happy New Year to you, LB, everyone here! Yeah Roger. Enjoyed that "McAuld Lang Tyner." The Db major 7 perfectly in character.
  13. Now less harsh, more calories: it turned into "have yourself a Trilian fretless Christmas", with a little holiday shredding at the end. http://www.divshare.com/download/13560961-a98 (disclaimer: Views expressed in this tonal commentary are for amusement purposes only, and do not necessarily reflect the musical tastes of the performer.)
  14. Thanks Dave and Carlo. Carlo, the sounds were harsh to me too, but I just didn't have the time/interest to make it sound a whole lot better. I find it hard to get a balance with Trilian bass/EW strings. And yeah, me doing a holiday song tends to bring out a slight touch of madness. I didn't arrange it, just improvised the strings afterwards and said "that will have to do."
  15. Nice arrangement and playing, Mark. Are those drums in Logic? Like Dave, I enjoyed your solo at the end. Here's my quick take of another Christmas song (just bass and strings), and then Marsalis's faithful rendition of Ellington/Strayhorn's version of the Nutcracker. http://www.divshare.com/download/13560961-a98 [video:youtube]
  16. R.I.P. James Moody. I just heard about it.
  17. Good to hear you, Bobby. Thanks for posting that. You have a very nice feel on that song, and the piano sounds really good too. Most of the obvious chords for it have been covered in your playing and Dave's suggestions. There's nothing more I could suggest, until a new version comes out (like "Dream Theater Does Strayhorn.")
  18. It's interesting how she's really made the song her own. I'm not blown away by the singing, but the unique harmonies in spots and the feel of it has a strength. Thanks for posting that, Carlo.
  19. Yep, it's out now, and shamefully/shamelessly plugged in the Shameless Plugs section: /ubbthreads.php/topics/2238659/Re_My_Semi_Retro_Jazz_CD#Post2238659 Beeboss, the same trio in the video of "You don't know what love is" plays "It's You Or No One" on the CD. When I recorded these things, I think my main hope was to provide a different perspective, than the usual pianistic showcase or traditional 'I play jazz too' recording. So for better or worse, I'm playing on the edge a lot and in the cracks, avoiding the normal comfort zone. (man, I just had to get that one last disclaimer in, didn't I?)
  20. BeeBoss - Kudos on your version of Very Early. The phrasing on the head (a touch of Jarrett there) and the semi-stride groove had a witty, quasi-Monk feel. It never takes itself too seriously. Great playing. Carlo, that's a rich harmonic version of that tune. As always, excellent playing.
  21. Thank you Beeboss and Roger. Beeboss, I always enjoy your playing. About the "rumor", I'll be able to shed some light on that in just a few days.
  22. Beeboss, very nice playing on "You Don't Know..." and thanks for posting it. I always like that song. Not sure if I posted this before, and not much of a reharm here either. A trio from a few years ago taking the song into some loose places. I remember playing a really 'out' solo on it, but the camcorder battery died just as I started into it... http://www.divshare.com/download/3840635-e7b
  23. dm426jazz, welcome to the forum. Glad you like the thread and feel free to contribute something. Some of us sometimes include charts and voicings, but your suggestion would require a classroom level effort... while the thread is mostly just for fast, free sharing of ideas. (Although I can imagine a sign: "Will Reharm For Food." ) For no reason other than I found it kind of interesting, here's an Orrin Keepnews interview about the Bill Evans/Scott LaFaro days: [video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ln0wVO7qFeU&feature=channel
