  1. A new digital piano looms larger in my near future than a software library, with the Kawai being a top candidate.  Because Keyscape plus my beat up Casio still has the not great feeling experience of the beat up Casio keybed..  That said, the playing on these vids are pretty nice.

Checking out Chummy's Kawai review now.

Hey I'm curious about the SX900 vs. the SX600 arranger boards.  The 900 is over $2K but the 600's can be found on Ebay for around $600.   How do the drum accompaniments compare between these two I wonder?

When I was shopping and deciding on an arranger board to buy, this video was helpful to me.

I did not look into the 900's drum sounds as I was confident the 600's drum sounds would be more than adequate for my needs... and so far I've been satisfied with the 600's drum sounds.  That said, once the MIDI data for a song I create on the arranger is imported to the DAW, I feel no obligation to keep the all audio from the arranger.  Once it's all inside a DAW, I can go to any MIDI track in the DAW, and replace drum parts, guitar parts, etc. with a sample library, plugin, a live muso playing the part, or whatever else I want.

  3. Uploaded just yesterday was a Q&A clip focusing on the new book What A Fool Believes authored by McDonald and Paul Reiser.

Among the reveals:  McDonald and fellow Doobies have entered the mixing phase of their next album, featuring music written by all four official members (McDonald, Johnston, Simmons, McFee), some tracks featuring McDonald and Johnston singing together, etc.

Toward the end, he says he feels validated for his crappy (in his opinion) synth tones as used on "I Keep Forgetting" and other songs, thanks to those tones being sampled for rap tracks. 😎

  4. Chargers signed free agent OLB Bud Dupree, adding needed pass rusher depth with one starter (Bosa) being injury prone.  Dupree was thought to be leaning towards returning to the Steelers but was apparently sold on triple OLB sets that will be part of the Chargers' new defensive system.  I'm sure he was also sold on the opportunity to play for Jim Harbaugh.

  5. I'm still happy with my Yamaha PSR-SX600 arranger keyboard.

One way I use it is like iReal Pro/Band In A Box.  I pick a music style like slow blues, medium swing, etc. then record maybe 4-6 repeats of a chord progression, with a fill to indicate a return to the top of the chord progression.   All I have to do is play the chords with my left hand, and the arranger creates the bass line, drum parts, rhythm guitar/piano part, etc.  iReal Pro has a faster workflow with 1000s of song charts available for download, but I like practicing switching chord shapes with my hand in real time, as well as putting in the mental work to make sure the song sections are properly structured.

A songwriter like Paich could sketch out a song on an arranger keyboard in minutes.  If he wants to change how many measures should be in the verse and/or the chorus, he just makes another recording, and decides on the fly when to change from verse to chorus, chorus to verse, etc. by hitting the appropriate buttons (typically labeled something like "Variation 1", "Variation 2", etc. as well as triggering fills whenever he wants by pressing buttons.   This can be a faster workflow than editing notes in your DAW.  Once the songwriter is satisfied with the song, MIDI can be exported to a DAW for further work.  Some arrangers will let you export both MIDI and audio if you really like the audio too.

  6. Yes, it is possible for someone with the skills and experience of a David Paich (circa late 1990s) to make productive use of a Yamaha PSR-730, whether using its built in audio, or exporting songs he wrote on it as MIDI to be played back by higher end MIDI devices like his MOTIF 8, which was mentioned as also being used on the album in a different interview.  His skills and experience are at such a high level it doesn't matter what exact voices he used on the PSR.

It's not that uncommon for cheap keyboards to be used on major album releases either.  Mike McDonald and Jeff Baxter revealed in interviews that the demo for  "It Keeps You Runnin" was recorded in Jeff's garage/apartment on a "crappy keyboard, like what you would buy for your 5 year old".  Producer Ted Templeman liked that cheap keyboard sound so much that he kept that demo track and built the rest of the song around it.  Nobody seems to remember the exact brand of the cheap keyboard, though Mike thought it might be a DMI Sound City or competing low-end brand.

It Cracks me up that the Doobie Brothers were on What's Happening!

As Rerun said when he met one of the members of the band: "Which Doobie you be?"

    The 70's were weird.

Yeah that 2 episode arc surprised me.  First episode, when the kids first meet the Doobies, the band is "rehearsing" to their own tracks, lifted straight off of the Livin On The Fault Line album.

2nd episode, the Doobies get to play live, complete with mallets lit on fire, smoke, wild guitar soloing and effects, etc.  Tiran, Mike and Pat looked relatively sober, but other band members looked like they'd smoked some doobies before filming.  At any rate, I didn't expect them to put on such an intense performance on a sitcom - they rocked the hell out of that room

Argh, well at least you are (like me) able to reset.   I felt a bit relieved actually even though I missed out on a great deal.

I'd say that when you sell things online as new, then it comes out that you don't have the stock--which is the same thing that happened to me--it says a lot about how organized you are as a business.  As in, not very.  Contrast with Sweetwater and how they sold me my guitar--I got to pick the actual guitar, see the weight and so on.   If I lived near SW I'd be in serious trouble financially....

Sweetwater and - believe it or not, Musicians Friend - spoiled me into expecting that when I put in an order, a shipping notice will come by the next business day.

Sweetwater in particular has yet to sell me an item that was not truly in stock - another sin committed by other online shops.

  9. Checking out obscure (to me) Doobie tracks

Apparently a tribute to BB King

Breakup song not written by Mike McDonald 😀

Pat Simmons' prog rock ballad, complete with symphonic accompaniment.  When they played this tune on the Whats Happening TV show, John Hartman slammed a gong with big, flaming mallets and Jeff Baxter played a blistering guitar solo concluding with wild effects manipulation

    Two uses for this unit.

    1. Sequence with a Oxi One and record stems.

    2. Connect to a Hydrasynth Deluxe to make use of the poly aftertouch.

Oscillator Sink's tricks are are based on figuring out why the Opsix has factory drum kit presets.  You would think a monotimbral synth would not be capable of having a kick on some keys, a snare on the next key over, etc.   In short, his tricks are based on operator level key tracking.  So his video provides examples of setting up a bitimbral key split, then a tri-timbral key split.

    So #2 should be doable.

#1 should also be doable assuming the Oxi is set up with send the correct MIDI note number values to trigger the desired timbres.

Big caveat is what if you want to take 3 factory presets that you like and combine them into a single tri-timbral (3-zone key split) preset?   Seem like to do it this guy's way you'll have to reprogram each of the 3 presets into your new tri-timbral preset.   This is where a true multimbral synth (or 3 Opsix units 🤣) might be preferred.

Perhaps this is part of Korg's evil plan to make you buy a Wavestate.  Wavestates are true multimbral and will let you load layers of samples of... say... an Opsix.  I believe 12 velocity layers is possible with the Wavestate's own set of tricks.

I ordered a digital piano from them just this past Saturday.  Tried calling them yesterday to get a status on the order because I hadn't received a shipping notice, and the rep said he'd look into it.

Called again today because I didn't hear anything.  The rep who answered the phone said his internet connection is down so he can't look up the order, then apologized.

I'll give them a few more days.  If no progress is made after those few days, I'll cancel the order.  If I can't do that I'll call my credit card provider to dispute the purchase - but hope it won't come to that.

    I called 2 more times.

On the 2nd and final call, I was told that they actually only had 2 FP-90Xs in the warehouse - one was an open box, and the other was a return that they intend to sell as new.  I said no thanks and asked to cancel the order.

Shame as 20% off brought the price down into the $1600 range but you win some, lose some.

  12. Chargers signed ex-Panther/Lion DJ Chark to a 1-year deal.  At the very least, he'll bring a much needed veteran presence to the WR room.  The closest thing they had to a veteran WR was Joshua Palmer who is still relatively young.

  13. wow, our situations really do parallel.  I really like the Roland FP-90X that I tried at the local shop, and was going back and forth between that and the Kawai ES-920.  The FP-90X in the shop was the white one - I found black labels on white housing easier to read than white labels on black housing.  Of course that was just the cherry on top of an action that I liked almost as much as the ES-920's and onboard sounds that I liked enough.

That was a few months ago.  As of May 2024, the white FP-90X is sold out at this shop, and also sold out at multiple online shops.  Sam Ash claimed to have 5 units in stock, and accepted their own 20% off coupon.

I'm not so concerned about the FP-90X itself, or the possibility of having to return it to non-existent store.  By all reports it has a solid build quality and it certainly felt like it was built solid when I tried it.  I know what to expect as far as action and sound, so the only reason I'd try to get a refund is if it arrived crushed by an 18-wheeler or something.

  14. No return policy is the concern that comes to mind.  Can't return a product to a store that is out of business.    But this particular product is from a mainstream manufacturer (Roland)  and I'd already auditioned it in person at a local shop - which I would have supported if they had it in stock in the color I wanted, but I deliberated too long and the shop ended up selling out all units of this product.

  15. Bought this rolling stand from Liquid Audio.  It'll be handy for rolling a digital piano in front of the computer for Open Studio lessons, or just figuring out stuff from Youtube videos, then rolling it back out of the way afterwards.  When I put my Casio Privia on it, it sits a bit high, but I think an adjustable height piano bench can make up for it.  Assembling it takes some patience as the assembly video warns but once assembled it feels solidly built.

  17. I did a drone bass patch on MS-20 Mini based on the bass patch that I made following these 2 videos

I then turned modulation frequency and some other settings down so instead of a fast wobble, I got a nice slowly evolving sound.

The result - probably would have sounded more atmospheric with a reverb effect instead of just the analog delay but, whatever:
